NON-FREEZABLE AUTOMATIC FOUNTAIN.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARGHIBALD M. C. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Correctionville, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Non- Freezable Automatic Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to improve- 1 ing no air valves, screws or gaskets and one which shall be water-tight, and which may be easily and quickly removed from the casing therefor should repairs be required.
A further object of the invention is to produce a drinking fountain for stock and fowls including a casing having arranged therein a trough and a revoluble reservoir arranged above the trough wihich, when turned to one position will permit the filling thereof from the top of the casing, after such filling the inlet for the reservoir being closed, and when turned to bring the inlet over the trough the same will be automatically opened to deliver water to the trough, a heating device being arranged in the casing below the trough, and the trough extending the length of the casing permits of a circulation of the water so that the same will be heated throughout even when the heating device is arranged only at one point with respect to the trough.
A further object of the invention is to produce a device of this character wherein the water in the trough will be protected,
' as far as possible, from dirt, etc; one which is of a simple construction, automatic in feeding the water to the trough, one in which the reservoir may be conveniently filled without removal from the casing therefor, and one which may be easily constructed and marketed at a' fair selling price. 1 The foregoing objects and others which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts, such as illustrated by the accompanying drawings.

- As disclosed by the drawings a housing or casing lO'is employed, the same being preferably, but not necessarily of a rectangular formation and comprises two parts, the lower portion being indicated by the numeral 11 and the upper by the numeral 12. The upper portion rests directly on the lower portion and is removable therefrom, and the said upper portion has, preferably at the center thereof an opening surrounded by an annular ring or flange 13.
The lower section has arranged therein a water receiving trough 14 that preferably extends the length of the casing and is of a width equaling that of the casing. The section 11, on the sides thereof, and preferably at the center of the same is formed with outstanding angular flanges 15 that are engaged by similar flanges 16 on the sides of the trough 14. The flanges are closed at the ends thereof, and the sides of the casing, directly above the said flanges have openings which may be formed by slitting said sides and bending the metal bounded by the slits inwardly providing walls 17 having ends 18 that are connected to the edges of the casing at the referred to slit portions. It will thus be seen that the casing, upon the opposite sides thereof is provided with inlets whereby stock or fowls may obtain access to the water that is delivered in the trough 14, the said walls 17 and 18 serving as means for retaining the heat in the device, when the water in the trough is heated, as in cold weather, in a manner which will presently be described and also serving as means for preventing the stock or fowls forcing their heads too far into the casing and interfering with the said reservoir which a .will presently be described.

There is preferably a tongue and groove connection between the sections 11 and 12 of the casing 10, and the said sections, at the ends of the casing have round alining openings 10 therethrough that provide bearings for a shaft 19 that extends centrally through a tubular tank 20. The ends of the tank are, of course, closed, the shaft 19 being soldered or otherwise securely connected to the said ends to provide a water- One end of the shaft 19 preferably extends beyond one end of the tank, which provides the water reservoir, a greater distance than does the other end, and the longer end, indicated for distinction by the numeral 21 has a transverse opening therethrough receiving therein a handle member 22 that has its opposite ends headed as at 23.
The reservoir tank is centrally provided with an opening surrounded by a spout 24. I-lingedly secured to one side of the spout, as at 25, is a cap 26 that normally closes the said spout. reservoir adjacent to the spout 24 and opposite the hinge connection of the cap 26 with the said spout, is a catch 27, preferably spring influenced in one direction, and this cap is designed to engage with the lip 28 on the cap 26 to lock the cap closed on the spout. A suitable compressible gasket or packing is arranged between the mouth of the spout and the cap, the same being preferably positioned in the cap which is, as disclosed by the drawings, substantially saucer-shaped, and this insures a watertight oint between the cap and spout.
The catch 27, outward of its engaging lip is provided with an extension which may be termed a finger and which is indicated by the numeral 29. This finger is disposed to engage with a cam-shaped contact mem ber 80 on the bottom of the trough lat, when the handle 22 is operated to turn the shaft be freely delivered thereto. It is, of course,
to be understood that the reservoir is turned Pivotally secured to the in only one direction when being brought to position to deliver the water to the trough, and when the level of the water in the trough closes the mouth of the funnel a water seal is provided between the reservoir and the trough, so that water will be automatically fed from the reservoir to the trough as the same is consumed by the stock or fowls. lVhen the reservoir is in delivery position the funnel 31 may be arranged over the annular flange 13 with the spout 24 upwardly, thus providing a ventilation for the interior of the casing above the trough.
In the compartment provided between the trough 1a and the lower section 11 of the casing I arrange, in cold weather, a heater, such as a lamp, indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawing and designated by the character 33. The trough, as previously stated, being of a size approximately equaling that of the casing permits of the lamp being arranged at any part of the device, but the same is preferably arranged at the center thereof, and the water in the trough will be heated at an even temperature throughout.
If desired, suitable means may be employed for locking the handle when the reservoir is in delivery or in receiving position, and it is thought, from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings that the simplicity and advantages of the construction will be apparent without further detailed description.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a device for the purpose set forth, a casing having openings in the sides thereof, a trough therein opposite said openings, a revoluble reservoir in the casing above the trough, a spout therefor, a hinged cap for closing the spout, a catch for engaging the cap for holding the same in closed position, and means 011 the trough for engaging the catch to release the same when the spout of the reservoir is brought into the trough.
2. In a device for the purpose set forth, a casing having openings in the sides thereof, outturned flanges at the lower portions of said openings, a trough supported thereon, inturned flanges at the upper portions of said, openings, a revoluble water reservoir tank in the casing above the trough, meansarranged exteriorly of the casing for revolving the reservoir, a spout for the reservoir, a cap normally closing the same, a catch for engaging the cap to hold the same in closed position, and a contact member in the trough designed to engage with the catch torelease the cap when the reservoir has been turned to one position.
3. In a device for the purpose set forth, a. casing having a flanged. opening in the top thereof and oppositely disposed openings in the sides thereof, outturned flanges at the lower portions of the last mentioned openings, a trough supported on said flanges, inturned flanges at the top of the said openings, a Water tank having its ends provided With trunnions journaled -in the ends of the casing, a handle on one of said trunnions, a spout for the tank, a cap for closing said spout, a catch for locking said cap in closed position, and a contact element in the trough designed to engage With the catch to release the cap When the funnel of the tank has been brought to delivery position With respect to the tank.
