Be it known that I, FRANK E. VAN DOORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county `of Adams and State of Illinois, haveJ invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shells for Deposit- Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This inven-tion relates tol certain improvements in shells for deposit boxes such as employed in banks or the like, and it is an object of the invention to. provide a novel and improved device of this general character including a nest in which the drawers or boxes are slid'ably arranged' and wherein the parts-comprised in the shell are assembled in a manner eliminating the use of rivets or kindred holding members.

It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein the shell and nests are constructed in a manner which assures accuracy in the fitting of the doors and the desired holding of the drawers or boxes and whereby the assembled device is of pronounced strength. Y

Another object of the invention is to provide a` novel and improved device of this general character wherein the shell is formed of metal with the joints thereof y welded and wherein the nests within the shell are formed'by interlocking vertically arranged and horizontally7 disposed sheets, welded, and preferably spot welded, to the shell so that the assembled parts constitute substantially an integral structure. An additional object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character includ-.

ingnovel and improved Vmeans for assemf bling the sheets within the shell to produce the required nests for the boxes or drawers and wherein provision is made for the proper fitting of the doors.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combinationand arrangement ofthe several parts of my improved shells for deposit boxes whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as willv be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novelfeatures of my invention will hereinafter be deinitely claimed.

ln order that my invention may be lthe better understood, l will now' proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

As herein embodied my improved shell comprises the side walls l and the top and bottom walls 2. 2 are connected or united as indicated by 8' through the medium of acetylene or electric arc welding, the said connections or joints rounded, although, as illustrated in Fig. 5, said corners may be substantially square and in which instance the coacting ends of adjacent walls 1 and 2 are suitably beveled as indicated at 3a.

The shell or structure provided by the assembled walls l and 2 are interseeted 'by the vertically disclosed and Vequi-distantly spaced sheets 4f which are secured to the upper and lower walls 2 by spot welding` as indicated at 5 so that when mounted or assembled within the frame or shell said sheets 4; comprise substantially an integral part of the structure.

VThe forward vertical marginal portions of the sheets 4: and corresponding marginal portions of the side walls 1 are provided with the vertically and equi-distantly spaced open slots or` recesses 6 in which are adapted to snugly fit. the closed end portions 7 of the slots 8 formed in the horizontally arranged sheets 9 intersecting the shell or frame. The assembled sheets 4l. and 9 provide within the shell or frame the nests N each of which is adapted to slidably receive in a conventional manner a deposit box or the like of ordinary construction.

Spotv welded as at 11 to the opposed side walls of each of the nests N are the supplemental plates 12 completely bridging the space between adjacent horizontal sheets 9 or between a sheet 9 and a top or bottom 4wall 2. The supplemental sheets 12 have their front ends terminating inwardly of the front edges of the sheets 4 and 9 so that doors of a common type may be effectively employed in A connection with the nests N. As the doors form no part of my present invention a detailed description and illustration thereof is believed to be unnecessary.

Through the instrumentality of the supplemental plates 12 each of the nests is materially"reinforced and strengthened resulting in the desired accuracy in holding'the deposit boxes and also assuring the accurate fitting of the doors.l in effecting the various joints and connections by welding in place of the oldmethod of dove-tailing at a few points and hand riveting, the resultant structure is of pronounced strength so that in handling thel same the. nests will not be thrown out of true resulting in the binding of the boxes therein and of the doors.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a shell for deposit boxes constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and fa- Y eility with which it may be assembled and operated and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some cha-nge and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this `reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the vprecise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in .carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.

I claim:

1. A structure of the class described comprising a frame, vertically disposed sheets intersecting the frame and Vhorizontally spaced, the forward vertical marginal portions of said sheets being provided with open end slots, and horizontally disposed and vertically spaced sheets intersecting the frame and provided with slots whereby the vertically disposed sheets and horizontally disposed sheets interfit to provide nests, the opposed side walls of each of the nests `having secured thereto supplemental plates bridging and snugly fitting within the space between the top and bottom walls ofthe nests.

A structure of theclass described comprising a frame, vertically disposed sheets intersecting the frame and Vhorizontally spaced, the forward vertical marginal portions of said sheets being provided with open end slots, and horizontally disposed and vertically spaced sheets intersecting the frame and providedwith slots whereby the vertically disposed sheets and horizontally disposed sheets interlit to provide nests, the opposed side walls of each of the nests having secured thereto supplemental plates bridging and snugly tting within the space between the top and bottom walls of the nests, said supplemental sheets being held in position by spot welding.
