To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, YVVILLIAM H. N 1T1, a citizen of the United States, residing at Petersburg, in the county of Dinwiddie and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Box Holders and Lid-Clamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to devices for lifting and handling articles and more particularly to devices adapted to be applied to cigar boxes whereby they may be easily handled.

The general object of the invention is to provide a very simple combined clamp and handle adapted to be disposed on opened cigar boxes to hold the lid in an opened posi tion and at the same time aiford a handle whereby the cigar box may be lifted out of the show-case and presented to the customer purchasing cigars.

A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is very simple in construction and formed of a sin gle length of wire.

Other objects will appear in the course of the following description.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure lis a vertical sectional view of a cigar box withone form of my holder applied thereto;

Referring to these drawings, and particularly Figs. 1 and 2, it will be seen that thls form of my device is composed of a single length of wire bent to provide a straight portion 10, which at its upper end is angularly bent as at 11, then extended downward in spaced relation to the portion 10 and bent into a single coil 12. thewireafter it forms the coil 14: is laterally bent as at 15 and formed into a horizontally elongated loop 16.

It will beseen that this device provides a spring clip formed by the portions 13 and 10, these two legs being spaced from each other so that they may embrace a cigar box and particularly embrace the back of the cigar box A and the lid B when the latter is turned downward. The loops 12 and 14 form two eyes through which two fingersot' the hand may be passed so as to provide a handle for the cigar box whereby it may be easily lifted out of the show-case or disposed therein. 'By clamping the lid B in a vertical position against the back of the cigar box, the cigar box when it is disposed in the showcase is placed in an angular position so that the contents are fully displayed.

In Figs. 4 and5 I show another modification of my device wherein the wire is bent to form the leg 17, then angularly and outwardly directed as at 18, then bent to form a coil 19, then the wire is extended downward and toward the point of the leg 17, as at 20. then bent to form a coil 21 and thenv bent to form a flat annular portion 22 which engages against the lid B of the cigar box A so that the holder will have a full bearing with the cigar box and be prevented from lateral rocking movement. It will be seen that this is also the function of the elongated loop 16.

In Figs. 6 and 7 I show still another form wherein the wire is formed to provide the leg 23, then is angularly bent as at 24:, then downwardly and outwardly extended to form a handle loop 25, then downwardly extended as at 26, then rebent upward on itself as at 27, and then laterally bent'and downwardly bent as at 28 over the angular portion between the bend 24: and the loop 25. In this case the elongated loop formed by the members 26 and 27 has sufficient width to provide a bearing against the back of the cigar box which will prevent lateral rocking movement of the handle.

It will be seen that any one of these provides an efiicient handle for a cigar box or box of like character and that the legs between which the cigar box and the back thereof are clamped'are sufiiciently resilient to permit the clip or handle to be readily put in place and yet. sufliciently strong to hold coil and adapted to bear 1. A holder of the character described made of a single length of wire, the wire being bent to provide two parallel portions adapted to clamp a cigar lid between them, a coil forming a handle, and a portion extending transversely to the against'the lid and preventing lateral swinging movement of the holder on the box.
