Be it known that 1, JOHN MACKENZIE,

citizen of the United States, residing at.

Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seal-' i in the general nature of the seal lock form- ,ing bolt and the other mg the subject matter of patent granted to me October 8, 1912, No. 1,040,713.

One object of my invention is to improve generally'upon the construction of the lock covered by the patent referred to and make its construction more reliable and eflicient in operation and entirely practical in all important respects.

Another object of my invention is the provision of'a seal lock of thecharacter stated which will be composed of few parts to insure simplicity, durability and cheapness of production and which will prove highly desirable for use upon freight cars.

Another object of my invention is the provision of a seal or hasp lock which will retain the parts of which it is composed in proper relative position and which will secure the seal and co-acting bolt in proper relation and provide the necessary safe guards required in a lock of this character.

WVith these objects in view the invention broady stated consists of a rigid member or casing having a chamber and a receiving staple, a locking bolt slidable in the casing and staple and formed with a notch, a seal disposed in the casing and spaced away from the locking bolt, and a spring swingingly supported in the casing and having one portion to engage the notch of the lockportion bearing against the rear face of the seal to secure said seal and bolt.

The invention further consistsof a seal or hasp lock of the character described embodying novel features of construction and combination of parts for service, substantially as shown, described and particularly defined by the claims.

In order that the detailed construction and the operation of my lock may be more completely understood and its many advantages and features of merit be appreciated,

I have shown in the accompanying drawings a practical construction for carrying my invention into effect, but I would have it understood that I do not confine myself to the construction illustrated, but reserve the right to make any changes which fall within the scope of the claims.

The reference numeral 5 indicates the fixed part of the car to which the lock base 6, is secured by the fastenings 7, the car door of the sliding type is indicated .at 8', and is provided with a hasp 9, having the usual slot 10, adapted to receive the staple,

11, whichis carried bythe lower fiat part 12, of the lock, this staple has an opening 13, through which the bolt 14, reciprocates.

The lock consists of the chambered casing 15, through which the bolt 14 reciprocates. In the top of this chamber is a slot 17, which the pan shaped seal 18 fits and slides in. On the upper end of the bolt 14, is the protecting cap116, which rests upon the upper wall of the chamber 15, and covers said slot 17, thereby preventing entrance of rain, snow, or other extraneous matter. When in position the lower edge of the seal rests on the bottom wall of the chamber 15, and the upper part is confined behind the depending part 19, from the upper wall of the chamber, the lower part of the seal being held in place by the spring 20, which is hung on the pin 21, and has two wings or oppositely diverged portions, the outer of which bears against the seal 18, and the inner of which engages the notch 22, of the bolt 14.

The chamber 15 is open in the front so that when the seal has been removed, the spring 20, may be readily swung through the opening 23, and the bolt 14 be released. The pin 24 is placed in the bolt 14, to pre vent its removal. The lower end of the bolt is formed with a slot 25, for use with a seal such as indicated at 26, in Fig. 2.

In the operation of my device the bolt 14 is withdrawn and the seal 18, is slid into position through the opening 17. The hasp is placed over the staple 11, and the bolt with its protecting cap is pushed down through the opening 13, until the spring 20, engages the notch 22, thus locking or sealing the car door. The seal can be easily broken with a nail or any pointed implement.

The advantages of a lock constructed ac cording to my invention will be readily understood and appreciated by persons conversant with such structures and it will be apparent that the parts may be instantly secured in locked position and the seal be disposed to indicate whether the lock is safe or has been tampered with; also that the construction of the suspended spring causes one part to lock the bolt and the other to secure the seal; also that the lock is composed of few parts of strong and durable construction to prevent the lock from being damaged by the usual hard usage to which such locks are subjected; also that the lock may be applied cheaply to cars in use or at the time of their manufacture; and that generally in every important respect the lock will prove reliable, etl icient and practical.

I claim:

1. A lock of the character described, consisting of a base formed with a casing having an open portion, bolt receiving openings, and a hasp receiving staple, a hasp having an opening to fit over said staple, a locking bolt mounted in the openings 01 the casing and having a notch, a seal disposed in the open portion of the casing and visible from the exterior, device, mounted to swing through the open portion of the casing and consisting of a two part spring member compressible between the bolt and seal, one part of which engages the seal and the other part engages the notch of the bolt.

2. A look of the character described, consisting of an anchoring base, a casing mounted thereon, a hasp receiving staple and a pendant locking adjacent said casing, a seal fitted in the front of the casing, a locking bolt mounted in the casing and spaced away from said seal, and a spring locking member compressible by the bolt between the seal and bolt and simultaneously engaging said seal and bolt to lock the same in relative positions.

3. A lock of the character described, consisting of an attaching base, a casing mounted on said base and having anopen front and bolt receiving openings, a staple in line with said openings, a locking bolt fitting said openings and co-acting with said staple, and provided with a notch, a protecting cap and means to limit its movement in said casing, a seal movable in the casing and disposed in the open front thereof, and a spring locking member swingingly mounted and compr-ssible by the boltbetween the bolt and seal and having a part engaging the notch of the bolt and a partbearing against the rear wall of the seal.

4. A lock of the character described, consisting of a hasp havin an opening, a staple to engage said opening, a base carrying said staple, a chambered casing ad acent said staple, a bolt slidable in said casing and engaging the staple to lock the hasp, a seal in said casing spaced away from the belt, a pin between the bolt and seal, and a two part compressible spring locking member hung upon said pin, and having one free end bearing against said seal and the other free end having locking engagement with the bolt to secure the seal and bolt in relative positions.

5, A lock of the character described, consisting of a casing, a seal fitting in said casing at the front thereof, a locking bolt reciprocable in said casing in rear of said seal, and a spring locking device compressible between the bolt and seal and having a pair of spring arms, one having locking engagement with the bolt and the other bearing against the inner face of the seal.
