KNOOKDOWN BED-SPRING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 20, 1920.
Application filed November 14, 1918. Serial No. 262,500.
p cation.
This invention relates to novel and useful improvements in beds, and more particularly to springs therefor. I
The object of the invention is to provide an improved knock-down bed spring, having a frame capable of adjustment to beds of different sizes and adapted to be readily applied and removed, as well as having independent springs mounted in a novel manner and capable of being replaced when rusted or worn, the device being simple in construction, strong and durable and providing a spring which will not sag.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be more fully described herein and set forth with particularity 1n the claims appended hereto.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, in which like reference characters indicate the corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved knock-down bed spring and frame,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentaryV edge elevation thereof showing the same applied t0 a bed, and
Fig. 3 is a disassembled view showing the manner of connecting the corner portions of the sides of the frame of the springs.
Referring to the drawings in detail, my improved knock-down bed spring is shown as comprising a frame including side portions 10 and end portions 11, the same being formed of metal orwood of the desired material. The ends of the sides 10 and the end portions 11 are rounded as shown at 12 and provided in their underside portions with recesses 13 designed to engage the side bars 14 and the head and foot bars 15 of a bed.
The side and end portions l0 and 11 are so positioned as to cross each other, and as the recesses 13 are disposed inwardly of the end portions, said extremities of the side and end portions will project beyond each other where they cross and where they are ydetachably connected by bolts 17 running vertically through the same. For this purpose, the side and end portions are provided with recesses 18 and 19 in their bottom and top edges respectively, so that the frame members overlap or are halved together as shown, with the bolts 17 passing through the halved portions.
The springs are designated at 21, preferably coiled in form and extendedbetween the opposed sides and opposed ends, thereby providing two sets of springs, one over the other, to prevent sagging under heavy weight. The ends of the springs are anchored to bolts or like detachable fastening means 22 passing through vertical apertures in the opposed frame members 10 and 11, thereby permitting the springs to be renewed when desired, as well as permitting the same to be expanded so that by varying the positions of the recesses in the frame, the spring frame can be applied to beds of different sizes. The arrangement whereby the spring supports 10 and 11 are adjustable relative to each other and to the side and end rails 14 and 15 of the bedstead is best accomplished by forming a plurality of recesses 13 in the members 10 and 11, a plurality of the recesses 18 in the members 10, and a plurality of the recesses 19 in the members 11, as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4.
From the foregoing description taken in connection 'with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation, and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the device as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in said structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: l
A bed spring support including frame 5 members overlapping adjacent their ends and each extended in advance of the overlapping portions, said extensions each having a plurality of sockets in spaced relation adapted to be adjustably engaged with a sustaining element, and means for adjust- 1 0 ably coupling the overlapping portions of the frame members.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature hereto.
GEORGE A. C. MONROE.
