UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
STA'NISLAW BETLEY, OF PHILADELI PHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPITTOON- CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV, 11, 1919.
Application filed May 31, 1919; Serial No. 300,999.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANISLAW BETLEY, a citizen of Poland, having declared my intention to become a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Phlladelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n spittoon-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of the invention 1s the provision of a cleaner for spittoons and similar devices readily operable in a sanitary manner without touching the article worked upon by the hands, the brushing and scrubbing being easily and quickly accomplished.
A further, object of the invention is the provision of a cleaner adapted for holding the article during the cleaning operation in a position to be operated upon by revolving brushing and scrubbing means, the structure possessing great strength and durability.
With these general objects in view, the invention consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and in which like reference characters designate similar parts through the several views.
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the invention illustrating the operation of cleaning a spittoon wlth the latter partially broken away and the holding means indicated by dotted lines released from the work,
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof with parts broken away,
Fig. 3 is a central sectional view of a portion of the invention upon an enlarged scale and broken away,
Fig. 4 is an enlarged elevational view of substantially the same portion of the invention shown in Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view taken upon line VV of Fig. 3, and
Figs. 6 and 7 are transverse sectional views taken on lines VIVI and VIIVII respectively of Fig. 4.
My invention comprises a combined article holder and cleaner, being especially adapted for work upon spittoons, an ordinary form of which is illustrated at 10 in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. A tube 11 has a head 12 at one end with curved arms 13 hinged to opposite side portions 14 thereof while jaws 15 are hinged as at 16 to the free ends of the arms 13, the said jaws having arcuate ends 17 for engaging the spittoon 10.
A sliding collar 18 upon the tube 11 is operatively connected with ears 19 of the arms 13 by links 20, it -being apparent that the sliding of the collar 18 longitudinally of the tube 11 pivotally moves the arms 13 for engaging and disengaging the jaws 15 in relation to the work. A handle 21 slidable upon the tube 11 is connected by side bars 22 with the collar 18 for convenience in moving said collar for operating the arms and jaws. A retaining dog 23 pivoted tothe handle 21 and having an operating lever 24 is adapted to engage the adjacent toothed portion 25 of the tube 11 at will and whereby the handle 21 may be readily retained at any position upon said toothed portion 25 and at which times the arms 13 may be positioned outstretched with the jaws 15 separated to the desired extent ready for engaging the spittoon 10 when engaged be tween the jaws 15 upon releasing the dog 23, permitting the handle 21, collar 18 and arms 13 to lower by reason of their own weight.
A shaft 26 is journaled through the tube 11 with a suitable scrubbing brush or mop .27 secured in a socket 28 by means 'of a clamp 29 capable of revolving as well as longitudinal movement in a plane between the jaws 15. A crank 30 upon the opposite outer end of the shaft 26 has a handle 31 whereby the brush 27 may be revolved in the spittoon 10 when the latter is held be tween the jaws 15 locked in position by the dog 23, the scrubbing operation being readily accomplished by the handle 30 not only in revolving the mop 27 but also in longitudinally moving the shaft 26 for inserting,
and withdrawing the mop over the spittoon 10 at will. The hinging of the jaws 15 to the arms 13 as at 16 permits a lateral rocking movement of the tube 11 when the jaws are attached to the spittoon 10, thereby permitting the mop 27 to be laterally shifted as found desirable. The complete operation of the invention will be fully understood from the foregoing description, it being seen that when the scrubbing operation is completed, a loop 32 upon the shaft 26 adjacent the socket 28 is adapted for positioning upon a hook 33 carried by the head 12. While the form of the invention herein set forth is believed to be the preferable embodiment, it will be understood that minor changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
WVhat I claim as new is 1. A spittoon cleaner comprising a tube, longitudinal and lateral swinging jaws carried by the tube adapted for engaging the work, adjustment retaining means for said jaws and a scrubber journaled in said tube adapted for operation between said aws.
2. A spittoon cleaner comprising a tube, longitudinal and lateral swinging jaws carried by the tube adapted for engaging the work, adjustment retaining means for said jaws slidable on said tube, a shaft slidably journaled through said tube, a mop attached to one end thereof adapted for operation upon the work held by the jaws and operating means for the mop at the opposite end of the shaft outwardly of the tube.
3. A spittoon cleaner comprising a tube, longitudinal and lateral swinging jaws carried by the tube adapted for engaging the work, adjustment retaining means for said jaws, a shaft slidably iournaled through said tube, a mop attached to one end thereof adapted for operation upon the work held by the jaws, operating means for the mop at the opposite end of the shaft outwardly of the tube, a loop upon the shaft adjacent the mop and a hook upon the tube adapted for receiving said loop with the mop in its retracted inoperative position.
4. A spittoon holder comprising a tube having a toothedside portion, a head at one end of the tube, curved arms hinged to said head, laterally swinging aws pivoted to the free end of said arms having arcuate ends adapted for engagmgthe work, a collar slidable upon the tube, operating links piv- 5. A spittoon holder comprising a tube having a toothed side portion, a head at one end of the tube, curved arms hinged to said head, laterally swinging jaws pivoted to the free end of said arms having arcuate ends adapted for engaging the work, a collar slidable upon the tube, operating links pivotally connected between the collar and arms, a handle member slidable upon the tube adj acent said toothed portion, side rods con nected between said handle and collar, adjustment retaining means for the jaws pivoted to said handle adapted for engaging the toothed portion of the tube when the jaws are adjusted, a slidable shaft journaled through said tube, a crank upon the outer end of said shaft, a socket upon the inner end of the shaft adapted for movement between said aws and arms, a mop secured in said socket, a hook carried by said head and a loop upon the socket adapted for receiving said hook when the mop is in its retracted inoperative position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
STANISLAWV BETLEY.
