Beit known that I, EDWARDS. STIMPsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, havevinvented an Improvement in Feeler-Motions for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with vthe accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.A
The invention to be hereinafter described relates to feeler motions for looms, and more particularly to that type of feeler motions wherein the feeler member is held from movement longitudinally along the filling carrier by the filling on detecting beats un` tilthe filling is substantially exhausted and thereupon such |movement is imparted to the feeler memlber for initiating replenishment of `lilling. The present invention has special reference to improvements the feeler member and the parts associated therewith .to permit the feeler motion to be readily adapted for varying conditions of use.

The eeler stand 2 is secured adjustabl to the supporting plate 1 by a bolt 3 which passes through f an elongated slot 4 in the feeler stand to permit approximate adjustment of the feeler with relation to the associated mechanism. Such approximate adjustment Lenables the parts lcarried by the lfeeler stand to be placed in position for the feelerv to enter the shuttle on a detecting beat to feel for the iillin and the connections between the feeler van train of loom-controlling mechanism to be operatively related. Extending from the feeler stand 2 at the rear portion thereof are the lugs 5, 5, forming between them the space 6 through which extends the feeler member 7. The front portion of the feeler member 7 extends through a swivel-block 8 which permits the feeler to move lengthwise through the block and to swing as it is moved laterally or longitudinally of the shuttle. The feeler membei' also extends through a slotted plate 9 connected to the .train of mechanism for effecting replenishment of filling by a rod 10.
Between the swivel block 8 and the lugs 5 at the. rear of the feeler stand, is a bridge-piece vor carrier 11 towhich the I rearwardly into feeling position 'by a spring 15 interposed between the swivel block 8] and the bridge or carrier 11 so that by contact with the front portions oflugs '5, 5, the bridge ,or carrier 11 determines the rear- Award'position of the feeler member. From the-:construction described, it will be noted that by adjusting the feeler member longitudinally relative to the bridge or carrier, the rearward position of the feeler inember maybe very delicatelyI determined.
The bridge `or carrier 11 has the wing portions 16 which ride on the ways 17 i formed on the-feeler stand, and while supporting and carrying the feeler, the bridge or carrier prevents turning movement =of the feeler member about its longitudinal axis. v
The flling'engaging part or end of the feeler member is` adjustably connected to the feeler member to permit separate adjustment of the end part toward or from the shuttle-box. In the present instance, the feeler member is of circular formation and has a socketed rear portion 18 provided with screw threads 19 adapted to be engaged by the screw threads 20 formed on the shanl: 21 of afilling-engaging end holder 22, the construction being such that the end holder .may be adjusted to extend more or less beyond the end of the feeler member.4 The purpose of the holder 22 is to hold the .end part that engages the filling on detecting beat and it is adjustable, substantially as described, to permit the filling-engaging end part to be positioned with accurac for the accomplishment of its indicating unctions.
The filling-engaging part may be variously formed, and as shown, it consists of a metal or fibroid plate 23 having a series of teeth 2J: Ito engage the filling or. filling carrier. The end part 23 is provided with an open ing 25 and is adapted to be received between the jaws 26 of the endholder 23 through which may be passed the securing bolt 27 for securing the filling-engaging end part and holder in operative relation. By reference to' Figs. 1. and2 it will be noted that the filling teeth 24 of the end part are arranged in series with the filling-engaging end portion of the teeth in a line substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the bobbin when the filling-engaging end part is in feeling position, substantially as indicated ber in Fig.- 1. Owing to the normal inclination of the filling carrier, this arrangement of the filling-engaging teeth 24 permits the series to engage over a substantial length of the cylindrical surface of the filling in the shuttle and insure proper holding when the supply of filling is present.
The end holder 22 in addition to the screw threads 20 is preferably provided with a cylindrical. portion 28, Fig. 3, which, when the end'holder is in operative position,.en gages a complemental portion 29 in the end of the feeler member to assist in rigidly securing the end holder from movement Vrelative to the feeler member under the frontward shock on a detecting beat. Similarly, the end holder 22 may have the shank portion 21 adapted to find a rear unthreaded portion 30 of the feeler member 7 to further assi'st in preventing relative movement of the end holder and feeler member when the parts are in assembled relation.
From the construction described, it will be noted that the feeler stand 2 may be given an approximate adjustment on the supporting bracket 1, and thereafter the feeler mem- 7 may be adjusted relative to the bridge or carrier 11, thereby defining the rearward movement of the feeler member under the function impulse of its actuating spring 15. The end holder 22 is also adjustable in order to place the Ifilling-engaging end part 23 by more delicate. adjustment, in proper position for engagement with the filling.
It may sometimes happen by disarrangement of the parts owing to various causes, that when the lay oes back after a detecting beat, the end of t e feeler member may be injured by the end wall of the slot 31, usually formed in the side of a shuttle for entrance of the feeler. To obviate injury to the feeler member under such conditions, the holder l22 is provided with the bevel or incline portions 32, Figs. 1 and 2, which, by coming in contact with the end wall of the shuttle slot, will cause the feeler to be moved in a manner to obviate breakage or serious injury to the feeler member.,

2. A feeler member, a filling-engaging part having a toothed portion to\ engage the filling on a detecting beat, -a 'holder inten' posed between the feeler4 member and fillingengaging part and having a bifurcated end,
means for securing the filling-engaging part between` the bifurcated end of the holder, and threaded connections for securing the holder to the feeler member.
3. In a feeler motion for looms, a feeler member mounted to enter the shuttle in an inclined direction on eachdetecting beatl to feel for the filling and be moved frontwardly in a direction inclined to the longitudinal axis of the shuttle, a filling engaging end, a
holder for said end adjustably connected to the feeler member having inclined front shoulder portions to prevent injury to the feeler should the wall of the shuttle strike the holder as the lay moves back.
4. A feeler member, a holder, threaded connections'between the holder and feeler member for adjustably connecting them,
said holder having inclined front shoulder portion-s to prevent injuryl to the feeler should the Wall of the shuttle strike the holder as the lay moves back, a filling-engaging end part, and means for removably securing the filling-engagemg part to the holder to receive the impact of the filling.
