Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec 16, 1919 Application filed May 7, 1917. Serial No. 167,055.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER H. 001), a citizen of the United States, residing at Kildav, in the county of Harlan and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Railway-Dumps, of which the followingis a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My improvement relates particularly to railway dumps which receive loaded cars upon one track and discharge said cars, when 7 empty, from the same end of the dump and upon another track, the movement of the cars toward and from the dump being usually by gravity. 7
The object of the invention is to provide an efficient dumping structure by means of which loaded cars may quickly enter the dump, discharge their loads, and move out uponthe discharge or return track.

Referring to said drawings, A is an under-structure such as is ordinarily used for supporting car dumping mechanism, excepting that in the present case this understructure is modified to meet specific requirements. On the understructure is an approximately horizontal platform, B, hinged on a horizontal axis at B at its right hand or open end. The left hand or closed end of the platform is suspended by a cable, C. At each side of the platform one end of said cable is attached to the platform by a securing member, G which is attached to the platform. From said members, C the cable extends upward over two rollers, G on a rotary shaft, G which is horizontal and transverse to the length of the platform. A supported by or tion. This limits the upwardmovement of the platform. 'Below each stop member, A 1s a similar stop member, A at the proper elevation to arrest the downward movement of the platform when the desired limit of downward movement has been reached.
As will be described further on, the counter-weight operates to normally move the free end of the platform into its upper posiion.

ranged with their axes on two lines which are parallel to each other and to the length of the platform, and said wheels are supported upon bearings, F Said wheels make supports for, a tubular cylindrical frame, G, formed of longitudinal bars, G and transverse rings, G the latter resting on the wheels, F." Within said tubular frame are longitudinal track rails, G which register with the rails of the stationary track, D. Above the rails, G are upper rails, G which are above the path of the wheels, H of the car H. Said four rails are adapted to hold the car during the rotation of the tubular frame, G, for turning the car to discharge its contents by gravity. For further details concerning such a rotary tubular dumping frame, reference is made to Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,204,527, granted to me November 4:, 1916. The mechanism for rotating said tubular frame may be of any suitable form. For this purpose, the drawings show the wheels, F, on one side of said tubular frame mounted on a continuous shaft, F and an electric motor, I, mounted upon the platform, B, and connected with said shaft by gears, I I I and 1. On the understruc-ture, and at the right of the platform, B, a track, D, inclines toward the platform and registers with the track rails, G in the cylindrical frame, G, when the rails, -G, are in their lower position.

At each side of the space occupied by the platform when the latter is in the lower position, a gravity stop, A is hinged at A and has a cam face, A, and a shoulder, A in the path of the stud, B on the platform. When the platform moves into its lower position, the stud, B bears against the cam face, A and pushes the stop aside until the stud is below the shoulder, A whereupon the stop member swings by gravity toward the platform, the shoulder, 21, extending into the path of the stud and preventing upward movement of the latter and the platform. A cord, chain or Wire, A, attached to the stop member is to be used by an attendant for drawing the stop member out of engagement when it is desired to release the platform for upward movement. The counter-weight is preferably sufficient to lift the platform (when unlocked) with the empty car or cars from the lower position into the upper position, but not sufficient to lift the platform (when unlocked) into the upper position when a car or several cars, which are loaded, are on the platform.
On the structure, A, at the left hand end of the platform is a bufier, J, of any suitable form and standing high enough to be engaged by cars which tend to move through the tubular frame, G, while the adjacent end of the platform is in its lower position.
On the shaft, C is a drive wheel, C on which is a belt, G which receives power for driving said wheel and said shaft in the proper direction for drawing the platform downward against the action of the counterweight.
A brake lever, C is pivoted at C, and adapted 'to bear by one end against a brake wheel, C, on the shaft, C. A cord, C depends from the free end of said lever and may be'engaged by an attendant and drawn downward to cause the opposite end of said lever to bear against said brake wheel to restrain the upward movement of the platform in response to the action of the counterweight.
VVhen the platform is in the lower position and locked, and the tubular frame is so turned as to bring its track rails into the lower position, one or several loaded cars are moved over the track, D, into said frame, the cars being arrested by the buffer, J, or other means. Suitable blocking is then applied to the cars to prevent them from movmg in the reverse direction. The tubular frame may now be rotated for dumping the loads out of the cars, this being done by transmitting power from the motor, I, to the shaft, 1. To change the platform to the upper position, the hooks, A are now released, whereupon the counter-weight overcomes the weight of the platform and the empty ears and the platform rises until it is stopped by the stop members, A Then the cars are released and allowed to run by gravity out of the tubular frame and over the discharge track, D.
I claim as my invention,
1. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure lo'- cated adjacent one end of said track, a platformsupported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which ishorizontal and transverse to said track, and means on said platform. movable independently of the platform for receiving a car from said track and supporting and tilting said car for the discharge of its load, substantially as described;
2. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure located adjacent one end of said track, a plat form supported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said track, and means on said platform movable independently of the platform for receiving a car from said track and supporting and tilting said car for the discharge of its load, and means for raising and lowering the free end of said platform, substantially as described.
3. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure located adjacent one end of said track, a platform supported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said track, and means on said platform movable independently of the platform for receiving a car from said track and supporting and tilting said car for the discharge of its load, and means comprising a counterweight for raising and lowering the platform, substantially as described.
4:. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure located adjacent one end of said track, a platform supported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said'track, and means on said platform movable independently of the platform for receiving a car from said track and supporting and tilting said car for the discharge of its load, and means for locking the free end of the platform, substantially as described.
5. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure located adjacent one end of said track, a platform supported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said track, and a car receiving and supporting member supported by and turnable sidewise on said platform for the discharge of the load from the car, substantially as described.
6. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure located adjacent one end of said track, a platform supported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said track, means for raising and lowering the free end of said platform, and a car receiving and supporting member supported by and turnable sidewise on said platform for the discharge of the load from the car, substantially as described.
7 In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure located adjacent one end of said track, a platform supported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said track, means comprising a counter-weight for raising and lowering the platform, and a car receiving and supporting member supported by and turnable sidewise on said platform for thedischarge of the load from the car, substantially as described.
8. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure located adjacent one end of said track, a platform supported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said track, and a car receiving and supporting member supported by and turnable sidewise on said platform for the discharge of the load from the car, and means for locking the free end of the platform, substantially as described.
9. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure located adjacent one end of said track, a platform supported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said track, and a tubular car receiving and supporting member supported by and turnable sidewise on said platform for the discharge of the load from the car, substantially as described.
10. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure located adjacent one end of said track, a platform supported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said track, means for raising and lowering the free end of said platform, and a tubular car receiving and supporting member supported by and turnable sidewise on said platform for the discharge of the load from the car, substantially as described.
11. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure-located adjacent one end of said track, a platform supported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on .an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said track, means comprising a counterweight for raising and lowering the platform, and a tubular car receiving and supporting member supported by and turnable sidewise on said platform for the discharge of the load from the car, substantially as described.
12. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure located adjacent one end of said track, a platform supported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said track, and a tubular car receiving and supporting member supported by and turnable sidewise on said platform for the discharge of the load from the car, and means for locking the free end of the platform, substantially as described.
13. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure located adjacent one end of said track, a platform supported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said track, a car receiving and supporting member supported by and turnable sidewise on said platform for the discharge of the load from the car, and power mechanism on said platform for turning said turnable member, substantially as described.
14. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure located adjacent one end of said track, a platform supported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said track, means for raising and lowering the free end of said platform, and a car receiving and supporting member supported by and turnable sidewise on said platform for the discharge of the load from the car, and power mechanism on said platform for turning said turnable member, substantially as described.
15. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure located adjacent one end of said track, a platform supported by said understructure and hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said track, means comprising a counterweight for raising and lowering the platform, a car receiving and supporting member supported by and turnable sidewise on said platform for the discharge of the load from the car, and power mechanism on said platform for turning said turnable member, 5 substantially as described.
16. In an apparatus of the nature described, a car track, an understructure located adjacent one end of said track, a platform supported by said understructure and 10 hinged at its end which meets said track on an axis which is horizontal and transverse to said track, a car receiving and supporting member supported by and turnable sidewise on said platform for the discharge of the load from the car, power mechanism on said 15 platform for turning said turnable member, and means for locking the free end of the platform, substantially as described.
