To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. COLE, a

citizen of the United States of America, residin at Grant, in the county of Newaygo and btate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Pliers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

- This invention relates to a holder for pliers particularly adapted for use by linemen. It is a primary object and purpose of the invention to make a plier holder which may be attached to a belt which the lineman wears and in which a pair of pliers may be placed and held against accidental displacement when the same are not used, the pliers however, being very readily disengaged whenever wanted. A further object of the invention i to make a holder for pliers which can be produced at very low cost, and which from its simplicity of construction, is not liable to get out of order or to become ineffective in any way.

For an understanding of the invention and the construction embodying the same, reference may be had to the accompanying drawings and the description pertaining thereto, in which drawing:

The holder for pliers is adapted to be pe manently connected to a belt such as linemen use, a fragmentary portion of which is indicated at 1. The holder comprises a base plate 2 with attaching ears 3 at its ends through which and the belt rivets or similar suitable connections 4 pass to secure the holder to the belt. Two spaced apart arms 5 and 6 project from the base and are connected at their outer ends by an integral bar 7 which lies substantially parallel to the base 2. Bar 7 is slotted lengthwise from near its middle to one end over the end of the arm 6, and a lever 9 is pivotally mounted at 10 at the end of said arm 6, lying substantially in the slot 8. The end of the lever turns in and terminates in a prong 11 positioned at an angle to the arms 5 and 6 as Specification of Letters Patent.

shown. A coiled spring 12 acts on the leverand the bar 7, the head of the pliers being located below the loop and the handles 15 passing between arms 5 and '6, prong ll lying between the two handles. This prong insures against accidental disengagement of the pliers from theloop "as any upward movement of the plier brings the head of the same into contact with the prong, while, normally the handles of the pliers bear against the arms 5 and 6, the distance be-- tween the outer sides of said handles being greater than the distance between the arms 5 and 6 of the loop, rendering it impossible for the pliers to drop through the loop. The angle of the prongll is such, however, that by grasping the handles of the pliers and turning the same to one side, one of the handles 15 may be brought against the inclined side 11 of the prong and move the prong and lever 9 outwardly so as to free the pliers from the holder without the ne cessity of moving the lever 9 through the operating piece 13. The holder is thus rendered particularly serviceable, serving to hold the pliers against accidental displacement and loss at all times yet interposing very little or no obstacle to removal of the pliers when they are to be used.

The construction is simple, and one or more may be attached to the belt used by a lineman if one or a greater number of pliers are used by him. The cost of manufacture is low and the construction is particularly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.

I claim:

1. In a device of the character described, a base member having spaced outwardly extending arms and a bar connecting the outer ends of the arms thus forming a loop through which the head of a pair of pliers may be inserted, said bar being slotted lengthwise for a portion of its length, a lever pivotally mounted at the outer end of one of said arms and lying substantiallyin said slot and terminating in an inwardly extending prong located at an angle to the length of the arms, and spring means tending to hold said prong in inner position, substantially as described.

2. In a device of the character described, a base member having spaced outwardly extending arms and a bar connecting the outer ends of the arms forming a rectangular loop through which the head of a pair of pliers may be inserted, a lever pivotally mounted on said bar at one end thereof and having an end turned inwardly through the bar, and spring means tending to hold the lever so that said turned in end is yieldingly held in inner position, substantially as described.

3. In a device of the character described,

. a base member, outwardly extending arms thereon and a bar connecting the outer ends of the arms to form a rectangular loop, and a member movably mounted on the loop and extending through the bar substantially mid Way between its ends, and means for yieldingly holding said member in position passing through the loop, substantially as and for the purpose described.

4. In a device of the character described, a base member, two arms extending from the base member in substantially parallel relation to each other, the ends of the base member extending beyond the arms to form attaching ears, a bar connecting the outer ends of the arms, said bar being slotted for a portion of its length, a lever pivotally mounted substantially at the junction of one end of the bar with one of the arms, said lever lying substantially in the slot in the bar and having an end turned inwardly and passing through the bar substantially midway between the arms, said end lying at an angle to the length of the arms, a spring located between the base member and the lever for holding said inturned end in inner position, and an operating member for the lever extending beyond the pivot thereof, substantially as described.
