Description

F. CASPER.
GRIPPER FOB PRINTING PRESSES.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 12, I919.

PATENT onnron FRANK CASPER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD T0 WALTER J'. PAINE, 0F MAPLE HEIGHTS VILLAGE, OHIO.
GRIPPER FOB, I?RII\TTING-PBESSES.
Application filed April 12, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK CASPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grippers for Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grippers for printing presses, its object being to provide an improved auxiliary attachment to be applied to the grippers provided on presses of the bed and platen type.
It has long been a. common source of trouble to printers in making the sheets of paper lie flat upon the platen of the press, the grippers ordinarily supplied on the press engaging the sides of the paper only, and, due to the movement of the press and the suction created when leaving the surface of the type the paper moves, frequently result in poor copies. Various methods have been employed, such as the stretching of strings or rubber bands but this is a make-shift arrangement whose period of eflectiveness is of short duration.
The objects of the device as illustrated consists in the provision of means which can be readily adjusted to suit different work, the provision of device which may be simple and etlieient in operation, cheap of construction and one which, after being adjusted vertically along the gripper and to the proper position, will not become displaced due to the vibrations to which it is subjected.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a perspective view of the device;
F 2 is a sectional detail on the line 2-2 of Fig. .3; and
Fig. 8 is a sectional detail on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings in which like iuin'ierals designate like parts, the device consists of a gripper 1 properly secured to the gripper bar of the press, the method of securing same to the press being common and well known to those familiar with the "ll JOHN A. BOMMHARDT,
art, and illustration is not deemed necessary. Along one of the edges of the afore-eil Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 30, 1919.
Serial No. ceases.
mentioned gripper a plurality of notches 2 are provided for a purpose to be described. The attachment comprises a finger 3 formed as an extension of a boX like frame or structure indicated generally at 4, this consists in a stamping formed with a bot tom wall 5 which has its outer surface on the same plane with that of the finger 8. Thus it will be seen that the entire surface lies flat upon the paper holding the same tightly against the platen at all times. Sides 6 and 7 are formed at right angles to the bottom, the side 6 having its end bent at right angles to the bottom to form a top portion 8 extending the full length and substantially midway of the width of the structure. The side 7 is split a short distance from each end, thus forming the extension or finger 3, and the remaining portions of the side are shortened and also bent at right angles to form the other half of the top portion 8 opposite to the top portion 8.
A tension spring 9 is secured by means of rivets 10 to the lower portion of the side 7 and its lower end is formed in such a manner as to provide a' detent 11 which on gages the notches 2 of the gripper 1. The end of the spring remote from the side 7 is curled upon itself, thereby providing an operating portion 12 to lift the detent 11 from the notches when the device is to be adjusted.
I claim- A notched gripper provided with a frame slidable along the same, said frame comprising a rear wall with a finger projecting from one et ge thereof and having flanges at opposite edges thereof overlapping the front face of the gripper, and a spring secured to one of said flanges and extending downwardly therefrom and parallel to the notched edge of the gripper and bent to form a detent engageable in the notches.
In testimony whereof, I do aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
