Description
W. 1. CALDWELL.
HINGE.
APPLICATION man JUNE! Patented Feb. 10, 1920.
WALLER JAMES CALDWELL, OF RIVES, TENNESSEE.
HINGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 10, 1920.
Application filed June 12, 1919. Serial No. 303,541.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVALLER JAMES CALD- WELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rives, in the county of Obion and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in hinges, particularly gate hinges.
The invention has for its object to provide for adding strength and accordingly promoting durability and wear of the closure or gate; to provide for readily adjusting or positioning the hinge vertically upon 7 the gate; to provide for firmly holding or clamping the parts of the gate together; to obviate the boring of holes in gate for receiving hinge-attaching and adjusting bolts; to dispense with use of washers; to provide for readily removing the hinge from the gate, as the removal of no bolt is required for that purpose.
The invention therefore consists of certain instrumentalities and features of construction substantially as hereinafter more fully described and defined by the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings is illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made as to the detailed construction and arrangement of parts without de arting from the spirit or scope of the su ject matter covered by the claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my hinge, shown as applied to the fragmental repre-- sentation of a gate which may be of the farm type or otherwise.
Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof.
Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 represent separate or disassembled perspective views of the constituent parts or members of my hinge.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a hinge, designated generally as 1, the member thereof attached to the gate 2, being designated as 1*, which gate attached member '1 is preferably in the form of a strap 1, after the strap-hinge type. The gateattached strap member 1 is preferably bent upon itself to form an end socket or eye 3, for the reception of the usual pintle or pivoting member 3 for effecting connection therebetween and the hinge-post member 3 of the hinge, as well understood. The terminal of the socket forming portion of the hinge-member 1 and the main or body por tion of said member 1, are provided with coinciding or registering orifices or apertures at, 5, respectively, two of which coincident apertures or orifices are positioned quite closely to the hinge-pintle receiving socket or eye 3, to provide particularly for hinging the gate closely thereto and accordingly aiding the gate-hinging post to share in receiving the weight of the gate.
A further element of my invention consists of an approximately U-shaped bolt or staple 6 which is adapted to embrace or clamp opposite upright-members 7, say, at the hinging end of the gate, one of the leg members or terminals of said bolt or staple 6 being received by the registering or coincident apertures 4, 5, of the hinge-member l said staple or bolt therefore cooperating with said hinge-member in aiding the hingepost to share in receiving the weight of the gate. The other leg or terminal of the staple or bolt 6 may be received by either of two relatively closely arranged apertures or orifices 8, 9, in the hinge-1ne1nber 1 which cooperate with the apertures or orifices at, 5, in said hinge-member to provide for securing the bolt or staple in clamped position upon the gate, aided by suitable nuts 10 applied to the legs of the staple, and also to provide for the vertical adjustment of the hinge-member, as well as the companion hinge-member, upon the gate as may be required under certain conditions. It will be noted that, as the legs or terminals of the staple or clamp 6 are adapted to embrace the gate upright-members at their lateral edges, and are not required to be passed or inserted therethrough, no boring of said gate upright-members is required, as would otherwise be necessary for the adjustment and retention of said hinge-member upon the gate, as is apparent.
In view of the foregoing description and the accompanying illustration, it is considered that the various additional advan tages as previously set forth herein, will be readily appreciated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A hinge including a closure attachable member having a pintle receiving eye formation at one end a member adapted to embrace end-forming uprights of the 010- sure and efiect connection therebetween and the first referred to member, said upright embracing member having its terminals passed through said first referred to memher, and means for clamping said first referred to member to said upright embracing member.
2. A hinge including a closure-attachable member of strap metal type having a pintle receiving eye or loop formation at one end, a member adapted to embrace end forming uprights of the closure and effect connec tion therebetween and the first referred to member, said upright embracing member having its terminals passed or inserted through said first referred to member, and means for clamping the aforesaid members together, the insertion of said terminals through said member being effected adjacent said pintle eye formation in order to provide for hinging the gate closely to the hinge-post and aiding the hinge post to share in receiving the Weight of the gate.
3. A hinge including a closure-attachable member of strap-metal type havin a pintle .receiving eye formation at one en a mem- WALLER J AMES- CALDYVELL.
