PUMP-OPERATING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 21, 1919.
Application filed .T une 8, 1918. Serial No. 238,984.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, BnYN'rn BniNTnsoN. a'eitizen ot the United States, residing at debolt, in the county of Sac and State ot' Iowa, have invented certain new and use'ful Improvements in Pump-Gperating lvIechanism7 ot which the following is a speciiica tion.
The invention'relates to a pump operating mechanism. The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of pumpoperating mechanism and to provide a simple, practical and efficient pump operating mechanism of strong, durable and com paratively inexpensive construction adapted to reciprocate positively the vertical pump rods or stocks ot' a double acting pump.
VJ ith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement ot parts hereinaiitertnlly described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood'that various changes in the torni, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope Y oit the appended claims may be resorted to without departing 'from the spirit or sacrilicing any ot the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pump operating mechanism constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional viewof the same. Y
Fig. 3 is a detail view ot the Apump rod cushioning device.
Like numerals oil reference designato corresponding parts in the several ligures oit the drawin'.
In the accompanying drawing in which is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, the pump operating mechanism comprises in its construction a pair ot'. vertical reciprocating` rods or stocks 1 and 2 having upper and lower racks which are adapted to mesh with upper and lower prnions .41- and 5 which are located at opposite sides of the pump rods and which are alternately carried into engagement with the same, the pinions at the right hand side ot the pump rod being adapted to mesh with the racks `for moving the pump rods m. a downward direction and the pinions at the left hand side of the pump rods being adapted to mesh with the coacting racks te impart an upward movement to the pump rods. The upper pinions it coact with and actuate one pump rod and the lower set ot' pinions 5 reciprocate the other pump rod. The pinions 11 and 5 are slidably mounted on and carried by upper and lower slidable supports 6 and which are mounted upon upper and lower portions 8 and 9 ot a main or supporting 'frame 10 which may be of any desired construction and which may be also provided with any suitable means for guiding the supporting members 6 and 'T in their sliding movement to gear the pinions alternately into engagement with the racks ot the pump rod.
The pinions are moved simultaneously to carry them into and out of meslrwith the said racks and with a master gear il, suitably mounted upon the main or supporting frame l0 Vby a shaft or axle 12 and meshing with a driving gear 13, which-may be operated from Vany suitable source ot power. Thefmaster gear is located between the'upper and lower'pinions -L and 5 and it simultaneously engages one of the pinions at the right hand side of the pump rods or stocks and one of the pinions at the left hand side ot the same to move the pump rods in opposite directions. IVhen the right hand pinion is in mesh with the rack of one pump rod the latter will be moved downwardly and when the left hand pinion is in mesh with the rack of the other pump rod the same will. be moved upwardly.
The upper .slidable support, which has a limited movement in each direction is locked against accidental movement by means o't dogs 15 and 16 to maintain therupper pinions alternately in mesh with the master gear and with the pump rod. The dog'15 which is pivoted or hinged at the outerV end as shownis adapted to drop into abutment with the adjacent end of the slidable support G when the latter is moved to the right, and it is urged downwardly by gravity and also by a spring 17 ot a trip or operating rod 1S having its upper end arranged to lift the pawlor dog 15 and .its lower end located in the path ot' eccentric-ally arranged projections 19 which are Vcarried by the master wheel 11.
