Description
1. w. IVORY. DENTAL HAND PORT POLISHE R. APPL ICATION FlLED OCT. 20; I919- Patented Jan. 6, 1920.
p I J Arm/m unitrnn STATES PATENT onnion.
JAMES W. IVORY, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DENTAL HAND PORT-POLISI-IER.
Application filed October 20, 1919.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, James W. I ORY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing .in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Dental Hand Port- Polisher, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in a dental hand port polisher of the type shown in the Letters Patent granted to me on the eighth day of March 1911, No. 1,021,527, and it consists of an additional device for firmly and steadily supporting the polishing member employed and adapt ing the latter to be clamped'tightly in position.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope ofthe claims.
Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of a dental hand port polisher embodying my invention,
Fig. 8 represents a longitudinal section thereof.
Figs. 1 and 5 represent partial, longitudinal sections and partial side elevations thereof, Fig. 5 showing a handle of different contour from that in Fig. 4:.
Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of the additional supporting device employed on an enlarged scale.
Fig. 7 represents a transverse section on line 77 Fig. 6'.
Fig. 8 represents a perspective view of another form of said device.
Figs. 9 and 10 represent partial longitudinal sections and partial side elevations of a modification.
Fig. 11 represents a side elevation of another modification.
Fig. 12 represents a perspective view of a modification of the additional supporting device shown applied in Fig. 5.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings.
1 designates a tubular stock or sheath which is connected with the handle 2 of the implement, said handle being hollow.
The upper end of the stock is open and has Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 6, 1920.
Serial No. 331,858.
therein in its sides the recesses 1 the bot tom whereof forms the shoulders 8.
4L designates a yoke which occupies the upper portion of the stockand has its crown Sadapted to protrude above the open upper end of said stock, said yoke having its sides 6 forming legs which are connected with the screw' rod or shaft 7 which passes through the handle 2 and has on its lower end which is threaded the nut 8 which bears against the bottom of the handle so that the operation of said nut in one direction causes said shaft 7 and consequently said yoke to be moved in downward direction.
Within thecrown portion of the yoke is the pin orplug 9 of wood or other suitable material which is adapted for polishing purposes, as in the patent heretofore referred to.
Within the sides of the yoke 41- is the bed 10 on which the polishing piece. may be seated and supported, the upper end of said bed being depressed and rounded to accord with the contour of the side of said polishing piece, said bed having on its sides the shoulders 11 which are adapted to contact with the shoulders 3 of the sheath at the bas of the recesses 1".
In the sides of the bed 10 are the grooves or recesses 10 in which are received freely the sides 6 of the yoke, thus assisting said block in position and preventing turning of the same.
It will be seen that whenthe polishing piece is fitted in the crown of the yoke and on the bed 10, the nut 8 is rotated whereby said yoke is drawn down tightly on said bed, and the latter held tightly on the sheath whereby the polishing pin is clamped firmly in position when the implement is ready for use.
In Figs. 9, 10 and 11 the bottom nuts 8 of the other figures are dispensed with in which case nuts such as 12 are employed above the handle 2 to engage lips 13 on the lower ends of the yoke, said nut engaging the threaded collar1t of the shaft 15 whose lower end enters the handle 2, and whose upper portion extends from and is connected with the bed 10, so that by the operation of said nut the yoke may be drawn down thus taking firm hold of the polishing pin or member 9 and tightening thereon.
The yoke is shown in various forms right lined and curved, and the polishing member may be variably shaped, as illustrated. but
to the shapes or forms of said parts I do not limit myself.
By the removal of the nut 8 in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4L and 5, from the end of the shaft 7, all of the members connected with said shaft comprising the yoke, the bed 10 and the pin 9, may be withdrawn from the sheath 1 for sterilizing or other purposes.
By the removal of the nut 12 in Figs. 9, 10 and 11, the yoke 4 and bed 10 may be removed from the sheath for purposes the same as above. In either case, as the sides 6 of the yoke occupy the grooves or recesses 10* in the bed 10, the latter is prevented from dropping from said yoke.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a port polisher, a movable yoke adapted to clamp the pin of said polisher, means for operating said yoke, a stock adapted to receive the sides of said yoke, and a bed adapted to be sustained on said stock within the sides of said yoke, said pin being adapted to be seated on said bed, the polisher being adapted to be seated on said bed and clamped against the same by the crown of said yoke due to the downward movement 01": the latter.
2. In a port polisher, a movable yoke adapted to clamp the pin of the polisher, a bed in the sides of said yoke, the polisher being adapted to be seated on said bed and clamped by the crown of said yoke due to the downward movement of the latter, a shaft, and a nut-like member engagea'ble with said shaft adapted to operate said yoke and tighten the latter on said pin.
3. In a port polisher, a movable yoke adapted to clamp the pin of the polisher, means for operating said yoke, a stock adapted to receive the sides of said yoke, and a bed adapted to be sustained on said stock, said pin being adapted to be seated on said bed, the latter having in its side recesses in which said sides of said yoke are retained.
4. In a port polisher, a movable yoke adapted to clamp the pin of the polisher, means for operating said yoke, a stock adapted to receive the sides of said yoke, and a bed adapted to be sustained on said stock, said bed having on its side a shoulder, and said stock having on its end portion a shoulder on which latter said shoulder of the bed is adapted to be rested.
