Description

E. L. KNAPP.
LINE HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 2. I919.
1,33 1,203. Patented Feb. 17, 1920.
"WM/mesa EDWIN LYMAN KNAIPP, OF ANACORTES, WASHINGTON.
LINE-HOLDER.
Application filed September 2, 1919. Serial No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN L. KNAPP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anacortes, in the county of Skagit and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Line-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates generally to clamps and holders for lines, ropes, cables and the like, and aims to provide a novel and improved device for holding and clamping a number of ropes or lines for independent adjustment.
Another object is the provision of such a device of novel construction whereby ropes or cables can be readily placed within the device and the clamping means simultaneously brought to a position for clamping the ropes independently.
A further object is the provision of novel means for mounting the clamping means so.
that same can be adjusted to various angles.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the scope of what is claimed Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is side elevation of the device, portions being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a front view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the clamping means with the clamping plates or sections swung apart to open position.
In carrying out the invention there is provided a receptacle and clamp for the ropes or lines, comprising a bottom plate or section 1 having a plurality of transversely spaced parallel longitudinal flanges 2 upstanding therefrom to receive the ropes or lines between them. A. top plate or section 3 is arranged to seat on the flanges 2 to retain the ropes in the grooves or channels between said flanges'and the flange 2 at one side edge of the plate 1 and the corresponding edge of the plate 3 have outstanding pin butts l throiigh which a hinge pin 5 extends, for hinging the plate 3 to said flange, so that the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 17, 1920.
to said flanges. In order to clamp the plate 3 on the flanges 2, a latch stem 6 is pivotally engaged with a hinge .pin 7 carried by outstanding lugs or hinge butt-s 8 projecting from that side flange 2 opposite to the flange to which the plate 3 is hinged, and the free edge of the plate 3 has a slot or notch 9 to receive the stem 6. A nut 10 threaded on the stem 6 can be tightened to clamp the plate 3 on the flanges 2, and When said nut is loosened, the stem 6 can be swung out of engagement with the plate 3, so that said plate can be swung open. This enables the plate or section 3 to be swung open so that the ropes can be readily placed within or removed from the recesses or channels of the plate 1..
The plate 3 carries members for the ropes within the holder. plate 3 has an opening 11 above each groove or channel of the plate 1, and a serrated cam 12 is mounted in each opening, being rotatable on an axle or rod 13 that extends through upstanding lugs 14 with which the plate 3 is provided at the opposite sides of the openings 11. These cams 12 have finger pieces 15 extending therefrom, and the cams are so arranged that when the finger pieces are moved toward one end of the plate 1, said cams will be moved toward the plate 1 to clamp the ropes against same, whereas when the finger pieces are swung toward the opposite end of the plate 1, the ropes are released so that they can be slid through the holder for adjustment. This enables each rope to be adjusted independently of the others, and when the plate 3 is swung open, all of the cams are removed with said plate from over the plate 1 so that the ropes can be placed within 0 removed from the grooves or channels without interference.
In order to support the plate 1 in an inclined position, as seen in Fig. 1, said plate has an arm 16 extending from one end, for attachment to a base. This base includes a plate 17 having jaw 18 to bear against one side or" any suitable object used as a support, and the jaw 18 has a flange 19 extending from the outer side thereof. The arm 16 overlaps and is pivoted to the flange 19 by means of a bolt 20 or other pivot. A movable jaw 21 is movable along the plate 17 toward and away from the jaw 18, and carries bolts 22 extending to a longitudinal slot 23 in the plate 17 so that said jaw 21 p plate can be swung over and away from clamping Thus, said them, to support the base,
can be adjusted and held in any position to Which it is moved. The jaws 18 and 21 can thus clamp the support or object between and the plate 1 can be adjusted'to different angles by loosen ing the bolt 20. H
The present device is particularly adapted for use in connection with adjusting lines of drop scenes, such as used for stage scenery; Several lines can thus be independently held and moved, and the group or" lines can be readily removed and substituted by another set. The device, however, canbe used tor other purposes for which it is suited. Having thus. described the invention, What is claimed as new is 1. A line holder; comprising a plate havinga plurality of line-receiving grooves,
a second plate hinged. to the first named plate tic-swing over said grooves,.meansfor clamp ng said plates together, and a plurality of; clamping members, one for each groove, carried by. the second plate for individually clamping the. lines in said grooves, and movable with the second plate away from! thefirst named plate and. grooves for inserting and removing the lines.
" 2. Ai..l.l111 holder, comprising. a bottom plate having upstanding parallel flanges, provrdmg line-receivlng grooves between them, a top plate to bear on said flanges, said plates having a hinge connection at one edge to permit the second named plate to be swung to one side away from said flanges, means for clamping the second named plate on said flanges, second named plate having an openingabove each of said grooves, and
' a clampingcam carried by the second named plate in each opening to enter the corresponding groove and havingafinger base.
3. A. line holder comprising a plate. having longitudinal. line-receiving grooves and an arm extending, from one end, plate to bear against the first named plate over said grooves, means for clamping the plates together, individual clamping members carried by-the second named plate to clampthe lines individually: in saidgrooves,
and movable \viththe second named plate away from said grooves, and a base having jaws to engage a support, said arm being pivotally, connected .Wltll said base so that the first named plate can be tiltedto difierent angles longitudinally thereof.v
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses. 7
