To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN P. SPANG- LER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Union township, in the county of Hendricks and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Window-Sash Fastener, of which the following is a speclfication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to means for fastening window sashes in closed position or for ecuring a sash so that it may be moved to a limited extent from closed position for ventilating purposes, While being adjustable to permit a window to be fully opened.
An object of the invention is to prov de an improved window sash fastener which shall be so constructed as to be simple but efficient and yet not be costly, while being adapted to perform a variety of useful func tions. Another object is to provide a sash fastener which shall be adapted to be applied either to windows having balanced sashes, or to those in which the sashes are not balanced but have a stationary upper sash.
A further object is to provide a window sash fastener which shall be so constructed as to permit of its application to a window without requiring alteration of therwindow structure, and which shall be strong and durable in use.
With the above-mentioned and other objects in view, the invention consists in an improved window sash fastener havlng novel features of construction and application, and in the parts and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter particularly described and further defined in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawmgs,F1g ure 1 is a perspective View of a window provided w th the improved sash fastener, the sashes being locked together and permitting limlted movement so that a limited opening in the window is assured; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary elevation of associated parts of the window and fastener on an enlarged scale; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal section taken on a plane slightly above the lower one of the two sashes which are locked together; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary elevation of the upper one of the two sashes having one part of the fastener thereon; Fig. 5 is an elevation of the improved fastener; Fig. 6 is a horizontal sectional plan of the apparatus minus the top of the casing of the lock bolt comprised in the invention; and, Fig. 7 is a view similar to the preceding figure but with the lock bolt adjusted to a relatively different position.
Similar reference characters in the different figures of the drawings indicate corresponding elements or features of construction herein referred to in detail.
The window to which the improved sash fastener is applicable may be variously constructed with two sashes, the sashes as illustrated being movable vertically; and it should be understood that when the sashes are not balanced the upper sash may be secured in closed position as customarily, and thus the window frame comprises a sill 1, side members 2 and 3 and a top member 4:; the lower sash has a bottom portion 5, a top portion 6 and side portions 7 and, the upper sash has a bottom portion 8, a top portion 9 and side portions 10. The upper sash is so constructed customarily that the bottom portion 8 is thicker than the remaining portions of the sash and extends forward so that a projecting ledge 11 is formed at the lower end of the side portions 10.
The improved fastener includes a lock having anovel casing which essentially comprises a base plate 12 and upright wall .13 and a top plate 14:, all connected together, the casing being usually placed upon the top of the lower sash so as to be upon one of the side portions 7 thereof and suitably secured to the sash, the casing preferably having an extended base portion 15 receiving screws 16 driven into the sash, the screws being adjacent to the inner face of the sash; and preferably ascrew 17 is inserted through the top and bottom plates of the casing and into the sash adjacent to the outer face of the sash, and preferably a spacing block 18 is placed on the screw within the casing. Thus constructed and arranged the lock casing has an opening adjacent to the side portion 10 of the upper sash.
An improved lock bolt is provided which comprises a controlling bar 19 that is arranged on the bottom plate 12 to be guided on the inner side of the wall 13, and is adjustably movable longitudinally toward or from the adjacent side member 3 of the frame, the end of the bar farthermost from the frame having an upturned handle member 20. Theopposite end of the bar 19 preferablyhas a rounded corner 21 adjacent to the wall 13 to permitfree movement when the other portions of the bar are swung away from the wall 13. The bar 19 has also a flat bolt 22 extending laterally from the portion that has the rounded corner and through the opening in the casing approximately to the side portion of the upper sash. The bolt device is provided with a holding spring and preferably has a slot 23 therein at the junction of the bar 19 and the bolt 22, a spring shank 24'being rigidly secured in the slot and havinga plate spring 25 thereon that extends to the block 18 which comprises an abutment for the spring, permitting the spring to push the bar 19 over to the casing wall 13. The wall 13 has a lock projection 26 on its inner side, being preferably arranged opposite to the abutment. The bar 19 has a recess or notch 27 adjacenttothe handle 20 to clear the projection 26, and the bar has also other notches sash, but requiring that the bar 19 be tilted or swung awayto clear the projection 26 be.- fore movement'of the bar.
Another part of the improved fastener comprises a flat stop bar 30 of suitable length which is arranged on the inner face of the side portion 10 of the upper sash and secured thereto by means of screws 31- and 32 in a position so that the lower. end 33 of the bar, which is squared, shall be slightly above the ledge 11 to permit. thebar 22 to pass under or to be stopped under the end 33 to positively lock the two sashes in closed position. The bar 30 has a lateral stop projection 34; on its upper portion thatveXtends toward the adjacent side portion of the window frame, the corresponding side of the bar having a recess or notch 35 below the projection 34 to receive the bolt 22; and
preferably the barhas also'an intermediate recess or notch 36 to receive the bolt 22 when the sashes are re-adjusted. The bar 30 has straight parallel sides 37 and 38 that prevent accidental movement of the bar 22 when the sashes are moved up or down.
The bar 30 has a squared top 39 which may be engaged by the bolt 22, and preferably the side portion 10 of the'upperfsash has also studs 40 and 41 thereon in different positions, to be engaged by the lock bolt 22 to hold up the lower sash at different positions when the upper sash is not balanced and is secured in closed position.
In practical use, in orderto adjust the lock-bolt the handle 20 is pushed outward or toward the upper sash-and is then pushed so as to move the latch bolt in the desired direction. NVhen the bolt 22 is moved to the position indicated by broken lines .in Fig. 6 the lower sash may be freely moved upward and the upper sash if not stationary may be freely moved downward; if stationary, and the lower sash is moved upward the bolt 22 may be pushed over toward the adjacent portion of the window frame so that it may rest upon thetop 39' to hold up the unbalanced lower sash, and if the latter be moved higher the bolt 22 may be adjusted so as to rest upon the stud fO or higher up upon the stud 4:1. ll hen the sashes are in closed position the bolt 22 may be moved under the end 33 of the bar 30 to positively tion indicated by broken lines in Fig, 7
which permits the bolt 22 to be moved up to the stop projection 34 and limit the upward movement of the lower sash or the downwardmovement of the upper sash; and
if it be desired to partiallyopen both sashes the bolt 22 is drawnback into the recess 35 or into the recess 36, so that both sashes are locked together and may bemoved together up or down a short distance to regulate the ventilation of a room. The handle 20 is in such position so tobe inaccessible and can not be operated: by a person out side the window, but must be properly manipulated from the inside of the window.
Having thus-described the invention, what is claimed asnew 'is V 1. An ad ustable wlndow sash fastener including a casing, a; stop bar having a.
squared bottom and also a lateraljprojection at its top, and a lock bolt guided in the casing and constantly extending therefrom tobe moved sidewise either under the squared bottom ofthe bar or therefrom and bodily to the lateralprojection thereof, the casing having a lock projection therein, and
the lock bolt having stop shoulders to encess, the lock bolt being adapted to be locked in the casingat the difi'erentpositions.

ner side with-a lock projection, means to secure the casing upon the top of a movable lower sash adjacent to an upper sash, a lock bolt comprising a fiat controlling bar and a flat bolt extending laterally from one end of the bar and constantly through the opening in the side of the casing approximately to the upper sash, the controlling bar being movably guided against the guide Wall of the casing and having a handle member extending upward on the opposite end thereof, the controlling bar having recesses therein to receive the lock projection of the guide wall, and a stop device to be secured to the upper sash adapted to be variously engaged by the bolt.
4. In an adjustable window sash fastener, the combination with a long vertically-arranged stop bar having a projection on one side thereof, of a casing comprising a bottom plate and a side wall and also a top plate, the side wall having a lock projection on inner side thereof, the side of the casing opposite to the side wall having an opening therein, an abutment secured between the bottom and top plates of said casing, a lock bolt device comprising a controlling bar and a lock bolt extending laterally from One end of the controlling bar and through said opening in the casing side, the controlling bar being movably guided on the inner side of said wall and having a handle member on the opposite end thereof, the controlling bar having also a plurality of recesses in the side thereof to receive said lock projection on re-adjustment of the said device, and a plate spring secured to said device at the junction of the lock bolt with the controlling bar and extending to said abutment between it and the controlling bar of said device.
