Description

l. S. JENSON.
GATE.
APPLICATION HLED JULY 8. 1919.
1,322,190. I Patented Nov. 18, 1919.
um/whoa J05: im/T Jerwam,
rein srnans JOSEPH S. JENSON, OF HORSE, TEXAS.
GATE.
Application filed July 8, 1919.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEri-r S. JENsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Norse, in the county of Bosque and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gates.
'An important object of the invention is to provide a gat which is operated for opening and closing the same, in a positive manner, by pull elements arranged upon opposite sides thereof, the closing movement of the gate not being dependent upon the action of gravity upon the gate, whereby such gate may be constructed light, which will in turn enable the gate to be operated easily and prolong the life of the same.
In accordance with my invention I provide a gate element which is pivotally connected with the post to swing horizontally, and a pivoted lever arranged to first slightly elevate the free end of the gate, to release the latch, the lever then being free to swing the gate to the open position. The gate is locked in the open position, and to close the same the lever initially slightly elevates th free end of the gate, then lowers the same and swings the gate to the closed position. The opening and closing movement of the gate element are both eflected by the movement of the lever.
I11 the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the. same,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gate embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a latch device, and,
Fi 3 is a plan view of a hinge or pivot for the gate.
In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates a gate element, as a whole, which may be constructed of longitudinal beams 6, connected at their ends with vertical beams 7 The gate element may further comprise diagonal beams 8 and horizontal strips 9.
Arranged near one end of the gate element 5 is a post 10, having a hinge element Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 18, 1919.
Serial No. 309,266.
lever 14 is provided with a strap 15, rigidly secured thereto inwardly of the pivot 13, and this strap has an elongated opening 16,
receiving a vertical bolt 1'7, which is rigidly attached to the top of the beam 7. The elongated opening 16 permits of the gate being swung slightly vertically, as well as horizontally. A flexible element or chain 18 is secured to the inner end of the lever 14c and to the upper beam 6, at a point near its center.
The lever 14 is swung in opposite directions by a cable or flexible element 19, secured to the outer end thereof and the op- .posite ends of this flexible pull element are passed through guides 20 attached to horizontal bars 21, secured to posts 22, arranged upon opposite sides of the gate element.
Disposed near the opposite end of the gate element 5, when in the closed position, is a latch device, embodying a supporting strip 23, rigidly secured to the post 24. The upper end of this strip is ofl'set and spaced horizontal strips 25 are rigidly secured thereto. Latches 26 are arranged between the strips 25, and are pivoted thereto at 26, these latches being adapted to contact with a U-shaped stop 27, rigidly secured to the support strip 23. The latches 26 are arranged beneath an inverted V-shaped stop 28, rigidly secured to the post 24:. A horizontal keeper or bolt 29 is rigidly secured to the free end of the gate element, and is adapted to contact with the upper ends of the latches 26, swinging the same inwardly, whereby the keeper will be held within and between these latches.
The numeral 30 designates posts arranged near the posts 22, and each post 30 carries a horizontal strip 31 to which is pivoted a latch 32, extending above the same and Provided at its lower end with a lateral exten sion 33, arranged to contact with the post.
The operation of the gate is as follows:
When the gate element is closed, the operator pulls either end of the flexible element 19, which tends to swing the lever 1st horizontally, as the gate element is now locked in the closed position. This movement of the lever 14 pulls upon the chain 18, which in turn will elevate the free end of the gate element 5, sufficiently, whereby the keeper 29 may pass over the upper end of either latch 26. Further swinging movement of the lever 14 will swing the gate element 5 to the open position and it will be locked in this open position by the keeper 29, engaging behind the latch 32. To close the gate, the opposite end of the flexible element 19 is pulled, to elevate the free end of the gate element, so that the keeper will clear the latch element 32, the gate element being then closed by a continued pulling upon the element 19.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described, is to be taken as a preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape,
size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention, or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A gate element provided at one end with a substantially vertical beam, a substantially vertical post arranged near the beam, a hinge connecting the lower end of the beam and the lower portion of the post and adapted to allow the gate element to swing horizontally and to partake of slight vertical swinging movements, a substantially horizontal operating lever ipivotally connected with the upper end of the post, a strap secured to one end portion of the lever and forming an elongated socket, a pivot element secured to the upper end of the beam and pivotally mounted within the elongated socket and adapted to slide longitudinally therein, and a flexible non-extensible element secured to the inner end of the lever and connected with the gate element inwardly of the pivot element, and means to move the lever.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
