To all whom 'it may concern: I
it known that 1, Wi'LLL-mi P. HILLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Operating Device for "Window- Sashes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to windows having upper and lower sashes adapted to be moved up or down into open or closed position.
The obj ect of the invention is to provide a new and improved operating device for window sashes arranged to'permit of conveniently raising or lowering the sashes at the will of the operator and locking' the sashes in the adjusted positions. Another object is to permit of easily and quickly removing the sashes from the window frame for cleaning, repairs or other purposes. Another object is to dispense with the sash cords and sash weights, such as are now generally used for counterbalancing the sashes.
VV ith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features ofA construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying' drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of. a window provided with the improved operating device for supporting. raising, or lowering the sashes, parts being shown in section;

The lower and upper sashes 10 and il of a window areinounted to slide up and dow i the usual guideways 12 and 13 arranged o' the sides 14 and .l5 of a window frame L of usual construction. he sashes 10 and 11 rc supported on flexible supports 20 and 21. preferably in the form of steel bands, chains,
cables or the like. Each of the fiexible supports 2O and 21 is fastened at one end by suitable fastening devices such as nails, screws and the like, to the side 15 of the window casing, and each flexible support 2O and 21 extends through grooves 23 formed in the sides and bottom of the corresponding sash 10 or 11. The lower corners of the sashes 10 and 11 are provided with friction rollers 24 around which pass the supports 20, 21, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. The right .hand sides of the Liexible supports 20, 21 pass over guide pulleys 25, 26 journaled in a suitable bracket 27 attached to a detachable portion 28 forming' part of the side 14 of the window frame 16, as plainly illustrated in the drawings. This detachable portion 2S is of a height exceeding that of a. sash and is of a width corresponding' to that of both sashes 10 and 11, as plainly shown in Fig. 2. The detachable portion 28 is preferably provided with beveled sides fitting correspondingly shaped walls of an opening 29 formed in the side 14 and normally closed by the detachable portion 2S. The detachable portion 28 can be moved into the hollow side 14 whenever it is desired to remove the sashes from the window casing' for repairs or other purposes, as hereinafter more fully explained.
rThe flexible supports 2() and 21 extend from the guide pulleys 25 and 26 to the right and wind and unwind on drums 4() and 41 mounted to rotate loosely on a drum shaf 42 having a detachable extension in the form of an operating shaft 43 provided at its forward end with a polygonal portion 44 extending through a bearingor bushing 45 formed in the front 46 of the side 14 of the window frame or casing 16. The operating shaft 43 is made hollow and through it eX- tends a screw rod 47 having its inner threaded end 48 screwing into the forward end OfA the drum shaft 42 to couple the shafts 42 and 43 together. The outer end of the screw rod 47 is provided with a handle 49 abutting against the outer end of the polygonal portion 44 of the operating shaft 43 at the time the screw rod 47 is screwed up to couple the shafts 42 and 43 together. The rear portion of the druin shaft 42 is mounted to turn and to sli-de in bearings 50, 51, of which the bearing 50 is attached to the side 14 of the window frame. The shaft 43 is mounted'to turn and to slide in bearings 52 and 53, of which the bearing 52 is attached to the side 14. In
practice, the bearings 51 and 53 are attached Jto or form part of a bracket 54 secured to the detachable portion 28. On the shaft 42 intermediate the drums and 41 is secured a coupling member 55, preferably in the form of a toothed wheel and provided on the rear face with coupling pins 56 adapted to engage coupling recesses 57 in the front face of the drum 41, and the front face of the coupling member is provided with coupling pins 58 adapted to engage recesses 59 formed in the rear face of the drum 40. Thus on moving the shaft 42 lengthwise the coupling member can be moved in engagement with the drum 40 or with the drum 41 according` to which of the sashes 10 or 11 is to be raised or lowered at the time. Thus, as shown in Fig. 2, the pins 56 of the clutch member 55 are in engagement with the drum 41 and when the shaft 42 is rotated in one direction then the support 21 is wound up on the drum and consequently the upper sash 11 is raised, and when the sha-ft 42 is turned in the opposite direction then the flexible support 21 unwinds from the drum 41 thus producing a slack in the flexible support 21 and thereby allowing the sash 11 to slide downward by its own weight. lWhen the lshaft 43 is drawn forwardly by the operator having hold of the handle 49 then the pins 56 of the clutch member 55 disengage the drum 41, and the pins 5S of the clutch member 55 then engage the recesses 59 of the drum 40 to allow of turning the latter for raising or lowering the lower sash 10 according to the direction in which the shaft 42 is turned.
In order to permit of conveniently turning the driving shaft 43 and with it the drum shaft 42, use is made of a wheel 60 having its hub 61 provided with a polygonal bore 62 through which extends the polygonal part 44 of the shaft 43. rlhe hub 61 is provided with a toothed wheel 63 engaging a bearing 64 formed in the back of a plate 65 secured to the face of the front 46 of the casing side 14. An extension handle 66 is mounted to slide in a bearing in the wheel 60 and the handle is provided with a slot l67 through which extends a pin 68 held on the wheel 60. By the arrangement described the handle 66 'may be moved outward into extended position, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6, to permit of conveniently turning the wheel 6() and with it the shaft 43 couv` pled to the shaft 42 to rotate the latter for winding up or unwinding the corresponding ' exible support 20 or 21, as above explained. The toothed wheel 63 is adapted to be engaged by a locking bolt 69 mounted to slide in the bearing 65 and serving to normally lock the said toothed wheel 63 and the hand wheel 60 to Vprevent accidental turning of the shafts 43 and 42. i'
In prder to lock the drum 40 or the drum 41 or both against rotation at the time the pins 57, 58 are out of engagement with the drums 41, 40, the following arrangement is made: The drums 40 and 41 are provided with toothed locking wheels 70, 71 adapted to be engaged by the ends 72, 73 of a locking plate 74 mounted to slide transversely in guideways 75 formed in the bearings 53, 51. The plate 74 is provided at or near its middle with a forlr 76 stradd'ling the clutch member 55 so that when the latter is shifted transversely on shifting the drum shaft 42 as previously explained then a like transverse sliding motion is given to the locking plate 74 to move the enes 7 2, 73 thereof in or out of engagement with the toothed wheels 70, 71. When the several parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2 then the drum 41 is coupled with the shaft 42 to rotate with the same and the end 73 of the locking plate 74 is now out of engagement with the toothed wheel 71 of the drum 41 while the other end 72 of the lockingplate 74 is in engagement'with the toothed wheel 470 of the drum 40 to hold the latter against rotation while the drum 41 is free to rotate on turning the handle 66 for raising or lowering the upper sash 11, as above explained. lllhen the shaft 42 is moved forwardly to couple the shaft with the drum 40, as pre viously explained, then the end 72 of the locking plate 74 moves out of engagement with the toothed wheel 70 while the end 73 of the locking plate 74 moves into engagement with the toothed wheel 71 to hold the lat-ter against rotation while allowing turning of the drum 40 for raising or lowering the lower sash 10.

The shaft if?, in this forward position is disengaged from the bearing 50 and engages both bearings 5l and The shaft 43 is now detached from the shaft l2 by the operator turning the hand wheel 49 to unscrew the screw rod 47 from the shaft l2 and to allow of moving this shaft f3 out of engagement with the shaft The operator now detaches the portion 28 from the side la thus allowing the right hand side of the sashes l0 or l1 to be moved into the opening- 29 of the side lli with a view to allow disengaging of the left hand side of the corresponding sash l0 or 11 from the corresponding guideway at the side 15 and to allow of swinging the released left side of the sash l() or ll forward until it clears the front of the window casing. Jiflhen this has been done, the operator by pulling the corre sponding sash 10 or 1l from the right to the left disengages the same from the opening` 29. It will be noticed that during this manipulation of the sashes 'l0 and l1 they are freed of the flexible supports 2O and 2l and the sashes after being removed can be cleaned or repaired as the case may be.
The flexible supports 20 and 21 if in the form of sprocket chains pass around sprocket drums which when rotated cause the sprocket chains to raise and lower the sashes as above explained,
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An operating device for window sashes, comprising 5flexible supports, one supporting an upper sash and one supporting a lower sash, one end of each support being fixed to the window casing, each support extending along the sides and bottom of the corresponding sash to support the same. drums on which wind and unwind the other ends of the said supports, drum shaft mounted to slide and on which the drums are mounted to rotate loosely, a coupling having coupling members on the said drums and having a coupling member fixed on the drum shaft between the drums and adapted to engage either of the coupling members on the drums to rotate the coupled drums on turning the drum shaft, and a drum lock,-
ing device controlled by the said drum shaft and adapted to alternately lock the drums on moving the coupling member on the drum shaft out of engagement with the coupling members on the drums.
2. An operating device for window sashes, comprising flexible supports,` one supporting an upper sash and one supporting a lower sash, one end of each support being fixed to the window casing, each support extending along the sides anl bottom of the corresponding sash to support the same, drums on which wind and unwind the other ends of the said supports, a drum shaft mounted to slide and on which the drums are mounted to rotate loosely, a coupling having coupling members on the said drums and having a coupling member fixed on the drum shaft and adapted to engage either of the coupling members on the drums to rotate the coupled drums on turning the drum shaft, and a sash locking device adapt ed to engage the sashes to lock them against movement, the said locking device being controlled by the said shaft.

An operating device for window sashes, comprising fiexible supports, one supporting an upper sash and one supporting a lower sash, one end of each support being fixed, each support extending along the sides and bottom of the corresponding sash to support the same, drums on which wind and unwind the other ends of the said supports, a drum shaft mounted to slide and on wnich the drums are mounted to rotate loosely, a coupling having coupling members on the said drums and having a coupling member fixed on the drum shaft and adapted to engage' either of the coupling members on the drums to rotate the coupled drums on turning the drum shaft, locking members adapted to engage the sashes to lock the same against movement, a rack on which the said locking members are attached, and a gear wheel forming part of the said coupling member on the drum shaft and adapted to mesh with the said rack at the time the drum shaft coupling member is out of engagement with the coupling members on the drums.

An operating device for window sashes, comprising flexible supports, one supporting an upper sash and one support-- ing` a lower sash, one end of each support being fixed, each support extending along the sides and bottom of the corresponding sash to support the same, drums on which wind and unwind the other ends of the said supports, a drum shaft mounted to slide and on which the drums are mounted to rotate loosely, a coupling having coupling members on the said drum and having a coupling member fixed on the drum shaft and adapted to engage either of the coupling members on the drums to rotate the coupled drums on turning the drum shaft, an operating shaft, means detachably lconnecting lOO the operating shaft with the said drum shaft, and means on the said operating shaft for shifting the shafts lengthwise.

An operating device for window sashes, comprising flexible supports, one supporting an upper sash and one supporting a lower sash, one end of each support being fixed, each support extending along the sides and bottom of the corresponding sashv to support the same, drums on which windl and unwind the other ends of the said supports, drum shaft mounted to slide and on which the drums are mounted to rotate loosely, a coupling having coupling members on the said drnm and having a coupling member fixed on the drum shaft and adapted to engage either of the coupling members on the drumsv to rotate the coupled drums on turning the drum shaft, an operating shaft, means detachably connecting the operating shaft with the said drum shaft, and means on the said operating shaft for shifting the shafts lengthwise and connecting or disconnecting the shafts.

A operating device for window sashes, comprising flexible supports, one supporting an upper sash and one supporting a lower sash, one end of each support being xed, each support extending along the sides and bottom of the correspondino` sash to support the same, drums on whici wind and unwind the other ends of the said supports, al drum shaft mounted to slide and on which the drums are mounted to rotate loosely, a coupling having coupling members on the said drums and having a coupling member fixed on the drum shaft and adapted to engage either of the coupling members on the drums to rotate the coupled drums on turning the drum shaft, an operating shaft, means detachably connecting the operating shaft with the said drum shaft, means on the said operating shaft for shifting the shafts lengthwise, a hand wheel slidably engaged by the said operating shaft and adapted to turn the latter, and a fixed bearing in which the said hand wheel is mounted to turn.

An operating device for window sashes, comprising flexible supports, one supporting an upper sash and one supporting a lower sash, one end of each support being fixed, each support extending along the sides and bottom of the corresponding sash to support the same, drums on which wind and unwind the other ends of the said supports, a drum shaft mounted to slide and on which thc drums are mounted to rotate loosely, a coupling having coupling members on the said drums and having a coupling member fixed on the drum shaft and adapted to engage either of the coupling` members on the diamisI to rotate the coupled drums on turning the drum shaft, an operating shaft, means detachably connecting the operating shaft with the said drum shaft, means on the said operating shaft for shifting the shafts lengthwise, a hand wheel slidably engaged by the said operating shaft and adapted to turn the latter, a fixed bearing in which the said hand wheel is mounted to turn, and locking means on the bearing adapted to engage the hand wheel to lock the latter against turning.
8. 1n a window, upper and lower sashes, a window frame in which the sashes are mounted to slide up and down, the Vwindow frame having at one side a removable portion exceeding' the heights and widths of the sashes, the said portion when removed allowing' thc sashes to pass into the openingl left by the removed portion, and an actuatingl device for the said sashes and mounted on the said removable window frame portion to move bodilywith the same on removing the said window frame portion, said actuating device including a sliding shaft made in sections, and means for detachably connecting the sections of the shaft.
9. 1n a window, upper and lower sashes, a window frame in which theY sashes are mounted to slide up and down, the window frame having at one side a removable portion exceeding the heights and widths of the sashes, the said portion when removed allowing the. sashes to pass into the opening left by the removed portion, an actuating device for the said sashes and mounted on the said removable window frane portion to move bodily with the same on removing the said window frame portion, and an operating device detachably connect-ed with the said actuating` device.
'10. 1n a window, upper and lower sashes, a frame in which the sashes slide having at one side a removable portion exceeding the heights and widths of the sashes, and an actuating device for the sashes mounted on the' removable portion of the frame, said actuatingdevice including a sliding and revoluble shaft having a detachable extension, means for connecting the said extension with the shaft, said means serving to slide the shaft and its extension, and means carried by the extension for revolving the said shaft.
ll. 1n a window, sashes, flexible supports for the sashes, a sliding and revoluble shaft, drums loosely mounted on the shaft and upon which the flexible supports are wound, and a member fixedly secured to the shaft between the drums and having means for engaging the drums, to canse them to turn therewith.

In a window, sashes. flexible supports for the sashes, a sliding revoluble shaft, drums loosely mounted on the shaft and upon which the flexible supports are wound, said drums being provided with recesses in their opposing faces, and a member lixedly secured to the shaft between the drums and having pins on its faces to engage the recesses or the drums.

In a window, sashes, flexible supports for the sashee, a sliding and revoluble shaft, drums loosely mounted upon the shalt upon which the flexible supports are wound, toothed wheels carried by the drums, a member fixedly secured upon the shaft between the drums, and having means for engaging the drumel to cause them to turn therewith, and a looking member operated by the said xed member for alternately moving it into engagement with the toothed wheels. l
