Description
c. v. SMOCK.
.JAR LID LIFTER.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 8.1919.

CLAUDE V. SMOCK, 0F PORTLAND, OREGON.
JAR-LID LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 28, 1919.
Application filed July 8, 1919. Serial No. 309,375.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE V. SMocK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in J ar-Lid Lifters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in jar cap lifters; and the primary object of my invention is to provide a cap lifter especially adapted to be used in removing the caps from that class of fruit jars known as Economy jars.
Another object is to provide a jar cap lifter including mean whereby ordinary bottle caps may be removed.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and finally pointed out in the appended claims, it being further understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made Within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of thi specification, and in which llke numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views; Figure 1, shows a side view of an economy jar showing my lifter in position; Fig. 2 is a broken detail of a jar showing the lifting lever in edge view; Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of my lifter.
In my present invention I provide a simply constructed readily operated means for lifting an Economy fruit jar .cap. These caps L a shown in the drawing do not screw on the jar J but are sealed thereon in using a rubber packing ring in such a manner that the caps are held in place by means of a vacuum formed in the jar. In order to re move the cap the same must be lifted to break the seal or vacuum, which requires a specially made tool disclosed in my invention where 1 designates an open spring collar the ends of which are recurved as shown at 2, 2, to provide the finger holds by means of which the collar is held in working posi tion, as shown in Fig. 1.
copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Projecting outward from the collar, preferably at a point opposite the curved holdmg ends 2 is a stud or pin 3 on which is pivotally held the lifting lever 4 the stud being located at a point opposite the holding ends 2, 2. The lever ends in the bottle opening hook 5 as shown, at its lower end, while the short offset upper end 6 of the lever ends in the cam head 7 having the shaped edge groove 8 adapted to engage the edge of the economy lid L in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
As shown the cam end of the lever is curved as at a, the cam head engaging the edge of the lid at the lower edge so that on swinging the leven downward the lid will be fully engaged to lift the same and break the seal.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the and the minor details be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A jar opener including a spring clamping collar having its ends recurved to provide finger holds, an outstanding stud secured to said collar, and a lever pivotally held on said stud having one end offset and ending in a grooved cam head, all arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A jar opener of the class described, including a pring metal collar having its ends recurved to provide finger holds, an out. standing pin secured to said collar, and a lever pivotally connected to said pin, whereby on rocking said lever a jar top may be raised to remove the same, as and in the manner set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
