This invention relates to means for counterbalancing the plunger rod of a pump and the wei ht of the water raised thereby, to render are operation of pumping easier and more economical, and it consists in the construction and combination of parts forming a spring counterbalance for pumps hereinafter more fully described, and particularly stated in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:

The lower levers 14, each of which is hinged on a pivot bar 15, of the plate 11, so as to swing vertically, is provided with lateral arms 16, on which, and the body of the lever, a spring 17, stands. The top levers 18, hinged at 19 to the'jaws 12, and provided with lateral arms 30, to rest on the springs 17, are operatively connected at their outer ends with the lower levers 14, by turnbuckles 20, whereby any desired tension may be given the springs 17.
The jaws 12 may be shaped to engage either round, flat or square rods when forced thereon by the binding bolts 13. The baseplate 11, comprises a pair of half plates which are duplicates in size and shape, being cast from the same pattern; the shape being particularly shown in Fig. IV.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Each half plate has at one end a tang 21, and near the other end a slot to receive the tang of its mate when the halves are pushed together edgewise, and is provided with slots 22, which register when together to receive bolts 23, by which the two half plates are rigidly bound together to form a baseplate 11, to act as a unit when in service. The side bars 24, and the tangs 21, of both halves of the plate rest on the bracket 9, so that pressure on the hinge bars 15, holds both of the tangs down against the prying action of pressure on their own opposite ends, further increasing the rigidity of the half plate joint.
The open side of each half plate permits them to be placed around a pump rod before they are secured together. The slots 22, permit the said halves to be adjusted to pump rods of different sizes, and the bolts 23, bind them when adjusted. A little play should be allowed at the sides of the rod, the inner faces of the side bars 24, being shaped to fit as required, either round, flat or square rods. A thick washer 25, secured by each bolt 23, has a nick in one edge to receive a rib 26, which is cast on the inner end of each lever 14, to keep the latter in a vertical plane with the pump rod, whatever the adjustment may be to fit its thickness.
This whole device is composed of pairs of parts that are duplicates, so that a single pattern serves for the two parts of each pair, rendering it economical in manufacture and easily understood. The facilities for quick attachment to different pumps, and for quick adjustment to their respective loads adapts this device to be applied and practically operated by a traveling salesman to demonstrate its merit on the pump of any customer.
I claim:
1. In a spring counterbalance for pumps, a baseplate comprising two duplicate, transversely slotted half plates adapted to freely engage pump rods of difierent sizes, and to rest upon the top portion of a pump; bolts to engage the slots, and a notched washer on each bolt; a pair of levers hinged to the base plate opposite to each other, and having laterally projecting arms, each lever having a ribon its hinge end to engage the notch in one of the said washers; a pair of jaws and bolts to secure them to a pump rod above the baseplate, a pair of levers hinged to the said jaws over the first named levers, and having laterally projecting arms; a pair of turnbuckles connecting the outer ends of the tWo at each end'side of thesaicl notch, an cl-bolts V pairs of levers, and a pair of springs located to enter the slots in the two halves and rigbetween the arms of the upper and lower idly hold themtogether;
