To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, doi-rn SINKovior-r, a citizen of the YUnited States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning yand State of Uhio, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Rail Joints and Fasteners, of which the following is a speciiication.
The prin'iary object of the present invention resides in the provision of an improved construction in rail chairs in which the chair for supporting the rail is interlocked` with the supporting tie and locked to the rail whereby creeping movement of the rail longitudinally of the tie and transversely of the road bed is obviated.
A further object lof the invention is to provide an improved form of rail fastener having an interlocked connection with the tie and having arms detachably connected thereto for engagement with the rails, the fasteners cooperating with the rail chair to assist in supporting the rail.
l/Vith the above objects in view and others that will become apparent as the/nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then claimed, reference being had to the accompanying `drawings by like characters designating corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which,

Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings, there is illustrated in Fig. 1, a pair of spaced ties 10 for supporting the rails 11, the adjacent ends of which rails are supported upon one tie by the chair 12 and retained in position on the other tie by the clamps 13, the clamps 13 holding the rail immovable relative to the tie while they chair 12 holds the meeting ends of the rail immovable relative thereto and to the Vsupporting tie.
The rail engaging clamps 13 together with the clamp block are shown more clearly in Figs. 2, 3, t and 8 and comprise in detail the formation of a dove-tailed transverse socket 14 in theupper sides of the ties 10 into which the wedge-shaped blocks 15 are received, threaded projections 1G being carried by the ends of the block 15 upon which the clamps 13 are received, while block 15 is held immovable vertically by the tie 10. Each clamp includes a base portion 17 having a rail base engaging flange 18 extending above the tie for engagement with-the rail as illustrated in Fig. 3 and when so positioneda lock nut 19 is threaded on the projectingend of the portions 16 of the block to retain the clamps in operative position on the blocks relative to the rails.
Another form of clamp is shown in Fig. land in this form of the invention the clamp is especially designed for use upon the curved portions of a railway track, the clamp 13 having the usual base portion 17 for reception on the threaded projecting ends 16 of the blocks while a` rail web engaging portion 20 is carried thereby for purposes of strengthening and, bracing the rail at the point that receives the greatest strain. l/Vith this form of' rail fastener wherein the. block is embedded in the tie and interlocked therewith when combined with the clamps herein illustrated, the rail is securely held upon the tie immovable relative thereto and with the manner of locking the clamps in position liability of the rail engaging clamps becoming loosened is `greatly reduced.
'The chair 12 shown in Fig. 1 is illustrated. in detail in Figs. 5 and 7 and comprises a base plate portion 21 having a central de` to the Jfree edge of the plate The tie l0 and through a pending wedge-shaped portion 22 deiining a similar recess 23 tor purposes presently to appear. As illustrated in Fig. the rail 1l rests upon the base plate 2l ot the chair 12 while-the threaded bolts YT project through. openings 29 in adjacentv rail web portions' iish plate 30 atthe opposite sides of 'the web portions while lock nuts 3l are received on the projecting ends thereof. With this construction of chair, the chair is interlocked with the tie while the rail ends are securely locked within the chair 1Q and held immovable. l l
, lhile there is herein shown the preferred embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that various changes may be made inthe details ot construction oi" `the several parts when the device is operatively con structed, such as will fall within the scope oli the subject matter claimed. wWhat I claim as new is l. A rail chair comprising in combinathe threaded bolts projecting through said openings, a lish plate upon the opposite side ot said rail webs through which the bolts are adapted to project andlock nuts upon the projecting ends o' said bolts.
2. A device of the class described comprising in conf-,bination with a tie having a wedge-shaped recess, a rail chair embodying a depending portion seated in said recess, a wedge-shaped block within said ydepending portion, meeting rail ends seated upon the base plate and the block, rail engaging members carried by the baseplate, bolts carried by one ot said rail engaging members adapted tor passing through the web portions of the rails, and lock nuts received on the projecting ends thereof.
8. A rail chair comprising a base plate, a depending portion centrally carried thereby, an integral flange formed at one edge of the base plate, a plate hinged to the other edge of the base plate, and rail engaging bolts carried by 'the free edgevothe last named plate.
