MEANS FOR TESTING STAYBOLTS FOR BOILERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 25, 1919.
Application filed February 8, 1918; Serial No. 216,018.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ETHAN I. DoDDs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Testing Staybolts for Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in means for testing staybolts for boilers,--one object of the invention being to provide simple and eilicient means which may be applied to staybolts while the same are in place in the steam boiler structure, for determining the integrity of the same.
- A further object is to provide testing means which may be employed for determining whether the tell-tale hole of a staybolt contains moisture and thereby ascertaining whether the bolt is whole or-fractured.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view; Fig. 2 is a rear end view of the testing device; Fig. 3 is a front end view; Fig. 4 is a view in side elevation, and Fig. 5 is a diagrammatical view showing the testing device connected with an exhaust pump and a stay bolt.
1, 2 represent the outer and inner sheets which may form a water leg of a steam boiler structure, said sheets being connected by flexible stav bolts, as is well understood. In the present instance, I have illustrated a stay bolt 3 which is threaded through the inner boiler sheet 2 and upset and at its outer end, a rounded head 4 is provided, said head having a bearing in a sleeve 5 threaded through the outer boiler sheet, and a cap 6 on said sleeve incloses the headed end of the bolt. The bolt 3 is also made with a tell-tale bore 7 which is accessible at its inner end for the application of my improved testing device and said tell-tale bore may be made to extend to and terminate within the headed end of thebolt.
My improved testing device comprises ashell or casing 8, to the outer peripheral edge of which a packing ring 9 of rubber or other suitable material isv secured, whereby the device may be caused to fit air-tight against the face of the inner boiler sheet 2, as shown in Fig. 1. An annular head 10 is secured to therear end of the casing 8 and made with a tubular extension 11 forming a nipple for the attachment ofa suitable vacuum pumpor a pipe leading to such pump, said tubular extension being caused to communicate with the chamber 12 formed by the shell or casing 8, throu h a port 13 in therear end of the latter.
The shell 8 is provided therein with a housing 14 (which may be cast integral therewith) for the accommodation of a nozzle 15,*the latter being made somewhat tapering at its free end to enter and closely fit the tapering inner end of the tell-tale bore 7 of the bolt. A spring 16 located within the housing 14 serves to press the free end'of the nozzle snugly into the tell-tale bore, said spring bearing at one end against the nozzle and at the other end against a nut 17 screwed'into the rear end of said housing. The nut 17 is made with a port 18 whereby the tube or nipple, 11 may communicate, through the housing 14, with the nozzle 15'and with the tell-tale bore of the bolt. The shell 8 is also provided therein with a passage 19 (the wall of which may be made integral with the shell 8 and housing 14) which communicates with the housing 14, and this passage receives a short pipe 20 which depends from the shell and carries an indicator cup 21 of glass or other transparent material.
In the operation of my improved testing means, the same is first applied to a bolt and boiler sheet as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The pump will then be operated in a manner to exhaust the air from the chamber 12 and the tell-tale bore of the bolt. The exhausting of the air from the chamber 12 of the shell will cause the latter to tightly hug (by suction) the boiler sheet 2 and the air will be exhausted from the tell-tale bore, through the nozzle. 15, housing 14 and port 18. If the bolt is fractured so that moisture in the form of water or condensed steam has entered the tell tale bore, the water will be withdrawn with the air by the action of the exhaust pump, and this water will pass through the nozzle 15 and gravitate from iio the housing 14 through the passage 19 and pipe 20 to the indicator cup 21. ,Thus it Will be seen that when the device'is operated as above described, thepresence-of Water in the cup 21 Will at once indicate the fact that the bolt is fractured. On the other hand, if no Water appearsin the cup 21, this fact will denote that the bolt is Whole. "Thusthe integrity of the bolt may be quickly, easily and accurately determined.
Various slight changes might be made inv the open end of the bolt and havingtineans for connection -Wltl1 suction means .and means carried by said device, ,and located out of the path of movementof the air Withdrawn from the boreof the stay bolt for collecting-any ater thatamayz be drawn from the said tell tale bore. 7 I
p '2. A st: ybolt testing device comprisinga portable suction device adapteduto be applied to the end of the-bolt, a nozz'lewithin said deviceadapted to comnnuiicate with the tell-tale hole in: the bolt, =and means-also carried by said device 'for-collectingany Water that maybe drawn outof the telltale bore.
3. A staybolt testing device, com-prisinga nozzle to communicate With the ;te1l-tale bore of .a stay bolt, .means iorv connecting air exhausting means with said mozzle,
Water which may escape-through said nozzle from the tell tale bore.
exhausting air from the chamber Within said shell and through said nozzle, means for segregating Water which may escape with the air fromithetellqtale bore, and indicating means for collecting such segregated Water. I
5. A stayboltt-testing devicecomprising a shell open atone ,end, packing .material on the peripheral edged the ,opengend \of said shell, means .for connecting {the chamber Within said. shell with air: exhausting, means, a nozzle carried by. said shell for connection with the. tell-tale bore, of a stay,;bolt, neans for connecting said nozzle .wvith the air eX- hausting means, an indicator ,contaiiner communicating ,With said nozzle to receive 6. Astayv bolt testing-device, comprising a shell having ,an .open endfor application to a boiler sheet, a housing avithinsaidshell, a springpressed nozzle carried, by said shell for application to the tell-tale bore of a stay bolt, a transparent cup disposed lnder ,and communicating with said .housing, and neans co -inecting said housing with ,air sexhausting means. v i
In testimony whereof, I have signedithi's specification in the vpresence of gtnzo subscribing Witnesses.
