Description

CHARLES REINAS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPINDLE-SUPPORT FOR LOOMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. so, 1919.
Application filed September 20, 1919. Serial No. 325,271.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES REINAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at'the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improved Spindle-Supports for Looms, of which the following is a specification.
Generally stated this invention has relation to loom shuttle boxes and has more especial relation to a support for the picker spindle thereof.
It is customary in certain looms of standard make to attach a spindle support to a shuttle box by means of two bolts and to vertically tap the support to accommodate a bolt for rigidly securing the picker spindle with respect to the support. Practice dictates that the constant impinging of a picker stick, upon its return stroke, against a support tends to jar loose such bolt. F urther the picker bufier requires repeated replacement, necessitating each time that such bolt be loosened. The repeated loosening and tightening of such bolt has the tendency to so Wear the threads of a tap, which has in practice but few threads, that in a short time the entire support must be discarded, although otherwise perfectly good.
The leading object of the present invention is to overcome the above recited disadvantageous features whereby the life of a support is materially increased without adding to the manufacturing cost thereof. A further object is to provide an improved construction which is readily adapted to existing types of supports whereby the same,
when no longer useful in their original state,
may be easily-changed in accordance withv the invention at slight expense.
The invention consists of the improvements hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, and in which Figure 1, is a. view in rear elevation, of a portion of a shuttle box construction, illustrating the application thereto of a spindle support embodying features of the invention.
Fig. 2, is a view in section taken upon the line 22 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3, is a view in section taken upon the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, the spindle being omitted.
In the drawings 10 designates so much of a shuttle box structure as is necessary to an understanding of the invention. Fixed to an upright thereof is a member 11 for accommodating one end of the picker spindle 12 and rigidly clamped to the other upright thereof in the support of the invention. Such support comprises a body portion 13 provided with an angular extension 11 against the fiat face of which is adapted to abut, upon its return stroke, a picker stick 15. The body top is provided with a laterally disposed boss 16, which is bifurcated as at 17 and is provided with longitudinally disposed apertures to receive a spindle end. The rear wall of the bifurcated portion is inclined as at 1819 for a purpose to presently appear and is provided with alaterally disposed'bolt hole 20 which passes entirely through the body 13 and communicate's with the bifurcated portion at the intersection of said inclined walls 1819. Adapted for passage through such hole and through an upright of the shuttle box is a bolt 21 provided with a head 22 having an opening 111 the boss so as to receive the end of said spindle. A nut is provided with the bolt end for drawing the head toward the inclined walls 18-19 which provide clear: ance for said head in order that the spindle and support may be rigidly clamped with respect to the shuttle box. An additional bolt 23 is present to assist in securing the support to the shuttle box.
The support as above described covers a construction embodying a support as newly manufactured. In the case of remodeling a worn support of the old type the procedure is as followsz-In such case the boss 16 is solid and has a spindle opening entirely therethrough. Passing through the boss top is a vertical tap communicating, with such opening for accommodating a screw for locking the spindle end to place. I first cut away the solid boss to form a forked boss thereby eliminating the tapped portion. The rear wall of the body 13 of the old type, adjacent the top thereof, is horizontally tapped so thata bolt may be screwed to place to secure the support to the shuttle box. This tapped portion is in the same plane with but at right angles to the spindle. I next drill through the tapped portion to provide a bolt hole which communicates with the newly made forked por tion for accon'imodating the aforesaid bolt 21. Thus remodeled the support is a duplicate of the aforesaid newly manufactured support. It is thus apparent that the invention is applicable to old and new supports; is inexpensive to manufacture; is efficient in securely clamping a spindle with respect to a support and'requires but two securing devices one of which functions in two capacities.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim is:
1. In combination a shuttle box, a picker spindle, a support for the spindle and means including a member which engages around the spindle detachably interlocking said spindle and support with respect to the shuttle box. v
2. In combination a shuttle box, a picker spindle, a support for the spindle and means including an eye-bolt, the eye of which engages around the spindle, detachably interlocking said spindle and support with respect to the shuttle box.
3. In combination a shuttle box, a bracket having a bifurcated lug and an apertured body portion, an eye-bolt the head of which is accommodated by said bifurcated portion passing through the said aperture and shut tle box frame, picker spindle passing through said lug and eye-bolt and a nut drawing the bolt to place thereby clamping the spindle and bracket with respect to the shuttle box.
4. In a device ofthe character stated, a shuttle box, a bracket provided with a bifurcated portion theears of which are longitudinally apertured for spindle reception said bracket beingalso provided with a bolt hole at right angles to said apertures and in communication with said bifurcated portion, an eye-bolt for passage through said bolt hole and shuttle box the head of which is accommodated by said bifurcated portion and the upper portion of the shuttle box being engaged by said bifurcated portion and a spindle adapted to pass through said apertures and the eye of said bolt and a nut drawing said eye-bolt to place. 7 I
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name. i
