Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LESLIE R. KIEHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eaton, in the county of Colfax and State of New Mexico, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pumps, especially designed for use in connection with steam boilers.
An object of the invention is to provide a pump, which may be connected with a boiler for the purpose of maintaining a uniform water level and for heating water before it enters the boiler, so as not to materially decrease the temperature of the water already in the boiler.
Another object is the provision of a pump of this character in which steam is admitted upon opposite sides of the piston, to equalize the steam pressure within the pump cylinder.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the novel formation of the pump cylinder and the arrangement of the steam and water inlet openings and the piston structure, whereby steam is admitted to the cylinder, and mixed with the water, which is forced into the boiler for the purpose above specified.
The invention still further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which the figures shown represent a sectional view of a pump embodying the present invention and in position for use.-
Referring specifically to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the pump includes a cylinder 10, which is open at one end and provided adjacent said end with steam inlet openings 11, this end of the cylinder being arranged within the boiler, a portion of which is indicated at 12.
Formed in the cylinder 10 and spaced from the openings 11 are water inlet ports 13, the latter being surrounded by a water tank 14:, or in communication with other suitable source of water supply.
Operating within the cylinder 10 is a piston, which includes spaced heads 15 and 16, both of which are provided with suitable packing rings and with plates 17 arranged at adjacent ends of the heads. The opposite heads 15 and 16 are connected by a piston rod 18, which passes through the closed end 19 of the pump cylinder for connection with a suitable operating power, the openlng provided for the passage of the rod 18 being surrounded by a suitable packing gland 20.
A pipe 21 connected to the steam boiler and the closed end of the cylinder establishes communication between said end and said boiler. In the operation of the pum water and steam is alternately admitted through their respective openings into the cylinder between the spaced heads 15 and 16, a water space being provided between the opposed ends of said heads. The water and steam thus admitted commingle and are forced into the boiler, so that the said water will enter the boiler in a preheated state. The pipe 21 conveys steam to the outer end of the head 15, so that the steam pressure upon the piston is eoualized. A valve 22 is provided in the pipe 21 for controlling the passage of steam through this pipe.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. The combination with a steam boiler, of a pump communicating with the interior of the boiler, inlet ports for admitting steam and water to the interior of the pump, means whereby the steam and water will co-mingle and be forced into the boiler and a pipe establishing communication between the boiler and one end of the pump for equalizing the steam pressure within the pump.
2. The combination with a steam boiler, of a pump including a pump cvlinder having steam and water inlet ports therein, said ports being spaced apart, the steam ports establishing communication between themterior of the boiler and the pump cylinder, a. water supply communicating with the pump cylinder and water inlet ports, a pistonoperating within the cylinder and comprising spaced heads to provide a water space therebetween and a steam equalizing pipe establishing communication between the boiler and one end of the cylinder.
