1,328,892. Specification of Application flleslilanuary e To oi; who-m is may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Pemrrn, a citizen of the Unit-eel States, residing at Philadciphie, in the county of Philadelphia and. State of Pennsylvania, have invente certain new and useful Improvements in Siarters Applicable to lviagnetos, of which the following is a specification,
The principal objects of the present nveniion are, first, to provide a starter eas ly applicable to existing magnetos, to provide a cci durable and eiiicieni; starter for Inc ice, to provide for reliably locking she sinrter when its spring is being set and for positively releasing it therea'fier, and in avoid. interference with the operation of the insgneio in case of accident to the starter.
To these and other enris hereinafter set forth the invention comprises the improve rnents to he presentiy described and finally cieimeri, i
In the description reference will be made so the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which- Figure 1, is side eleva'lzion showing a form ofthe invention,
2, is an end nioveci, and
Fig. 3, is a view of one of the parts (is cached In she orawings 1, is a frame and 2, is a drive-shaft, anri these are practically provisions of all usual makes of niagnetos. Usually the drive shaft receives one memher of a ririving coupling which is keyed on otherwise marie fast on it. According to my invention the cou ling member is taken Offllhe drive shaft an the clrive shaft 2, re ceives the rotary eiemencs of the starter, and the frame 1, receives a bracket 3, which carries the other parts or the starter, and so my starter may be easily, rapidly and inexpensively applied to existing magnetos without requiring any alterations therein.
The driven nieinher e, is keyed on otherwise fast on she shaft, 2, and it is provided. with a laiereiiy extending; hub 5, upon which is rotetahly monn'lsefl the driving memb r 6, the nut and. washer "5', serve to retain these parts place. in suitable annular confronting grooves 8 and 9, formed n the faces of the members i snci 6, are sta -rang; spring 10, and e hnzii'er view with. parts re- "ing 11.

elements 4i anti 6, engage the ends of these springs and she spring 10, may be sufi'b ciently stifi so ririve the magneto without substantial compression; although this spring is compressed when the car is cranked; manually and its recoil operekes to start or spin she magneto, it 'being understood that the driving member 6, is driven from the engine shaft for example, through the coupling lugs M, and by gearing not shown. The bracket; 3, is provided with a stud 15, to which is centrally pivoted a latch 16, one endi l'i', of which is adapted. to engage and disengage a tooth or any one of several teeth 18, on the driven member 4:, and the other end cl. which is acted upon hy a positioning-lock and by-shiftinmeans. The shifting means are not shown ut they may comprises wire, rod or the like atnicherl to the eye 19, and. operated by hand to cause tlieierch so engagige a tooth or notch. 18, The positioning ock comprises a spring post 20, pro ecting from the bracket 3, and provided with a roller with a cane engagement wish a tooth or notch and cooperaeing wish a. depression 22, for holding the latch. one of action. There is a stud or roiier 23, on the latch and. when the latch is in engagement with a tooth or notch. is clisposeri in line with a tapper, 2 on she driven member 6, which acting on the ssuri or roller serves to throw out the latch the member 4, is spun by the, reiease oi she sprin'glll The sterner can be nissalled upon any on isiing or usual ifnagneto by replacing E; usual coupling rnhmher on the shaft 2, the parts 4i, and 6, and, their, access springs, for these parts are not only ele of a sitar weir hut-- also, by reason of combined ihinness, in eflect constifscse a coupling eiernent in the sense that they can replace the usual coupling member. The bracket 3, with she'parbs which it carr is attached as by screws to the frame 1. necessary and. 'in order to meet the requirements o riiiiereni, usuei inagnetos, brackets nude 15, and spring posts 20, of ;lengths may be nrovided. In star? operator puts the latch 17, in action ueily so that it engages a tooth or notch 8, in the driven element 4i, and holds the V sins-i forward rotation, and the cam holds theiaiole-in-thekposibion.
cooperating ince- 21, to hold the latch in- When the" engine is cranked the driving member 6, isturnedforward, compressing the spri n 10,,a'ndca1is'irig a tappet 24, b
striking t e stud 23,.to throw out the late 16, whereupon the spring 10, being released turns the drivenelement 4, andspins the magneto. The positive lock mechanism "holds 'the latch out of action, because the spring post 20, or more-accurately the roller on its end, enters the depression 22, and re- .mains there until the engine is again to be started, and then the described operations are repeated. By facially grooving each of the driving and driven members and'so making a part of the cavity for the spring in, each, important advantages are obtained among Whichreference may be made to the following; The spring is free to work without binding, ample depth of stock is provided for supporting and attaching the projections 12 and 13, and ample width is provided for supporting the tappets 24, and for affording strong teeth 18, and no machine work is necessary on the grooves.
I It will be evident to those skilled in the art that the invention may be embodied in forms other than those described and illustrated in detail, and consequently the invention is not limited in that regard or in I neto, alatch arm termedlate its, the latch arins, ends, said notch and at its opposite end notched portion, a laterally disposed bracket adapted to be secured to a face of the magpivoted to said bracket inlatch arm being provided 'on its inner end with a biased nose adapted tofengage said notch and at its opposite end with two spaced noses, and arspring post secured to said bracket and extending laterally outward therefrom to engage said last two.
