HAROLD J. NAGLE, or ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR, iBY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
TO CEDAROID CO. INC., OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION.
7 Box For. cleans.
and useful Box for'Cigar's, fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings,
The present invention relates to boxes for" cigars and it has for an object to provide a construction which is made from wood pulp and will not communicate deleterious odors to the cigars and, at the same time, will permit the moisture from the cigars to escape without causing them to become too dry and without admitting too much moisture or any odors from the surrounding atmosphere.
To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front view of a box constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a front view of the box before the border strips are placed thereon;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line H, Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 isan enlarged section on the line bb, Fig. 1; and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on the line 0-0, Fig. 1.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the side walls and the bottom wall of the box are made from a single blank of solid woodpulp board which ischemically pure that is, it is non-filled and has no paper or rag stock. To simulate a cedar box,.
this board is coated on both sides with a stain which has an odor of cedar with all other odors eliminated or substantially so.
The board is preferably about one-quarter of an inch thick and the side walls 1 are in one piece with the bottom wall 2, the blank being scored and the side walls being turned at right angles to the bottom wall and providing channels or grooves 3 entirely about the bottom wall at the base of the side walls.
The side walls 1 may be provided with horizontal grooves of channels 4. preferably in proximity to their upper and lower edges on the front face thereof, and also with vertical channels 5 near opposite ends intersecting the channels 4 and extendlng from Spe cification of Letters Patent. Patent'd Oct, 28, 1919, Applicatioflfiled March 20,15 15 Serial No. 15,737. V
the upper to the lower edges of said wall so as to connect also with the base channel 3. The bo'ttom wall 2is. also provided with channels 6 parallel with. the longitudinal edges of said wallgand' also parallel with the transverse edges of the wall, said chan nels intersecting each other'in proximityto the corners of the boxes and also intersect ing the base channel 3. The channels. 4,
5 and 6 are provided at intervals with open-' ings 7 which extend through the wall of the box, and openings 16- provide communication between the channel 3 and the interior of the box.
The corners of the box are held together by staples 8 which not only pass into the side walls but pass through areinforcing 'strip 9 of heavy manila stock which is bentabout the corners and ,adhesively secured thereto. Border strips 10 are secured over,
all corners of the box and also over the upper edges of the side walls' These strips bridge the channels 4:, 5 and 6 so as to close the same to the external atmosphere thus providing, in the box walls, a number of communicating channels which open tothe interior of the box. By this arrangement,
the moisture'in the cigars is permitted to' escape very slowly through the openings 7 into the channels 4:, 5' and 6 and is absorbed by the thinpaper covering or border strips 10 which are dried by the external atmos-' phere. At the same time, these strips prevent the entrance of any externalodors and,
even though they absorb moisture from the externalatmosphere, such moisture will not penetrate the box to any great extent as it will be dried before passing through the small openings.
It is desirable thatthe two end side walls 1 shall project slightly above the front and rear side walls so that their upper edges shall .be flush with the upper face of the cover 11 which is hinged at 12 in the usual manner to the rear side wall. .and rests on theupper edge of the front side wall as is commonln cigar boxes; A tack which is usually employed for securing a cigarbox cover has been foundundesirable in this box as it tends toseparate the laminations of the front walls and forthis reason. I
have designed a .novel means of securing the cover in closed position without pene trating the paper board in the direction of its laminations. This means embodies a tongue 13 formed of flexible metal stock and secured on the inner face of the front Wall preferably by an eyelet let which passes through aperforation in the front Wall coincident With the channel 4 so that it also serves to connect said channel With the interior of the box. As the outer end of the eyelet lies in the channel, it is covered by the border and in this Way is not visible on the exterior of the box. The cover 11 is provided With a slit 15 in proximity to its edge and the tongue is passed through this slit and bent -forwardly and clown- Wardly as shown in Fig. 5 thus securing the cover in closed position.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each yby WashingtomD. 0.
It is apparent that there has been 'provlded an inexpensive box made from ood stock and not communlcatmgadeleter1ous odor to thecigars" vvhileat the same time. permittlng the moisture to escape slowly 'wlthout admltting an undue amount of moisture or any external odors.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A tobacco receptacle having a Wall formed With an exterior channel opening at intervals to the interior of the box,vand a paper covering onthe exterior of the box closing said channel,
HAROLD J. NAGLE.
