Description
J. H. GREEN.
Improvement in Combined Chairs and Beds. N0- 132,826. Patented Nov.5,1872.
W f w 4M. PHOTD-LITHOGRAFHIC CQMXMSBIJRNES PROCESS) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN H. GREEN, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED CHAIRS AND BEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 132,826, dated November 5, 1872.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JONATHAN H. GREEN, of Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Folding Bed and Seat, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side view of my improved de vice folded into a chair. Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal section of the same extended to serve as a bed, taken through the line as m, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved folding-bed which may be readily folded into a neat and compact chair, which, when opened out, shall be a convenient and serviceable bed; and it consists in the combi nation of the legs, three frames, and the arms with each other, as hereinafter more fully described.
A are the legs, made like the legs of a chair, and which'are attached to the four corners of the frame B. To the forward bar of the frame B is hinged the bar of a frame, 0, similar in 7 form and size to the frame B, in such a way that the frame 0 may be turned back upon the frame B or opened out, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. To the bar of the frame-0 is pivoted the end of the frame D in such a way that it may be turned down to serve as the head part 7 of the bed, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, or turned turned down, serve as feet for the head part of the bed. The arms E are rigidly attached to the frame D, and when the device is folded into a chair their free ends enter sockets in the frame 0, where they may be secured by spring catches, if desired.
As thus described the frame 0 is supported only by its hinges, and for ordinary uses this will be suflicient; but the said frame may be provided with one or more drop-legs, if desired. The frame B need be upholstered only upon its upper side. The frame (J is so upholstered that one side may serve as a seat for the chair and the other side as a mattress for the middle part of the bed. The frame D is so upholstered that one side may be a back for the chair and the other side may serve as a mattress for the upper or head part of the bed.
The cross-bars of the frames B O D should be curved downward slightly, or be hollowed out upon their upper sides to give room for the upholstery or mattress.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- The chair composed of supporting-frame B having legs A, the seat-frame G hinged to said frame B, and the back-frame D having arms attached thereto, and hinged to said seatframe, as described, so that the parts of chair may be unfolded to make a bed in the manner set forth.
