This invention relates to improvements in railway safety devices, and aims to provide of which the following is a means for automatically setting the brakes of an air brake system, in the event of any one or more of the cartrucks leaving the rail. 1 a
' Broadly stated, the invention contemplates means carried by the car for contact with the road bed, in the event of the wheels leaving the rails, said means acting to open the train line and exhaust the air to set the brakes for the" entire train.
The invention therefore consists of the-following described method, the details of construction to be hereinafter described being for purposes of illustration, as this structure may be varied Without departlng from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantagesof the invention.

vide a pivotal movement for the shoe upon the crank arm. In order to hold the contact member 13 normally in a vertical posit1on,,a flat spring 17 is secured to each side of the shoe 14 and has its free upper end in contacting engagement with a wedge 18 rigidly secured to the-crank arm 12. The length of themember 13 is such that when the wheels of the truck are upon the rails, the shoe 14 is disposed above and out of contact with the roadway, but should the wheels leave the rails the shoe will act to rock the shaft 12. By securing the contact member 13 in the manner shown, injury thereto is prevented through its oscillating orpivotal rods 20. The end of the rod 20 is adjustably connected with the arm 19 and the opposite end of this rod is pivoted to the ratchet an angle cock 22 ofthe train line. The connection between the rod 20 and the handle 21 is such that when the shaft 10 is rocked, the rod 20 will be moved to operate the handle 21 and open the cook 22, while a spring 23 engaging the arm 19 will return said rod and shaft 10 to its original or normal position, the handle 21 of the angle cook 22 will remain in open position until manually closed.
In practice one of these devices is applied to each of the trucks, so that if the wheels of any trucks on the train leaves the rails, the contact member 13 will operate to open the angle cock and apply the brakes of the entire train.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as will properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
We claim 1. The combination with an air brake system for railway cars, of a rock shaft positioned transversely across said cars, a crank at each end of said shaft, a contact ,member pivotally connected to each of said cranks and normally disposed above the surface of the road bed when the wheels are on the rails and adapted to contact with the road bed when'the wheels leave the rails and operate the rock shaft and means connecting the rock shaft with a valve in the train line for operating the latter to apply the brakes.
2. The combination with an air brake sys tem for railway cars, of a rock shaft posil tioned transversely across said cars, a crank at each end of said shaft, a contact member pivotally connected to each of said cranks and normally disposed above the surface of the road bed When the vvheels are on the rails and adapted to contact with the road bed when the Wheels leave the rails and operate said "rock shaft, means for connecting the Contact members to the "rock shaft to "permit f a yielding rotary movement and means connecting the roek shaft and a valve in the train line for operating the latter to apply the brakes.
