Description

A. H. PORTER.
AUTOMATIC ST|RRUP.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 22. m9.
Patented Dec. 2, 1919.
W//VESSES @M7772 rarnrar ernten AUTOMATIC STIRRUE.
i To all whom t may concern:
from the stirrup strap'if it should becomeV necessary to quickly release the same.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a stirrup of this character which Y will have a tripping arrangement designed to be readily engaged by the foot of the person driving the animal whereby the device will be quickly unlocked or detached when required.
A further object ofthe invention is to provide a device of this character which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices ofv this character are Ordinar'- ily subjected.V
For a full description of the invention and the advantages and merits thereof, reference is -to be had `to the following` description and accompanying drawings, in which :f-
Figure 1 is an edge elevation of the device constructed in accordance with my inven tion,
Fig. 2 vis a side elevation of the same partly broken away to show some of the parts in section,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation partly in section.
Referring to the drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which like characters of reference indicate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, the stirrup 1 is U- shaped in the usual manner and includes the parallel arms 2 each of which has its upper free end provided with a slot 3. The trunnions 4 of a roller 5 are received in the slot 3 and the stirrup straps 6 areconnected to the roller-5 whereby the stirrup is suspended in the usual manner.
In order that the trunnionse may be maintained in position in the slots 3. I have provided the latches 7. The latches are formed of a single piece of wire of suitable gage which has its intermediate portion `Specification of Letters Patent.l
Patented Dec. 2, 1919.
Application siedi/ray 22, 1919. serial No. 298,899.`
straight to form the guard 8 and this guard member extends across the space between the parallel arms 2 and terminates in side arms 9 which lie parallel with the arms 2. As shown to advantage in Fig. 1 each side ar 1n9 is normally spaced away from the stirrup and a coil spring 10 is interposed between each arm 9 and a stop member 11. An offset portion 12Vconnected to each arm 9 Vmaintains the arm 9 in the outwardly spaced position as shown in Fig. 1 and each portion 12 is provided with a loop 13 adapted to receive apivot member 14 whereby the tripping device will be pivotally mounted on the stirrup. rIhe locking hook 15 extends from the loop 111 and is adapted to pass over the corresponding trunnions 4 and the terminal of the hook is adapted to engage and disengage an eyelet 16 conveniently located on the upper end of the arm 2, as shown to advantage in Figs. 1 and 2 whereby bending or twisting of the hook will be prevented when a pressure is exerted on the stirrup. e
Cbviously the hook members when engaged in the position shown will maintain their engagement with the eyelets 16 and consequently the trunnions 4: will be maintained in position against displacement from the slots 3. The spring 10 acts to maintain the hooks in the position stated. When the operator desires to release the hooks it is merely necessary to actuate the guard member 8 whereupon the arms 9 will swing on the: pivot member and cause the hooks to disengage the eyelets 16, and permit the trunnions 4 to be dislodged from the slot 3.
The foregoing description and accompanying drawings have reference toV what might be considered to be the approved or preferred form of my invention. I desire it to be understood that I may make suoli changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Hai/'ing thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
A stirrup having parallel side arms each provided with a slot in the upper end, a roller having trunnions adapted to be received in the slots. eves secured to the side arms adjacent one edge of the slot. a guard member pivotally connected to the side arms, said guard member comprising a straight portion extending across the space between gaging the vertical portions of the guard the side arms, vertically extending portions for normally holding the hooks in the eyes. l0 extending parallel With the side arms and In testimonywhereof l-aflix my signature hooks formed on the ends of said vertical in presence of two Witnesses.
extending portions, said hooks adapted to ALBERT HOMER PORTER. extend over the trunnons of the rollers and Witnesses: Y Y having their ends recelved in the eyes, and EDWARD BLEASNER,
springs secured to the side arms and en- W. L. BROCK.
