Be it known that we, 'WILLIAM DAYTON Freeman and lVAnnE-n E. Gnasi nY, citizens of the United States, and residents of 5 liridgeton, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Vial-Bottoming Machines, of which the following is a spewification.
Our invention relates to the manufacture ofsmall glass bottles or, as they are termed in the trade, vials. As is well known, these bottles or vials are-made from previously formed glass tubes which are out into sections of the proper. length, which sections are subsequently acted upon by suitable means. including the heating of the glass, for the purpose of for:ningth'e--nec essa-ry necks, and also to provide or form -the bottoms.
The general practice heretofore has been to perform these operations by hand;, uitable means being provided in the shape of jet flames to heat the ends of the tubes to an extent sufiicient to soften the glass 5 whereby thenecks and mouthspand bottoms could he formed.
This present invention relates to a machine adapted to perform aui omatically the operation of botton'ii'n'gtubes of glass which have had the neck and mouth viously formed therein. \Vhile the present machine has been portions prepccially designed for 'the purpose of bot-' toming tubular sections comprising a double blank having the month and neck portions.
at each'cnd. and which are prepared or produced by the use of a machine forming the subject of a companion. application. filed Nov. 23. 1914. Serial X0. 873,610. it will be understood that the present machine is capable of operating upon previously forn'iod double blank tubular sections. no matter how the same have been produced, and irrespoctivc of any month and neck portions possessed by such sections. inasmuch as there are many vials on the market which do not: possess the finished neck and mouth, but are of the same diameter throughout.
These and other features of our invention are more fully described hereinafter, refcreucc being bad t the accompanying drawiugs. in which:

This shaft maybe driven by a. pulley 5 to which motion is imparted in any suitable manner. and splined 0 to said shaft 4 is an adjustable friction pinion 6 whereby motion of said shaft may be imparted to a friction disk 7, mounted on the end of'a short shaft 8 journaled in a. suitable bearing 9. To effect adjustment of the friction pinion on the shaft 4, in Order to effect changes in the speed of motion transmitted. a. screw shaft 10 may he arranged parallel to said shaft 4 and provided with a nut 11 having a yoke arm 12 for operative engagement with a. hub 13 carried by thefriction pinion 6.
Keyed to the shaft 8 is a pinion 14 which moves therewith when the friction disk is driven. and this pinion meshes with and drives a gear 15 mounted on the end of a cohntcr-shaft 11; extending tle length of the nun-lune and journalcd in suitable bearings 17. This counter-shaft- 16 carries pinions 18 and 19 for a purpose to be described. laralleling the counter-shaft 16 is a secondcounter-shaft 20 journaled in suitable bearings 20 and having a pinion 21 meshing with the pinion 18 of the counter-shaft 16 whereby shaft 20 may be driven. The shaft 10:: 2-0 carries bevel pinions 22 and 23 at its instances ished vials which fall onto runway pro vided by a series of curved plates 98, from which they pass to inclined rails 98 for dis charge from the lniachine.
After the tubular sections oi glass have been positioned by the several rollers (33, 63, so far as horizontal alincment is concerned, they are to be centered with respect to the disks 6'? and 68. The stems 6'2" and 68 carrying said disks are mounted in bearings 67 and 68 carried by the slidable brackets 87 and. 88 which are under the control of the cams 26 and 27 the latter being grooved at 26 and 27 for the reception of rollers Q15 and 27', carried b 100 slidably mounted in suita le guideways 99 and 100 on the under side of the supplemental table 1 These bars are slotted for the passage of the cam shafts 24 and 25 and extend beyond the ends of said supplemental table 1 being connected at their outer ends to bars 101 and 102 operatively mounted on top of said table 1 by means of studs 103 and 104; said bars 101 and 102 being connected at 101 and 102 to the bottom portions 01" the sliding members 87 and 88.
The bars 99 and 100 carry the rollers 21$ and 27 adapted to the cam grooves 26 and 27* of the earns 26 and 27, and upon rotation of said earns the sliding menil 87 and 88 are reeiprocated and with them everal rollers 63, 63, 64 and 64-, and the upper ruin her-faced rollers and 66; the said slidable members 87 and 88 having arms 105 and 106 With hubs 105 and 106 slidable on the shaft 50, and between said hubs 105 and 1.06 the hubs 76" and 7'7 of the bell-crank levers 76 and 77 are mounted so as to be movable by the hubs 105 and 106". As the blanks are only in frictional engagement with the several rollers, the surfaces of said ruliber-taeed rollers are beveled so that the rotative move-- ment of the same during their outward niovement Will effect proper relative movement of the ends of the blank as the center of the same is softened by heat.
In order that the blanks which are designed o form two bottles or vials may be separated into two sections, the central or mid portion of the same must be heated so as to soften the glass, and during this heal ing operation the slidable inembsn's. 87 and 88 are moved outward so as to cause said central portion of the tubular sections to collapse under the heating action. This movement is effected by the cams 26 and .27 with the aid of the n'i'cchanism described. and in order to elicct the desired heating, jets oi flame are directed against the central portioi'i of said sections from a series of burners l in, 111 and 112. Following; this action the elongated ends of the separate sections which are substain tially conical in shape require to be flattened to form the desired bottoms of the respective rials.
