Specification of Letters Patent.
Patenten nena, raie.
Application led June 3, 1919. Serial No. 301,452.
This invention relates to a Jacquard loom provided with reversible card feeding mechanism, and also todrop-box mechanism controlled by card perforations. i lt is essential that the indicationffor a drop-box change be made on the Vpick previous to the actual box movement. This indication is commonly made by a special set of'jacquard needles, controlled by special perforations in the pattern card, and thel indication for a box change is commonly made from the card preceding the card whichis to be in Voperative position whenV the change actually occurs. No difliculty is encountered with this arrangement so long as the card chain runs a single direction only, but whenthe chain is reversed, the boX change indications are found inthe card following that on which the change should occur, instead of inthe card precedingY theV change.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction by which the drop-box change may be correctly indicated with the pattern chain feeding either forward or backward. j v
W ith this general object in view, an important featurel of my. invention relates to the provision of two sets of boX change indil eating perforationsin the pattern card, together with devices coperating with one set when the chain is feeding forward, and with the other set when the chain is feeding backward. My invention further. consists in the provision of mechanism by which a change in the direction of card feed causes a corresponding change in the operation Vof said devices. j
In the preferred embodiment of'myinvention two sets of jacquard needles are provided, corresponding to the two sets of cardperforations, and one set of needles is operative during forward card movement,
^ and lthe second setduring backward 'card A movement.
My invention further consists in arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointedout in the appended claims. Y
A preferred form of my invention is shown in the drawings in which- Y Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a jacquard mechanism embodying my impiovement;
, Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of certai parts, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of a portion of a card chain.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows a jacquard frame 10 having the usual griff bars 11 vertically movable by lifting rods 12 and 13 alternately actuated by the driving mechanism (not shown). The usual pattern chain cylinder 14 is mounted Aon rods 15 by Awhich it is horizontally reciprocated. As it moves tothe left it operates through vthe jacquard-needles to move all of the uncalled hooks from the path of the ascendinggriff bars and as it moves to the right it is engaged by one of the feed pawls 16 or 17 and isrotated one quarter of afrevolution forward or backward as the case may be.
Y The pawls 16 and 17 are connected by a link 18 and the pawl 17 is extended to the left beyond its bearing and is connected by a link or cord 19 to a reversing lever 20. The reversing lever is controlled by a pattern chain 21 forming part 0f a lreversing mechanism which constitutes no part of my invention, and which is fully described iii prior United States Patent No. 578,068'. When a ball or raised link comes under the lever 20, rthe feed pawl 17 becomes operative,
and the feed pawl 16 becomes simultaneously inoperative.
The drop-boxes (not shown) are controlled by cords or links 22, angle-levers 23, and cords or links 24?: connected to jacquard hooks 25. Two sets of hooks are provided,
operati-ve position-.vis indicatedby a perforae ,tion 31 in the preceding` card. 29. When the chain is reversed and is running in theA direction ofthe arrow bin Fig, the. indication` for the same change comes from.'V the perforation 32 in the card 30 instead of from the perforation 3l in the card 29.
l Will n .v describe thearrangement .by
WhichA the ,perforation 3l becomes inoperaf tive, and 'the perforation 32 becomes operative upon the reversal ofcard feed.
The needles 26 and 27 previously described' are connectedv to arms 33 andl securedf' to` afshort shaft 35 orothervvise roatalfilymounted upona fixed axis. A third arm 361 issecuredto the shaft and. is con nected by -acord or link 37 to thereversing lever 20. Aifourth arm' 38 may be provided oir-the. shaft 35,. toi Whicha coiled spring 39 the position shoivn in Fig. l. A Theneedles-Q and 27. are prcvi'dedlcwith slots 4:0 permitting lost motion betweenV the is connected to-- vieldinglyf hold the shaft in Y needles andthe aims-33 and 34C, and areI also a provided with compression springs ellengagedffatf their left handV ends'V by: iixe'dfcross rods lL-2,.and at theirright hand ends enf gaging off-set portions of thelneedles;
The springsV il normally press'the needles Vyieltl-ingly` to the: right to. engage the pattern be moved to the left, withdrawing its hook from f thepath of the grill' bar. When a needle encounters a perforation inthe card, thelneedle remains in operative position and its hook is lifted bythe lgrilfbar to cause-'a box changeto be indicated. v Reference to `ll`ig. 3l will show Vthat th perfor-ations 3l andperforations A32 arepositiened` in different portions of the-.,card,
sothat a perforation'l can never cause indication by a needle 26 and a perforationfSQ canI never cause indication by -a needlefQ'. lAs the' lever arms anddn are controlled from the reVerSingleVerQO, a change int-he 4 position of the reversing lever will Withdraw one set-of needles from operative po.- sition and will simultaneously advance the secondsettooperative position. l am thus able to provide; operati-ve indicatiitgl perforations in the card preceding a drop-box change-,With the Apattern chain,7 moving in either direction, and such operative perforations become inoperative as soon as thedirection of pattern feed is reversed, other perforations then becoming operative.
I thus accomplish my desired result,
,ivill be evident that changes and Vmodifications canbe made therein by those skilled in the art Without departing from vthe spirit and scope; thereof-as set forth in the claims,
and l do not Wish to be otherwise limited to the details herein disclosed, but. what l, do, claims is z* Y `hln la loom, f thevcombination of ajacquaid mechanism includingV alplurality of patterncards, means to `feed said cardsin opposite f directions, .drop-boxY mechanism controlled from said cards, and means: to indicate alcertain lboit change upon a certain card ywhen feedingfin one direction, and upon a: :different card when feeding inthe opposite direction.
i12'. f-In alooin, in combinatioma jacquard mechanism including alplurality of pattern cards, vmeans to feed 'sa-'id cards: in opposite directions, drop-box .'meclianism, a Vset of needles ccmtrolling.- theboxl vchanges when the-'cards are fed-:in -one "direction, and another set of needles Acrmtrol-ling.v the box changes Whenthecards are fedinthe -opposite direction, said cards having a-vseparate set of perforations for each set of needles.
3. In a loom, in combination, fajacquard mechanism including a plurality of pattern cards, means to feed -saidf cards fr in opposite pattern chain `moving in directions, drop-box,nieohanism, Va l.set of needlesloontrolling the boX changes When the cards are fedVv in one direction, another set of needles controlling the boxchangesfwhen the C cards are fed in the opposite direction,
said cardshaving a separate setof perforation foreach-set oflneed-les, andn meansto render AVone setof needles Aoperative and" the other inoperative When the directionfof card Afeed' is reversed.
