lie it known that we, TIIADDEUS F. BAILY and FRANK T. Corn, citizens of the United States, both residing at Alliance in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful PhaseDisti-ihution System, of which the following is specification.
This invention relates to phase distribution systems, the object being to employ all three phases of a three phase supply line in the operation of electric furnaces of the resistance type.
With this objectjn view the invention consists in the novel construction and ar rangement of parts, hereiimlter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that; various changes in the term, proportions, size and minordetails of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claim, without departing'trom the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the in vention.

Various systems have been discovered and are now employed by which electric turna ces of'the resistance type/designed to employ single phase current can be ()pGlItttQd upon a. three phase supply line. 'ihe means by which the result is accomplished is generally to connect oneor two of the phases to the resistor elements within a furnace and the remaining phase or phases to some other piece of apparatus to be operated, in the event that the remaining phase cannot be employed. the two phases which are ing employed will naturally unbalance line which is obviously an undesirable thing to do.
in order to be able to employ all three phases of a three phase supply line in the operation of an electric furnace, We employ the system herewith shown in which an elec tric furnace is indicated at l and resistance elements at 2 and 3. Electrodes 4i, 5 and 6 enter the resistance element '2 and similar electrodes 7, 8 and 9 enter the resistance elements 3. The electrode 6 in the element 2 is exactly twice the distance from the electrode 5 as the electrode 5 is from the electrode 'lhis is true also of theelectrodes in the resistance element 3, 8 and 9 being exactly twice the distance apart as the electrodes 7 and 8 and since electrodes 4, G, 7 and 9 are in the extreme ends of their respective elements electrodes 5 and 8 are positioned exactly one-third of the distance from one end and two-thirds of the distance "from the opposite ends of their respective this line runs a lead st) to the electrode 5. By this arrangement it is seen that all three of the phases are equally used, the resistance elements being connected in series through the medium ot the line 10, which joins the electrodes 4 and 7 thus making the resistance elements virtually one continuous element, and by the arrangement of the electrodes 5, (a S and 9, the tot-a length of the two resistance elements is divided into thirds. 1
in the type of furnace employing a continuous circular resistance element such as is shown at 30 in 2, the electrodes 31, 32 and 33 are each spaced exactly one-third the length ot the element, leads from three phase relation and operate with pri-fli mary coils from the line 35 to which the" three phase supp line 36 is connected.

From the foregoing it will be obvious that all three phases of a three phase supply line can be used to successfully operate in one furnace a single straight resistance element, two resistance elements, or a plurality, or a continuous resistor Without unbalancing the line and without the necessity of connecting "another piece of apparatus to maintain the balance upon the line.
Having fully described our invention What we claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors Patent, is:
In an electric furnace of the resistance type, a pair of resistance elements within said furnace, an electrode located at each end of each resistance element, the electrodes at adjacent ends of one element bek vWe: connected together, an electrode in each "resistance element spaced twothrrds of the distance from one end of the resistance element and one-third of the distance from the other end, a three phase supply line, primary coils of three transformers located in a line connected to the three phase supply line, secondary coils of said transformers located in a second line and connected to the intermediate electrodes of the two resistance,
elements and to the electrodes spaced the farthest from the intermediate electrodes.
