HARRY'M. RAND, 0F WESTVILLE, NEW JERSEY.
VALVE-GRINDER.
Application filed June 3, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known. that I, HARRY M. RAND, a citizen} of the United States of America, residing at Westville, in the county of Gloucester and State oiNew Jersey, have invented new and-useful Improvements in Valve-Grinders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valve grinding tools, particularly to a tool designed for use in grinding the valves of an extremely popular make of motor vehicle engine, and has for its object the provision of a valve grinding tool engageablel upon a valve stem whereby the same may be rotated back and forth, instead of engaging the head of the valve, as is the ordinary practice, the advantage being that working from below the head the operator may lift the valve from its seat partially from time to timeto permit fresh valve grinding compound to flow onto the surface being ground. I
An important and more specific object is the provision of a tool of this character comprising a handle from which extends a clamping member engageable about the valve stem and from which also extendsa member adapted to be passed through the hole in the valve stem from which the valve spring retaining pin has previously been removed.
An additional-object is the provision of a device of this character which will be ex: tremely simple and inexpensive in manufacture, which is easy to operate, which will be efficient and durable in use, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of m device showing it in engagement with a va ve stem, and 1 Fig. 2 is a plan view, the valve stem being shown in section.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the letter A designates avalve of the type used in the Ford automobile engine, this valve including a stem B through which is formed a hole C within which is engaged the valve spring retaining pin, not shown. The valve is illustrated for the sake of clear- Spe'cification of Letters Eatent.

are formed from spring material which may conveniently be piano wire and the wires are twisted together, as shown at 13, and insert ed within the handle 10. Also twisted with the wires forming the clamping members 11 is a similar wire 14 which extends in spaced parallel relation to the: clamping members 11 and which is adapted for insertion through th hole C in the "alve stem. An enlargement or stop collar 15 is provided on the wire M for limiting its passage through the hole C. f
In the use of the device, the valve spring and its retaining pin, not shown, having been first removed from the valve, the operator grasps the handle 10 and inserts the end of the wire 14 through the hole C in the valve stem and engages the clamping members 11 upon the valve stem. It will be observed that'the wire 14: is of greater length than the clamping members 11 so as to facilitate its insertion within the hole C-before the clamping members 11 engage the stem. The tool being thus positioned, the operator pulls upwardly upon the handle 10' and consequently elevates the .valve A from its seat so that the proper valve grinding compound or the like may be placed upon the seat or upon the edge of the valve. The operator then presses downwardly upon the tool to reseat the valve and then he rocks the valve back and forth by swing- Cir jFrom the foregoing description and a study of the drawing, it will be apparent that I have thus provided an extremely simple and inexpensive tool whereby valves may be ground easily and expeditiously and in a highly etiicient manner.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is of course to be understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in-the form, construction, and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Havingthus described my. invention, 1 claim 2- 1. A valve grinding tool comprising a handle, a pair of spring arms extending from one end of said handle and adapted for resilient gripping engagement upon the. stem of a valve, and a member extending from the same end of the handle in spaced relation to said clamping arms and adapted for insertion ithin the valve spring pinhole in the stem. A
2. A valve grinding tool comprising a handle, a clamping member extending from one end of said handle and including spring arms engageable upon a valve stem, and a member extending from the same end of said handle in spaced parallel relation to master said clamping member and engageable with y in the valve spring pinhole in the stem.
3. A valve grinding tool comprising a handle, a pair of spring arms twisted t0- gether and extending from one end of said handle and adapted for partial embracing engagement with a valve stem, and a mem ber twisted about said spring arms adjacent their juncture with the handle and extending in spaced parallel relation to said spring arms and engageable through the valve spring pin hole in the stem, said memher being of greater length than said spring arms and being provided vvith an enlarged portion serving as a stop for limiting the, passage of said member through said hole.
-l. A valve grinding tool comprising a handle, a resilient clamping member extending from one end of said handle and engageable about a valve stem, and a member extending from the same end otsaid handle in spaced relation to said clamping member and extending beyond the clamping member and adapted for engagement within the valve spring pin-hole of a. valve stem.
said member having a projection thereon limiting its degree of insertion Within the pinhole. r
In testimony whereof ll athx my signature.
