To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoNzo E. Rnoanss, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Hopedale, county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling-End Catchers for Looms, of
which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to improvements in automatic filling replenishing looms in which means are provided for catching the trailing end of the fillin from the shuttle to an a andoned filling carrier as it is discharged from the shuttle by the transferring mechanism and the object thereof is to provide means for plivotalliy supporting the filling end catcher w ich wi 1 permit it to swing aside if an obstruction is caught between it and a moving part of the loom to avoid a smash.
Another object of the invention isto provide spring actuated means for supporting the filling end catcher which will permit it to move bodily in parallelism with the lay and which will also permit it to have a swinging movement independent of said bodily movement.
More specifically the objectof the invention is to provide means for supporting a filling end catcher from the usual transferrer stud which will enable it to rock bodil about the axis of said stud and which wi 1' also permit it to swing yieldably either forwardly or rearwardly 1f an obstruction is caught between it and the lay or some other moving part of the loom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a rigid construction for catching the trailing filling end which will be capable of a plurahty of yieldable movements which will prevent the likelihood of breakage of any of the parts by obstructions caught between the filling end catcher and a moving part of the loom.
Other objects and features of the invention will more fully a pear from the following description an the accompanying drawings and will be pointed out in the following claims.

In the o eration of automatic filling re-- plenishing ooms when transfer takes place the filling running to the filling carrier about to be discharged is usually severed adjacent the nose of the shuttle and when the abandoned filling carrier is discharged from the shuttle a trailing end is left which runs from the eye of the shuttle to the abandoned filling carrier. If this trailing end is not removed before the next pick succeeding transfer the fillin end is likely to be drawn into the cloth an form an imperfection in the weave.
Means have therefore been provided for catching this trailing end of the filling and usually comprise a device ositioned beneath the aperture in the lay t rough which the filling carrier is discharged and behind the path of the filling carrier as it is discharged from the shuttle so that as the lay recedes the trailing filling end will be drawn over the filling end catcher and drawn from the shuttle.
In some instances a delayed movement of the picker stick may encounter the filling end catcher as the lay moves forward or a filling carrier ma drop between the filling end catcher and t e lay or some other moving art of. the loom which will cause a smas The object of the present invention therefore is to provide means which will permit a bodily movement of the filling end catcher and also a sup lemental swinging movement which un er any condition will prevent a smash.
Inasmuch as the present invention is ads dressed to improvements in mechanism for supporting the filling end catcher the partic- The stand 2 has the usual transferrer stud 5 upon which the transferrer -6 is'pivotally mounted, the transferrer being provided with the usual dog 7 which upon call for filling re lenishment is elevated into the path of-t e hunter 8 upon the lav 9 and is actuated thereby to cause the transferrer to thrust a fresh filling carrier into the shuttle and knock out the abandoned filling carrier therefrom.
The lay 9 has the usual shuttle box 10 and the shuttle box and lay are provided with a vertical aperture 11 through which the filling carrier is discharged by the transferrer. A chute 12 carried by an arm or bracket 13 secured to the. end of the lay by means including a bolt 14 serves to direct the abandoned filling carrier 15 into the usual box or receptacle.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention illustrated herein I have provided means for supporting the filling end catcher from the usual transferrer stud in such a manner that the filling end catcher may rock bodily about said stud.
The filling end catcher in the construction shown herein is in the form of a flat plate 16 having a serrated upper edge 17 to engage the filling and is secured to a laterally extending portion 18 of a supporting arm 19 which has intermediate of its length a downwardly projecting stud 20 which is jourthe transferrer stud 5. By reason of thepivotal connection between the bracket 22 and the arm 24, the filling end catcher 16 may be raised or lowered into any desired position relative to the path of the shuttle.
The arm 24 may be pivoted directly upon the transferrer stud but preferably is mounted upon an extension of smaller diameter, such as a stud 25, extending into a socket in the end of the transferrer stud and secured therein by a set screw 26.
Any suitable means may 'be provided for yieldably supporting the arm 24 to permit it to swing bodily if the filling end catcher is engaged by the wall of the aperture in the lay or by an obstruction such as the picker stick when delayed in its movement or an obstruction caught between the lay and the filling end catcher. A preferred means for thus yieldably supporting the arm 24 comprises a helical spring 27 which surrounds the stud 25 and is anchored at one end 28 in said arm and at the other end in a sleeve 30 secured to the stud 25 Iby a set screw 31. The sleeve 30 preferably has a hollow barrel 32 providing an inclosing chamber for the spring 27.
The spring 27 acts to swing the arm rearwardly and upwardly but its movement may be limited by the engagement of a lug 32 projecting from the arm 24 with the rear wall of a recess 33 in a collar 34 secured upon the stud 25. The recess 33: may be of any desired size to permit suflicient amplitude of movement of the arm 24. By rotarily adjusting the collar 34 the filling end catcher may be positioned properly in respect to the path of the discharged filling carrier. Preferably it is positioned to lightly engage the rear wall of the aperture 11 vwhen the lay reaches the limit of its forward movement, at which position transfer is effected. The abandoned filling carrier will then pass in front of the filling end catcher and as the lay recedes the trailing filling end will be drawn across and caught by its serrated edge and thereby pulled from the shuttle eye.
Occasionally the picker stick is delayed in its action and comes between the lay and the filling end catcher as the lay moves forward but the smash which might result is avoided by the yieldability of the arm 24 about the stud 25.
Other conditions may however arise which might cause a smash as by the premature dropping ofa filling carrier between the rear wall of the aperture in the lay and the filling endcatcher. or by a fillingcarrier or other obstruction being caught between the dog on the transferrer or some other moving part of the loom and the filling end catcher. In order to avoid such a result, and to give greater amplitude of movement to the filling end catcher under such abnormal circumstances I have mounted the filling end catcher in such manner that it may yield either forwardly or rearwardly if an obstruction is caught between it and a moving part of the loom.
In the preferred mechanism illustrated herein the forward end 37 of-tlie arm 19' catcher will be held in parallelism with the rear wall of the aperture 11. 4
The spring 41 engages at one end the boss 40 and at the other a washer 43.which covers the slot 38 while the other spring 42 engages a similar washer 44 covering the other side of the slot and abuts at its 0 posite end against a collar 45 which is lield upon the stud 39 by a cotter in 46 or other suitable fastening means. 1? collar47 secured to the stud 39 insures the central position of the arm under the action of the springs 41 and 42.
In order to prevent dust, lint and other substances from being deposited upon the springs 41 and 42 and thus interfering with their efficiency and the freedom of movement of the arm 19 a guard plate-48 is provided which overlies and partially 'incloses the springs and the pivota support for .the arm 19. wardly extending flange 49 which isriveted or otherwise secured to the bracket 22.
By thus pivotally supporting the arm 24 so that it may be yieldably rocked about the horizontal axis of the transferrer stud and also providing means whereby the filling end catcher may yieldably swing forwardly or backwardly about .a vertical pivot suflicient flexibility of movement is given to the nlling end catcher to enable it under all conditions to yield sufficiently to avoid smashes, while the construction is of such a rigid character that the likelihood of breakage or wear is reduced to a minimum.
It will be understood that the embodiment of the invention disclosed herein is illustrativev and not. restrictive and that various modifications may be made in construction and arrangement of parts within the meanin and scope of the following claims.

In a filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having an aperture therethrough to permit the discharge of an abandoned filling carrier, a hopper and a hopper stand provided with a laterally extendin transferrer sliud,,a transferrer mounted t ereon operable by the forward movement of the lay upon call for filling replenishment, an arm pivotally mounted upon said transferrer stud to rotate about a horizontal axis, a filling end catcher pivotally mounted upon said arm to swing about a vertical axis, yieldable means normally,acting to hold said fi'ling end catcher in a position below the shuttle and ,behind the path of the discharged filling carrier and in parallelism with the rear w l of the aperture of the lay whereby the filling end catcher is permitted to yield bodily and to swing about' its vertical pivot if an obstruction is caught between it and a moving part of the loom.
7. In a filling replenishing loom comprising a lay having an aperture therethrough to permit the discharge of an abandoned filling carrier, a hopper and a hopper stand provided with a laterally extending transferrer stud and a transferrer mounted thereon operable by the forward movement of the lay upon call for filling replenishment, a depending arm pivotally and yieldably mounted upon said transferrer stud, a bracket carried by said arm, a filling end catcher for a support pivot 'upon lsaid bracket, and resilient means carried by said bracket engaging said support and tending normall to maintain said filling end catcher in para lelism with the lay but permitting the same to swing out of parallelism with the la if an obstruction is caught between the filing end and a moving part of the loom.
8. In a filling replenishing loom compris- 7 ing a lay having an aperture therethrough to filling carrier, a hopper and a hopper stand provided with alaterally extending transferrer stud, a transferrer mounted thereon operable by the forward movement of the lay upon call for fillin replenishment, a depending arm pivotaily and yieldably mounted upon said transferrer stud, a bracket carried by said arm, a filling end catcher for a support pivot upon said bracket, a filling end catcher having a support pivot between its ends upon said bracket, springs carried by said bracket engaging opposite sides of the pivot support for said filling end catcher and normally acting to maintain said filling end catcher in parallelism with the lay but capable of yieldin in either direction if an obstruction is caugE a moving part of the loom.
