DISINFECTANT ATTACHMENT FOR P OULTRY-ROOSTS. 7.
Specification of Lettcrs Patent. Patented Dec. 16, 1919.
Application filed January 20, 1919. Serial No. 272,089.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENNIE P. HANSON, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Bancroft, in the county of Kossuth and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disinfectant Attachments for Poultry-Boosts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a sanitary poultry roost attachment, and aims to provide an extremely simple and inexpensive device which can be readily applied to various poultry roosts, and which when installed will render the roost sanitary and vermin proof.
Another object of the invention is the provision of such a device which can be cheaply manufactured from sheet metal or other a suitable stock, and quickly applied.
A further object is the provision of a disinfectant attachment of the nature indicated which when applied will avoid the excessive evaporation of the disinfectant or solution,
for purpose of economy, as well as avoiding construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes can be made within the. scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is'illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of the device as applied to the roost, portions being broken away.
Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates the roost or perch which may be of any suit able cross section, being usually constructed of wood, but it will be understood that the device can be applied to various roosts of different materials and lengths.
The attachment comprises an elongated trough or receptacle 2 having closed ends, and as shown in Fig. 2, this trough or receptacle is of circular cross section but may be of any other suitable shape. The trough can be readily made from sheet metal or other suitable stock, and the edges are brought close together at the top to provide a longitudinal slot 3 of restricted or narrow width whereby to restrict the evaporation of the volatile disinfectant liquid with which the trough is filled from time to time. By thus providing; a narrow slot 3, this not only restricts the evaporation of the-liquid, so that it will last much longer, for purpose of economy, but, furthermore, this avoids dirt falling into or clogging up the device in view of thelocation of said slot immediately below the roost or perch 1. The longitudinal edges of the metal, as shown'in Figs. 1 and 2, are bent upwardly to provide spaced parallel upstanding lips 4 at the opposite sides of the slot 3 to give said slot depth and further restrict the evaporation of the liquid and reduce the possibility of dirt falling into the trough. Furthermore, the flanges or lips L can extend close up to the bottom or lower surface of the roost or perch 1, to direct the vapor against the roost or perch. These flanges or lips 4 also serve as convenient means for suspending the device from the roost by means of hooks 5 or similiar suspending elements secured to and depending from the roost. Thus, the flanges or lips 4 can be provided with registering apertures 6 to engage the hooks 5, thus permitting the trough to be quickly applied and removed, and it will also be free to swing transversely. The trough can be of any suitable length and cross section according to the circumstances and when filled with a voltile disinfectant or insecticide, the vapor in rising through the slot 3 between the flanges 4 will pass directly against the roost or perch, thus disinfecting it, and therefore not only exterminating vermin on the roost or perch, but also exterminating them on the poultry. Due to the location of the slot 3 immediately under the roost or perch between the sides thereof, it is not possible for dirt or foreign matter to fall into the trough.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. The combination with a perch, of hooks depending therefrom, and an elongated disinfectant trough below the perch having its longitudinal edges extending upwardly close together to engage said hooks and provide a longitudinal vapor outlet slot to be disposed immediately below the perch, the longitudinal edge portions of the trough having registering apertures to receive said hooks for loosely and removably suspending the trough.
2. The combination with a poultry perch, of an elongated disinfectant trough extending longitudinally below the perch, and suspending members depending from the perch, the longitudinal edge portions of the trough extending upwardly close together to provide a narrow vapor outlet slot below the perch and to enable said edge portions to both engage the suspending members, said edge portions having registering apertures to removably and loosely engage said suspending members.
3. The combination with a poultry perch, of an elongated disinfectant trough below the perch having its longitudinal edges extending close together to provide a narrow vapor outlet slot, said edges extending upwardly and providing longitudinal flanges along said slot, said flanges being below and spaced from the perch, and having apertures, and hooks depending from the perch and engaging through said apertures to suspend said trough. I
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BENNIE r. HANSON.
