MOLD FOR USE IN BUILDING WALLS.
vSpecification'of Letters Patent. I, Patented NOV. 4, 1919.
Application filed February 12, 1917. Serial No. 147,999.'
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that `I,`HEINR1CH V; P. NIEL- SEN, a citizen of the' United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain'ne'w and useful Improvements in Molds for Use in. Building Walls, y.of which* the following is a specification.
My inventionrelates to the art of constructing walls from (plastic material, `particularly cement-walls, vand it hasl for )its object to ymake it possible to' erect 'a wall of Vthe character described lwith?'accuracy and despatch and to provide simple and `eliicient means for use 'in'constructing the same.-
To thesel ends'my invention consists; first,
lof the improved means for use in' constructing walls Vfrom cement and thel like vand second, in 'the novellmethodemployed -in constructing a wailf this kind in accordancewith myv invention,-all asset 'forth in the following description and particularly pointed yout and defined in the claims at the close thereof. i
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a par'.
tially constructed wall showing my new api paratus applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a' section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4: is a perspective view of one of the transverse ties hereinafter described.
Having reference to the drawings W, l/V represent the upper portion of a partially built cement wall having an air space 'w between the two sections IV lV of the wall. Incorporated in each section W of the wall is a plurality of upright reinforcing rods or bars fw arranged in pairs and a plurality of ties we through each of which extend two of the rods Aw.
The wall is built in courses with the aid of one or more molds each comprising essentially two outside walls 1 and 1a each of which is provided at its top edge with dowels or studs 3 and at its bottom edge with a corresponding number of dowels or studs 4 each arranfred immediately below one of the dowels 3. Fliese dowels 3 and L1 are preferably the ends of flat metal bars fastened by screws or otherwise to the inner sides of the walls 1 and 1a.
In starting to build a wall the two walls 1 and l of the mold are placed on edge upon thel ground with a tie wz applied to each 'pairfof dowels or studs 4 at the bottom of the mold, said ties, resting on the ground.
Each tie tu2 is provided near each end with a hole or perforation 'w3 to receive the dowels or studs i and, between said holes w3, with t,wo other h'olesw4L each adapted to receive an upright reinforce rod ws. After the dowels or studsA 4 have been engaged with 'ithe several ties'w2 that are placed under the Vwalls v1 and -1a a corresponding number of ties 'wz' are -slipped' down over the upright rein-force rods'fw and'lowered thereon until vthey are engaged'with the dowels or studs 3 *at the upperfedgesof the sidewalls 1 and "ll It will thusv be vclear that the ties (wz serve as, rigid connections'between the top edges 'fof the"sid'e.;"wal1, sV 1 and 1 and the bottom edges thereof. In order, however, to prevent jsidewise"displacement or movement of the sidewalls land lfand hold them rigidly upright, each oflsaid walls is provided upon itsl outerside with two pairs of straps 6,Y one pair near-each' end, and each pair adapted to receive a post which may be made from wood.
" When the irst or bottom course of the wall is being cast the posts 7 may be driven into `the ground but on the other courses wedges 8 will be driven into position be tween the lower ends of said posts and the course to the top of which the mold is applied. lVith the posts 7 properly in position the side walls 1 and 1a of the mold and the reinforce bars w are held in proper upright positions.
The mold herein shown is adapted to produce a wall comprising the two sections IV and IV separated by the air space to and for this reason it is made to include a partition 9 provided at its top edge with dowels or studs 10 spaced the same as the dowels 3, and at its bottom edge with dowels or studs 11 spaced the same as the dowels 1i. Also each tie lw2 is made at its middle with a third dowel perforation w3, the middle perforations w3 of the ties under the mold receiving the dowels 11 and the middle perforations w3 of the ties w2 on top of the mold receiving the dowels 10.
The ends of the mold are closed by end walls l2 each provided at its upper and lower ends with dowels 13 engaging ties to2 above and below the side walls and partition of the mold.
lifted arey lowered into freshly cast wall and are `ater used to re- -on' thereinforoerods Vw far enou h to disengage them from thedowels at zt e 'top of the mold and then the parts of the latter are removed, after |which the ties that were osition 011- the ceive Ithe dowels 4 and 11 of the mold when the latter is 17e-assembled on the wall t0 cast the next course above.
:It will thus' be seen that the important feature of my mold is that its parts are held in proper relative position by the ties-wz,
that the mold holds the topmost set of ties in the positions they are vto occupy 11 the wall andthat these mold holding ties become incorporated in the'wall-fand serve .as transverse binders and reinforcin members, as well as a .means for coupling ,t e` lower. .edges of the walls ofthe mold to the top of tthe wall being constructed. v
The perforated ends of the ties w2 being near the exterior of the `wall under construction are accessible so that they can bensed as -anchorages for supporting a staging if desired.
My improved mold is 4of lsimple and inexpensive iconstruction and by its aid unskilled Copies of this patent may be obtained for workmen-can rapidly erect a wall of cement or the like.
In the, accompanying drawings I have shown my improved mold as angular in shape so as to be used in casting the portions of the two walls adjacent .a c'orner at which they meet but, obviously the mold may be made of :any desired shape.
What I elaim is:
l. A molding outfit of the character described comprising a single pair of vertical side-wall members; two sets of ties, one set lfor connectin the upper portions of said side wall mem ers and the other set for connecting the lower portions of said side wall members, and Studs on said side wall mem- -bers immediately adjacent the upper and lower edges thereof for separably engaging with the ends of said ties.
2. A moldingoutfit of the character described comprising a Isingle pair of yvertical side Wall membeisytwo sets of ties, one set for connection rthe iupper portions of said vside :Wall lmem ers and ythe other set'for connecting thelower portions of said side wall members; studs on said side wall members immediately .adjacent the upper and lower edges thereof yfor separably engaging with the ends of said ties, land end Walls for closin the ends of them'old.
v n...testimony whereof I have afxed my signature. ,v
