Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN V. Lucius, a citizen of the United States, residingiat Massillon, in the county .of vStark yand State ofOhio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Gaskets, oi which vthe following is la specification. n

Myy invention relates to improvements iny metallic caskets, and more particularly to that class or ty e' known as combined burial caskets an grave vaults, which dispenses vwith theiordinary outer or rough box commonly employed with the ordinary burial casket.

The primary'object ofthe invention is to provide a generally-improvedmetallic casket of this class which will be exceedinglyl'simple in construction, cheap ofmanufacture, and eiiieient in use.' s

The improved casket body is preferably madev up of a single blank of sheet metal bent longitudinally of its length into substantially U-'shape in cross section'forining bottoni and side walls l and l, respectively', as shown most clearly in Fig. 3 of the drawings.` `The end walls 1b are preferably 'formed o f a single blank of sheet inetal having the sides thereof bent inwardly forming welding flanges le, as shown most clearly iii Figa of the drawings.

s As a further means of reinforcing and ornamenting the casket body the upper and lower moldings 2 and 3 are provided with openings 2b and 3a, respectively, at the corner and intermediate portions thereof to receive and carry the ends of vertically extending corner and intermediate metallic'inoldings 5 and 6, respectively, said moldings being also of hollow formation and welded at their ends to the horizontally extending moldings 2 and 3, and at their sides to the side and end walls la and 1b, respectively.

The casket cover 7 is preferably of concavo-convex shape in cross section, as shown, and is provided about its marginal edges with a horizontally extending marginal flange 7 adapted to rest above and to register with the covering supporting and sealing member/1L, and as a means of hermetically sealing the cover to the casket body, the supporting and sealing member et is preferably provided with a gasket fl-b, and as a means of securing and clamping the cover upon the gasket ab, the supporting and sealing member a is provided with a plurality of threaded openings am adapted to removably receive and contain a plurality of threaded fasten-` ing members, in the present instance,in the form of threaded bolts 8 terminating in wing heads SL by means of which the fasterr ing members or bolts 8 may be drawn up. When the cover 7 is removed the fastening members 8 are also removed, as shown in the central portion of Fig. l of the drawings, so that the casket will present the ordinary appearance of a casket, proper, when the remains are placed therein and are reviewed oy the relatives and friends of the deceased.

As a means of removably receiving and supporting suitable slide covers 9 and 9, the inner upper marginal edge of the metallic casket body is provided with slide supporting members 10 provided with horizontally extending spaced strips l0d forming intervening guide or slide ways adapted to receive the marginal edges of the slide covers 9 and 9a, the upper strips being removed by means of fastening members or screws 10b, the removal of the upper strip l()u permite ting of the removal of the slide covers 9 and 9a, the slide cover 9 at the head of the casket being preferably of glass or other transpan ent material, while the cover 9a is preferably of non-transparent or opaque material.

The slide supporting members l() are preferably of non-metallic material, such as wood or the like, and the slide supporting members l0, in the present instance, extends beneath the slide covers forming tacking strips l0c to receive the nails or fastening members for connecting and supporting the upper edges of the casket lining material 1l.

The sides and ends of the casket body may be provided with suitable casket handles 12 of any suitable and convenient form. It will be seen that the edges of the metal parts and ornamental fittings are particularly well arranged for autogenous and other modern welding methods and processes, the casket, as a whole, presenting` an ornamental appearance, and the exterior metal parts being well adapted to receive a wood finish so that 'vertical corner and intermediate metallic column members eXtendingtherebetween, a casket cover supporting and sealing member carried by said upper marginal metallic molding, a casket cover provided with a marginal clamping and sealing` flange seated on said cover supporting and sealing member, a slide cover supporting member within thev upper marginal edges of said lcasket body, and slide coversin said slide cover supporting member beneath said casket cover supporting and sealing member.

2Q A casket, comprising a `metallic casket body provided about its upper and lower marginal edges with hollow metallic moldings, vertical hollow metallic column members extending therebetween and welded thereto, a casket cover supporting and sealing member carried by and welded to said casket body and said upper marginal metallic molding, a casket cover seated on said cover supporting and sealing member, nonmetallic slide cover supporting members removably mounted within the upper marginal edges of said casket body, and slide covers in said slide cover supporting members beneath the horizontal plane of said casket cover supporting and sealing member.

Ina metallic casket, a casket body made up of a single blank ofsheet metal forming bottom and side walls, end walls welded therein, metallic moldings formed about the upper and lower marginal edges thereof, vertical corner and intermediate metallic moldings extending between said upper and lower marginal metallic moldings, casket slide cover supporting members within the upper marginal edges of said metallic casket body and provided with non-metallic tacking strips adapted to support the casket lining material, slide covers within said slide cover supporting `members, a casket cover adapted to rest upon said upper marginal metallic molding, and means for detachably connecting said cover in position.
