rAsrnmndnnvrcn.
To all whom it'may 00mm; s I
"Be it known that I, HELEN W; B YN, a citizen of the'United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Fastening Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to pins and similar fastening devices used for wearing apparel, and its object is to provide a newand improved fastening device more especially designed for properly fastening the ends of shoulder straps toa womans undergarment without unduly displaying the fastening device or injuring the delicate materials, such .as ribbons and laces, of which the shoulder straps and portions of the garment are made. Another object is to permit of readily adjusting the shoulder straps relative to the garment to insure proper supporting of the garment on the wearers body. Another object is to hold the shoulder strap against wrinkling. Another object is to permit the user to readily place the fastening device in position on the garment or to remove it therefrom whenever it is desired to disconnect the shoulder strap from the garment. 7
lVith these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shownand described and then specifically pointed out in the claim.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanyingv drawings forming a part of this specification, in
which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a womans undergarment and shoulder straps fastened in place by the improved fastening devices;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged rear elevation of the same;
Fig. 1 is an enlarged front view of the fastening device; and
Fig. 5 is a crosssection of the same.
The fastening device is preferably made from a single piece of spring wire bent to form a head 10, from the ends of which extend integrally parallel side arms 11 and 12 between which extend shanks 13 and 14: connected by return bends 15 and 16 with the outer ends of the side arms 11 and 12. The
' lengths shanks Band-1a terminate in points 17 and 18 adapted to overlie recesses 19 and 20 formed in one face of the headlO. In practice, the headlO is flattened to permit'of readily formingthe recesses 19 and 20 in.
Specification of Lettersl atent. Patented Nov. 1919. Application fi1edApri12 2,1919. Serial no. 231,907. r 71' i 7 the said head for the reception of'the points j I 17 and 18 of thejshanks13 andll so that the points are practically concealed and do not form undesirable projections at the head end of the fastening device. The side arms 11 and 12 and the shanks 13- and 14 are approximately parallel and are spaced approximately equal distances apart, as plalnly indicated in the drawings.
- In using the fastening device, the shanks 13 and ltare slightly pressed outward to;
space the points 17 and 18 from the head 10 to allow of passing the point's'17 and 18 through the materials of the two parts 25 and 26 toloe fastened together. In practice, the points 17 and 18 are passed twice through the materials, as plainly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, that is, once near one edge of the part 25 and the second time adjacent the other edge of the said part so that only short portions of theshanks 13. and 11 are visible on the front of the part 26, that is, the undergarment, while the part 25 represents the shoulder strap, as indicated. in Fig.1. After the fastening device is engaged with the two parts 25 and 26 then the free end of the part 2.5 is looped back between the shank 13 and the side arm 11. By
the arrangement described the looping of the free end of the part 25 around the side arm 12and between the side arm 11 and the shank 13 provides an additional holding means for securly holding the part 25. in position. It will also be noticed that by the arrangement described the part 25,
which is usually a delicate ribbon, is not liable to wrinkle up, and the part 26, which is usually of a delicate fabric such as lace, is not liable to be torn owing to the double engagement of the two shanks 13 and 14: with the parts 25 and 26.
The fastening device is made of different and a fastening device is selected in which the distance between the head 10 roe and the return bends 15 and 16 correspond 7 approximately to the width of the part 25-. It is further understood that shoulder straps .25 are usually attached by stitches which f have to be removed whenever it is desired to displace a soiled or injured shoulder strap from. the garment.
Buttons and buttonholes have also been used for detachably connecting a shoulder strap with the garment but such connection is undesirable especially When the parts are of delicate fabrics. i
It Will also be noticed that by the arrangement described, the fastening device can be readily engaged Withithe part 25. at any point near its end thus providing means for adjustably fastening the shoulder strap to the garment to properly supportthe latter on the Wearers body.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent As an article of manufacture, a fastening device for fastening bands, ribbons and the like to a garment, made of a single piece of Wire bent to form a head flattened and having spaced point receiving recesses, parallel side arms extending integrally from the outer ends of the said head approximately at a right angle thereto, and shanks parallel to the said side arms and having integral return bends from the outer ends of the said side arms, the shanks extendingbe tween the at their ends in points engaging the said recesses, the said side. arms-and the said shanks extendingapproximately in the same plane.
