Description
G. F. KIME. WAGON BODY. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 16. 1918.
Patented Jan. 27, 1920.
rill/1111111- STATES PATENT QFFlGF;
GEORGE F. KIMEOF ELDORADO, KANSAS.
WAGON-BODY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. KIME, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eldorado, in the county of Butler and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagon-Bodies, of which the following is aspecification.
My invention relates to wagon bodies and more particularly to combination bodies which may be used as grain boxes, fiat hay racks, and header barges.
The object of my invention is to provide a wagon body or a body for use on farm wagons having sides and ends connected by hinges to the floor or bed of the body and which may be secured in a vertical position forming a grain box and which may be let down in a horizontal or flat position forming a hay or bundle rack.
Furthermore, the object of my invention is to provide a wagon body having supports connected to the floor thereof and extending outwardly on each side to support the sides of the bed when in a horizontal position.
Finally, the object of my invention is to provide a wagon body having a removal side and end pieces which are secured by stays on the upper edge of the side and end, the end pieces being of a greater width at one end than at the other, thereby forming a grain barge in which one side is of greater height than the opposite side.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawing. forming a part of the specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views in which Figure 1 is a top plan view.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is the side elevation.
Fig. t is a sectional view on the line 44 of Fig. 1.
F 5 is the end elevation.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view showing the end ccnstruction of the header barge.
In the drawing 1 indicates the bottom or Specification of Letters Patent.

bed of the wagon body which is provided with end supports 22 suitably secured at each end. Supports 38 are secured to the bottom intermediate its length and extend beyond the side of the bed and which connected at the outer ends by cross pieces l-l, the cross pieces 4lee providing supports for the sides of the body when in a horizontal position.
I secure end pieces 55 on each end of the bottom by means of angle brackets 6-6 which rigidly support the end pieces in a vertical position. Extensions 77 are connected at each end of the end pieces 5 by hinges 77. Sides 88 are secured to the bottom 1 by hinges 9. To the sides 8, I secure extensions 10 by means of hinges 11, the hinges being so arranged that when the extension 10 is not in use it is folded down on the inner side of the side 8 and when in use as a hay rack, the sides 8 form an tension of the bottom and the sides 10. the outer side pieces. The end extensions 7 are provided with hinged keepers 12 whereby the end extensions may be secured parallel with the side pieces 8 when the body is being used to convey loose grain.
In the construction of my improved wagon bed when used for the grain barge I provide end pieces 13 which terminate in the point 11 at one side and are secured on the upper edge of the end pieces 5 by means of the loop support 15 through which the end pieces 18 are inserted.
A side piece 16 is rigidly supported on the upper edge of one side of the wagon bed by suitable supports which construction provides a barge in which one side is of greater height than the opposite side.
In the use of my improved wagon body the sides and end pieces being secured in a vertical position by means of the end extension 7 folding parallel on each end of the side pieces and the keeper 12 being secured by means of suitable fasteners, the sides and ends are rigidly held together to form a tight grain body.
lVhen it is desired to use my improved wagon body as a hay or grain rack, the sides of said body are lowered to a horizontal position, said side pieces resting on the supports 1 and the end pieces remaining in a vertical position. This construction provides for the flat bottom hay or grain rack for conveying hay or straw. In the arrangement of my improved wagon body as a grain barge the side pieces 8 are let down in a horizontal position forming an extension of the bottom, and the side pieces 10 are elevated in a vertical position as shown in Fig. 6. Upon one of the side pieces 10, I secure the side piece 16 by means of a suitable support. The side piece 16 abuts against the inner edge of the end piece 13 which construction forms a grain barge as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing.
It is believed that the construction and use of my improved wagon body will be fully understood from the foregoing description it being noted that changes in the proportion and details may be made without departing from the scope of my invention.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination in a wagon bed, 01" a bottom provided with hinged sides and rigid end pieces, said end pieces being provided with extensions adapted to fold parallel with said sides, and additional pieces pivotally connected upon the upper edge or" the first mentioned side pieces, loop supports secured upon each rigid end piece, and end extensions adapted to be removably secured within said loop supports, substantially as described.
2. in a combination wagon bed, a bottom, a support secured to each end of said bottom, supports secured to the bottom intermediate its length and extending beyond the edge 01": said bottom, side pieces hingedly secured to said bottom, an end piece secured to the bottom at each end thereof, said end pieces being provided with extensions adapted to fold parallel with said side pieces, an additional side piece hingedly secured to each of the before mentioned side pieces and adapted, when not inuse, to lie parallel to said first named side pieces, a loop support secured to and upstanding from each of the end pieces, an additional side piece secured to one of the above mentioned additional side pieces, and an end piece removably se cured within the'above mentioned loop support.
3. In a combination wagon bed, a bottom having side pieces suitably hinged thereto, an .id piece rigidly secured to each end thereof, supports secured to the ends of said bottom, additional supports secured to said bottom intermediate the ends thereof and extending beyond the sides of said bottom, the above mentioned side pieces being adapted to rest upon said second named supports when in a lowered position, loop supports secured intermediate the upper edge or said end pieces, an additional side piece secured to one of the above mentioned side pieces, and tapered end piece removably secured within said loop support.
in testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE F. KIME.
