Description

uNiTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORVILLE M. DONALDSON, OF DETROIT, MICI-VIGA, SSIG-NOR OF ONE-HALF TO JAMES W'. WAYMAN, OF HIGHLAND PARK, MICHIGAN.
VAPOREZER.
Specification ci Letters ratent. Patented Nov. 11, 1919.
Application filed Gctober', 1.917. SerialvNo. 199,422.
Y To all ibwm t may concern Be it known that RVILLE M. Donny)- son7 a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, vin the county of Wayne, State ot Michigan, :have invented a new and useful Improvement in Vaporizers7 of .which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to electrical heat-- ers for insertion much like a gasket in the line between the carbureter and the intake valve of an internal combustion engine. The heater is ordinarily bolted between the carbureter and the manifold.
The invention has for its object a heater has the usual bolt holes al, ci and the center opening for the gases. In this center opening is located a Aspiral of ribbon nickelL chromium wire c. This furnishes the electrical heating` element which is connected at its outside end with the single insulated binding post f and at its inner end is grounded by being in contact with the conducting cross pin g. `This cross pin. g not only serves to ground the heating element and thus do away with an eXtra binding post but it also serves the 4function of supporting the coil in its proper relation to the gasket-like body and the passage therethrough. This is effected by utilizing the pair of insulating tubes or sleeves It around the pin g and a plurality of tubular spacers e' about this insulating sleeve t. These spacers serve to properly space the convolutions of the spiral heating element while the "space between the two insulating sleeves 7L at the center of the pin gserves to allow the inner end of the heating element to come into contact and be held in contact with the cross pin g so asvto complete the'return circuit. By tightening the nuts on the ends 'of the conducting pin .g the spacers' are packed and pinch'the lconvolutions of the zagged supporting b'ar lc with a pairV of insuiating tubes Z of fiat elliptical cross section.
rllhe convolutions of the spiral `heating eley nient are alternately passedabove and below this supporting element 'and thezig-zag portion of the supporting element serves to give a spacing arrangement by reason of the tendency of the conv'olutions toi-each the bottoni of the V-like portions that theyoccup y. The inner end of the heating element is attached to the exposed center portion ofl the -supporting element so as to complete the return through the body of the gasket, car-v bureter, etc., to the battery, (not shown).
.lVhat l claim is:
l. ln a vaporizer for the purpose specified, a metal gasket-likebody provided with a central opening, a spiral heating element contained inthe central opening, and a suitably insulated cross pin for supporting the spiral heating element and to which the l inner end of the spiral is connected` to ground the same. A
2. In a vaporizing device for the purpose specified, the combination ofra metal gasketlike body provided with a central opening, a spiral heating element, an insulatedbinding post passing through the body to which one .end of the spiral heating element'is connected, and a cross pm serving both to sup port the convolutions of the spiral heating element and ground the other end of said element. i
3. In a vaporizing device for lthe purpose specified, a metal gasket-like body provided with a central opening, an insulated bindingpost pa seing through the body, aheating element connected at onefend of the binding post and disposed inthe central opening in the forni of a spiral, and a Cross pin having insulating means thereon-"to space the'convolutions of the spiral heating element and serving both `to support the heating element and to act as a continuation of the circuit through the heating element.
4. lin a vaporizingl device4 for the'purpose/ speciiied, the combination of a metal body provided with a central opening, an insu' Il ated binding post passingithrougli the body,l
