it known that I, HARRY J. Pmzs'ron, it'CitlZll of the United States, and a resident 'of San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and" State of California, have invented a new ,and Improved Detachable-Rim Fastenor, of which the following is a description;
My invention relates to means for fastening a detachable rim or the like on awheel, and more particularly relates to the fastening lugs. In using the ordinary fasten ng lugs disposed about a wheel, the respective lugs are not always uniformly forced home by the bolts or screws employed for fastening the lugs to the wheel felly, the result being that the detachable rim and the tire carried thereby are not accurately centered so as to be truly concentric with the axis of the wheel, and moreover the rim" as secured by the meansusually employed for the purpose is not always positively restrained against creeping.
An important object of my invention is to provide a fastening means involving a novel lug and appurtenances thereto, the use of which will accurately center the rim and positively prevent creeping. The stated object is attalned by providing a lug which in addition to its primary fastening function is provided with a secondary fastening means to secure the detachable rim at a point distant from the lug, thereby providing in connection with each lug two points of engagement with the rim, and in a manner to positively lock the rim against movement.
A further object of the invention is to provide a secondary fastening means of such a character that it serves for facilitatmg the proper positioning of the lug.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a wheel and a detachable rim, together with my improved fastening means for the rim;
Fig. 2 is a plan or face View of the parts shown in Fig. 1, a portion of the detachable rim being broken away;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1.
In the illustrated example, A indicates a portion of a felly of a wheel, and B, the permanent rim or felly band thereon and it is to be understood that the invention is applicable to any approved wheel. In carrying out my invention a lug 10 is provided to beplaced against a side of the felly A to which it is secured by a transverse'bolt 11 or the like. Said lug as usual has a curved lip or flange 12 to lie against the adjacent side of the detachabler'im 13 to be fastened, and has an elongated transverse tongue 14: at the side generally of tapering form, adapted to wedge between the permanent rim B and the rim 13. In order to provide an interlock'the tongue 14 is formed with an end slot 15, thereby giving said tongue a forked fori'nation to accommodate and pass each side of a pin 16 extending radially inward at the inner side of the rim 13. Thus, when the tongue 1st is forced into position between the rim 13 and fixed rim B, the pin 16 entering the slot 15 effects a positive interlock between said fixed rim and the rim 13 toprevent' creeping'of the latter. In connection with the lug 10 I provide an. auxiliary means to engage the rim 13 at a point distant from the lug for which purpose a rod 17 is secured at one end to said lug by being received in a hole formed in the lug for the purpose as best seen in Fig, 3 and adjacent to the lug the said rod is bent laterally as at 18 whereby the rod for its major portion is offset laterally inward to extend along the approximate center of the felly A. The free end of the rod 17 terminates in a pin 19 extending radially outward whereby it may be passed through alined holes in the felly A, fixed rim B, and rim 13. Thus, the pin 19 affords a second fastening means for the rim 13 distant from the fastening effected by the lug 10.. In practice, the pin 19 is first passed through the felly and fixed rim B into engagement with the rim 13. The lug 10 in engagement with the end of the rod 17 therein is forced laterally inward into position so that the fastening of the lug by the bolt 11 secures the auxiliary fastening pin 19 against displacement well as securing the lug itself. The ofiset portion of the rod 17 lying at the interior of the folly A limits the movement of the pin 19 radially outward.
By the use of the lug and the rod 17 with the pin 19 a materially reduced number of lugs will suflice to secure the rim, ithaving been found in practice that three lugs with the described auxiliary fastening means will sufiice to secure the largest rim employed.
By the positive interlocking of the rim 13 and lug by reason of the slot and pin 15, 16,
together with the pin 19 the creeping f the rim is positively prevented. Also, the concentric position of the rim 13 is insured and thelateral position of the rim and the tire carried thereby are also insured since the pins 16, 19are located at the median line of the rim. ,7
It-is to be understood that in practice the lug: bolt or screw 11 has the usual flange for engaging the removable rim at the inside of the wheel or at the side opposite the member it is to be understood also that the rod 17 V has suflicient strength to serve its purpose and not be yieldable laterally to a degree to defeat the purpose of the invention.
