Be it known that I, HEZEKIAH H. CRAW- Fono, a citizen of the Unitedl States, residing at El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of TeXas,-have invented-a new and useful Can-Qpener, of which the following is a specification.

The subject of this invention is a can opener intended for use in removing or cutting the closures or tops from cans or other sheet metal receptacles.

rl`he main object of the'invention is the provision of a can opener which may be attached to the can.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a detachable handle for the opener which may be used in removing the contents of the can.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a can opener struck from sheet metal.

The invention also contemplates generally improving the construction and enhancing the utility of can openers.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

A practical embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is la longitudinal sectional view of a can opener constructed in accordance with the invention, the can to which it is shown applied being partly in elevation and partly in section;

Fig. 4L is a plan view of the opener after the same has been struck from the sheet of material and before being bent into form;

1 the longitudinal edges 2 of which are bent backv upon itself to form channels to guide and receive the longitudinal edges of the handle, as will be described. A tongue 3 is struck from the material of the opener and is provided with an aperture 4, through which aperture is passed a loop of a wire 5 which encircles the can C near the top thereof. The tongue 3 is provided with a second aperture 6 which is preferably smaller than the first and suitably spaced therefrom. This aperture 6 is for the reception of a pin 7 which passes through the loop of the wire 5 and binds the opener and the wire together.

The metallic sheet 1 is formed at one end with a spur 1 which provides the cutting element or blade of the opener, and this spur 1 is bent to overlie the edge of the can, and in position to pierce the top of the can when the opener is lifted, as shown most clearly in dotted lines in Fig. 1.

The detachable handle has a handle portion 8, the longitudinal edges of which are adapted to slide within the channels formed by the edges 2 and the sheet 1, and a portion 9 integral with the handle portion and forming a spoon and fork for removing articles from the can. Perforations 10 are provided in the portion 9 so that the liquid in the can may drain from the articles when the same are being removed.

In order to detaehably secure the handle in place, a depression 11 is punched in the sheet 1 in position to register with a depression 12 punched in the handle portion 8.

l/Vhile a special form of connection between the handle and the wire C has been shown and described, it is to be understood that any suitable and convenient form of connection between these parts may be had without departing from the spirit of the invention. It is also to be understood that the exact form of detachable portion of the handle, or spoon, is not material to the invention, and that the form thereof may be varied in structural details.

In practice, the openers may be secured to the cans and form a permanent part thereof. When it is desired to open a can, the opener is lifted to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, bending the tongue 3 and causing the spur 1 to pierce the top of the can. The opener may then be revolved about the can, the wire 5 holding it firmly against the outer-wall of the can during such revolution. Revolving the opener about the can will, of course, cause the spur 1 to cut the material forming the top of the can.r

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and sought by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination with a channeled member and an offset bendable tongue integral therewith, and means for attaching said tongue to a can, of a laterally extending perforating and cutting member integral with the channeled member and a handle eX- tending from said channeled member.

2. A can opener including a longitudinally channeled member having an oiset tongue, means straddling the tongue for binding it to a can, a combined perforating and cutting member extending laterally from one end of said channeled member and a handle detachably mounted within and extending beyond one .end of the channeled member, the tongue being bendable by the tilting of the channeledmember'and the insertion of the perforating member into the end of a canto which the member is attached.
