Description

WITNESSES W. H. HAMMA-CK.
VIOLIN BREAST REST.
APPLICATION FILED OCT. 21. 1918.
Patented Dec. 2, 1919.
INVENTOR Wm mJLJZammcwIu A TTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. HAMMACK, 0F HAGERS'IOWN, MARYLAND.
VIOLIN BREAST-REST.
Application filed October 21, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Bevit known that 1, WILLIAM H. HAM- MACK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hagerstown, in the county of Washington and State of- Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Violin Breast-Rests, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in violin rests, consisting more particularly of a rest for supporting the violin on the breast of the performer.
An object of my invention is to provide a breast rest for violins, capable of being clamped at any desired place on the right bout of a violin, and including an adjustable padded rest piece for bearing on the breast of the performer, thus affording a support between it and the chin of the performer.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the breast rest in use, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the breast rest.
The breast rest comprises a stifl? wire stem 1 which is bent substantially as shown at 2 and threaded at the upper and lower ends as at 3 and 4:- A fixed clamp 5 is arranged to engage the bottom of the Violin V, and has a pad 6 to prevent scratching the varnish.
A movable clamp 7 near the extremity of the threaded end 8, is similarly padded at 8 for the same purpose. A nut 9 enables the tightening of the clamps 'so that the breast rest is secured on the right bout of the violin. A rest piece 10 is adjustable on the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2, 1919.

lower end of the stem 1 through the threaded mounting thereof on the threads d.
A padding 11 on the rest piece 10 makes a comfortable rest against the breast of the performer. It is to be observed that this device is in no sense a chin or shoulder rest of the type usually employed in connection with violins.
The breast rest is intended only to be applied to the right bout of the violin as shown in Fig. 1. By unloosening the nut 9, the rest may be moved around to any position desired. Similarly the cushion or rest piece 10 can be screwed up Or down to adjust the breast to various sizes of bodies.
I claim 1. A violin, comprising means enabling the violin to be supported in the playing position by the pressure of the chin thereagainst and without the aid of either hand, said means consisting of a member adjustable along the right bout of the violin, and a member carried thereby engaging the breast of the performer.
2. A breast rest for violins, comprising a stem provided with threaded extremities, a bottom clamp fixed near the base of the upper threaded extremity and provided with a pad, a loose clamp near the upper extremity, provided with a pad, means including a nut for binding the upper clamp to aflix the breast rest to the bout of the violin, and a padded cushion including a rest piece screwed on the lower threaded ex tremity and being capable of adjustment.
