To all 'whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNHARUHANSEN, a citizen of Norway, (first papers taken out in the United States,) residing at Parkwater, in the county of Spokane and State of Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-/Vater Heaters, of which the following is a specifi-r cation.
The present invention relates to improvements in feed water ieaters, for boilers, of the type generally adapted for use with locomotive boilers, and heated by the gases of combustion in the furnace.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a simple but efficient device for this purpose that is applicable for use in the boiler furnace and that maybe attached or detached when necessary, with facility and despatch, and which will require a minimum amount of change in the. boiler when such boiler is being equipped with the heater. The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts with which the boiler furnace .is equipped, including the reservoir or receiving receptacle and heater, and also in the manner and construction for connecting the members forming parts of the invention with the furnace and flues of the boiler.
In the accompanying drawings one com plete example of the physical embodiment of the invention is illustrated according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention.

In the preferred embodiment of the invention as illustrated in the drawings sufficient of the structure of the boiler and furnace have been shown to illustrate the applicability of the invention, and the usual furnace A, roof sheet B of the boiler, lire opening C to the furnace, and grate D are all of well known construction. rl`he back head E and back sheet F of the lirev box are utilized for the attachment of the heater which is located in the furnace directly below thecrown sheet G which is suspended by the usual stay bolts H. One of the fire tubes T of the boiler is omitted or changed as it Vpasses throughthe tube sheet I, and the usual form of brick arch J is located in usual position.
In'equipping the'boiler furnace with the heater of the presentinvention, the reservoir l and heater unit 2 are located beneath the crown sheet and extend between the tube sheet and back sheet of the fire box. The reservoir is of sufficient size for the purpose and comprises a rectangular box of metal extending horizontally across the furnace adjacent the back sheet F and above the ire opening C, and the reservoir is preferably fashioned with legs la for engagement with the face of the back sheet for holding the reservoir stable.
The usual equipment for feeding water to the boiler is utilized, and the pipe 3 which leads from the usual injector, has the customary water check valve 4:, and is connected to the reservoir by a short pipe 5 supported between the back head E and back sheet F of the furnace and a second branch pipe 5 forming an extension of the pipe 5 and connecting the back sheet with the reservoir. rlhe two pipes as well as the reservoir and heater, are supported directly from an attaching plate 6 which is secured to the back sheet F by the bolts 7 which pass through the plate, the back head and back sheet, and also secure the check valve of the water feed pipe to the outside face of the back head.
The joint between the two pipes 5 and 5 is completed by the utilization of the thimble or sleeve 8, which forms an integral vpart of the plate 6 and is seated, with a tapering lit, in an opening in the back sheet of the furnace, and it will readily be seen that the bolts 7 7 vwill hold the plate and its sleeve in rigid position on the back sheet. Stay bolts 9 are threaded into the plate 6 and reservoir wall and these bolts hold the reservoir and heater in position in the furnace.

The heater proper is of rectangular form with rounded ends, and the central branch 2 and parallel side members or pipes form an open device through which the gases of combustion may be permitted to pass Without obstruction therefrom, and in the passage of these gases the Water in the heating device is heated preparatory to flowing to the boiler through pipe l2.
The reservoir is attached to the back sheet of the furnace through the instrumentality of the two attaching plates 6 and 6 and the Water is fed directly into the reservoir and thence to the heating unit, being distributed through the three branches of the unit in order to enhance the heating capacity of the unit.
Claim:
The combination in a feed Water heater with the back head of a boiler and back sheet of the furnace, of a reservoir, a pair of alined Water inlet pipes extending through the back head from the Water inlet pipe, through the back sheet and opening into the reservoir, an attaching plate for supporting the reservoir and pipes and connected with the reservoir and fixed to the innerWall of the back sheet, and an integral, internally threaded sleeve on the plate seated in an opening in the back sheet and joining the tivo alined pipes.
