Be it known that I, FRANK T. Dickson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification. l

This invention relates to toys, and more particularly to wheeled toys.

The object of the invention is to provide a wheel toy with a figure which is rocked back and forth from the hips as the'toy is j run along the ground.

Another object is to provide a toy of this character which is extremely simple in construction, and made in the shape of a row boat with an oarsman therein, connectedy to operating means actuated by the support ing wheels, whereby in the backward and forward movements of the device, a rowing motion will be imparted to the figure.

Another object is to so construct such a toy that the figure constituting a part thereof may be easily connected and disconnected from its operating mechanism.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the com bination and arrangement of parts and in the details of. construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood.

The figure 8 which may be of the grotesque form illustrated, or of any other form, has

. the lower end of' its body pivotally mounted on a pintle 9 mounted in the end walls of 'faces of the body 8 and pivoted at their ends on the pintle 9 and are provided at their lower ends with feet 10a which normally rest loosely on the bottom of the boat body, as shown clearly` in Figs. 1 and 3. These legs 10 as illustrated, are positioned at the ends of the recess 5, whereby the body 8 is centralized to adapt it to move back ward into the recess extension 6 when rocked.

Arms 11 are pivotally mounted at one end on pins 12 which project laterally from the shoulders of the body 8, and the free ends of these arms, which are preferably shaped to represent clenched hands, are loosely engaged with crank axles 13 and 14: which support the wheels 2, the free inner ends of said aXles being spaced a suficient distance apart to permit them toclear each other when rotated, and when it is desired to disengage the arms of the figure therefrom, one of said axles is turned out of alinement with the other, and the arms slipped off said axle, sufficient play being provided at the shoulders to permit this.

When the iigure 8 is connected with the axles 13 and 14 as shown in the accompanying drawing, and the toy is moved forward or backwardover a supporting surface, the crank axles 13 and 14 will, through the arms 11 impart a rocking motion to the body 3. of the figure from the hip line, where it is pivot-ed on the pintle 9. This rocking motion simulates the motion of an oarsman and will be found very amusing to children.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,

lthe advantages of the construction and of the method of operation wili be readily ap parent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while l have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which l now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, l desire to haveit understood that lill , the device shown -is-merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are Within the scope 'of the claimed invention.

A toy of the class described comprising a vehicle" body having a barv extending transversely thereof and provided with a recess in its rear edge, a centrally disposed extension in said recess, the real: Wall of said eX- tension being beveled, a pmtle mounted in said recess, a figure having the lower end of its body pivotally mounted on` said pntle to permit the figure when rocked to move backward into the extension of said recess, legs pivoted at one end on said pintle on opposite sides of the body of said figure and at the ends of said recess to centralize the body of the figure and adapt it, to move backward into the recess extension, and means for actuating said figure.
