Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed March 1, 1917. Serial No. 151,660.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THoMAs BEAGHEN, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Vernon, in the county of WVestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tank-Cars, of which the following is a I specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in tank cars, and more particularly to tank cars of that type in which the tank body is supported upon an under-fram ing which in turn is mounted upon wheel trucks, and in which structure is provided a longitudinal center sill or sills for connecting the end under-frame structures which support the tank body upon the wheel trucks.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an end under-frame structure for supporting the tank body upon the truck which will be simple in construction, durable and eflicient in use, which may be readily installed when building the car, and which may be readily removed and repaired or replaced when necessary due to accident or other causes.
A. further object is to provide, as a new article of manufacture, an end under-frame structure, which will embody the structural features and functions, of a body bolster, a king-bolt center-bearing, a tank saddle orcradle, and also connections for the center sills and the draft-rigging beams, all of said parts. of said undei fra-me structure being preferably made'in an integral piece.
The invention consists in the improvements to be more fully described hereinafter, and the novelty of which will be particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.
I have fully and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings, to be taken as a part of this specification, and wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of-one end of a tank car structure, the same including one embodiment of my invention.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, and particularly to Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive:
l designates a tank-body, which may. be of any approved construction usually employed as a part of railway tank cars for conveying liquids in bulk, and 2 designates a wheel-truck upon which the said tankbody is supported and transported. This truck may be of any of the well-known or approved types which is suitable for the purpose. As the truck illustrated constitutes no part of my present invention, I have only illustrated the same in dotted lines, and will not describe the same specifically. This truck includes the usual truck bolster, shown at 3, provided with a central king-bolt -socket 3 and center bearing 3 of any approved type.
' I will now proceed to describe an embodiment of the underframe structure constituting my invention for supportingthe tankbody in the wheel trucks. I have only illustrated one end of the under-frame structure, but this will be suflicient, as it will be understood that both end structures of the car are the same and that, therefore, a description of one will suflice for both.
4 designates a center-piece consisting preferably of upper and lower horizontal walls or webs 5, 6, connected by side webs 7, 8, and by a transverse web 9, the lateral ends of which are integral with the side webs 7, 8, and the upper and lower edges of which are integral withthe walls 5, 6, thereby forming a rigid box-like structure. At a point intermediate its ends and coinciding with the center of the center-piece 41, said web 9 is formed to constitute a vertically extending sleeve 10, the ends of which are integral with the walls 5, 6, and the bore 11 of which opens therethrough, said sleeve and bore providing a king-bolt bearing to receive the king-bolt 12 by which the centerpiece 4 is pivoted to the truck bolster.
The lower face of the wall 6 is formed with a center bearing boss 13, concentric with the king-bolt, and adapted to be seated in the center bearing 3 Projecting laterally from the center-piece 4; are oppositely-extending members let, 15, integral with said center-piece. Each of these members 14:, 15, consists of a substan tially vertical web or wall 16 supporting at its upper edge a flat web 17 which, for a distance adjacent the center-piece, lies in the same horizontal plane as the wall 5, as shown at 18, and from this point is inclinedupward and outward toward the outer end of said member to provide one member 18 of a tank cradle. At its lower edge the web 16 is formed with a substantially horizontally disposed flange or member 19 provided at its outer end with an end bearing surface 20 adapted to bear upon the end bearings (not shown) of the truck bolster. At its outer end each of the webs 16 is provided with an end flange 21eonnecting the flanges or walls 17, 19, heretofore described. The upper face of the web 17 is provided with transverse seats or channels 22 adapted to i receive saddle-blocks 23 upon which the tank-body l rests when supported in position in the cradle. It will be understood that, when the center-piece is in position in the car structure, the channels 22 and the blocks 23 extend longitudinally of the car structure. The said members 14, 15, and said center-piece, are formed in an integral piece so to constitute a center-piece for the king-bolt bearing and also the members of a body bolster and a tank cradle, and, therefore, providing in one structure all the features and functions of a center bearing, a body bolster, and a tank cradle.
Projecting rearward from the centerpiece 1 and integral therewith is a member adapted to be connected by rivets or other suitable fastening means to the center sill or sills of the car under-framing. This projection or center sill connection I also make integral with the combined bolster and tank cradle, said projection consisting of upper and lower walls 24: and 25, respectively, forming extensions of the walls 5, 6, heretofore described, said walls 2 1 and 25 being joined at points adjacent their side edges by vertically-disposed side walls 26, 27, joined to, or forming extensions of, the walls 7, S, heretofore described. These walls 26, 27, are adapted to be engaged on their side faces by the intermediate webs 28 of the longitudinally-extending center sills of the car, the connection being made by any suitable fastening means such as rivets 29. On the side of the center-piece opposite to the projection for connection to the center sills, I provide a forwardly-extending projection 30 consisting of upper and lower plates 31, 32, forming'continuations of the plates 5 and 6, respectively, and connected at their longitudinal side edges by spaced webs 38, 34, which may be formed as continuations of the walls 7, 8, heretofore described. This projection 30 is also formed integral with the combined body bolster and tank cradle and is adapted to be connected to the frame or side beams of.
the draft rigging. My invention is not limited to any particular type of draft rigging, or the frame construction therefor, but I have shown a frame construction consisting of two side beams 35, 36, arranged in parallel relation longitudinally of the car and having their ends respectively located on the outer faces of the said projection 30 and riveted to the said side walls 33, 34:, thereof, the rivets being shown at 37 The opposite ends of the draft rigging beams 35, 36, from those which are connected to the projection 30, are rigidly connected by rivets or other means 38 to the transverse end member 39 of the under-frame, which carries the guide-box or draw-bar frame 10' for the draw-bar 411 of a car coupler. In. order to prevent shearing of the rivets connecting the side beams of the draftrigging frame with the projection 30, I preferably provide the inner faces of said beams with shoulders 42 which abut the end of the pro jection 30 so that the thrust exerted upon said side beams, either due to coupling blows, collisions, or other pauses, is taken up by said beams and the projection 30, and is not thrown entirely upon the fastening rivets.
On the outer end of each of the members 14, 15, is a jack-beam 43 having at its inner end a flange 4st secured by headed riv-V ets 4:5 to the flange 21, heretofore described, said j ack-beam having on its lower portion a projection or face 46 to receive the head of a jack when it is desired toraise or lower the body bolster structure.
The jack beams 43 may also be employed as supports for running boards 43 extending longitudinally of the car.
Secured to the outer ends of the jackbeams are the side-frame members 457 of the car under-framing, which side-frame mem- As a provision for increased rigidity of the bers are secured at their ends to the endmember 39, heretofore described. From the above description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be seen that I have provided as a new article of manufacture a single structure performing all the functions of a body-bolster, a tank cradle, and connections for the draft-rigging and the center sills. By providing all of these features in a single structure, I am able to provide a construction having great strength, and which may be readily installed either when the car is being originally built, or in case of repair, requiring new bolsters, or repair of the draft rigging for the center sills, because I am able, with comparative facility, to separate the wrecked draft-rigging or center sills from the bolster and again use the latter without the necessity of practically rebuilding the entire under-framing of the car.
In Figs. 8, 9 and 10 I have shown a modified structure of the same invention in which the general and essential features are substantially the same as that shown in Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive, but in which the construction of the projection for connection with the draft-rigging is modified. In this form said projection 30 comprises vertical side members 48 forming extensions of the walls 7, 8, heretofore described, and upper and lower flange members 49 forming extensions of the walls 5, 6, the ends of said spaced members being provided with verticallydisposed securing flanges or webs 50 to which the inner ends of the side beams of the draft rigging are connected by rivets 51.

The construction of the combined bolster and cradle shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10 has all the advantages, and performs all the functions. as that illustrated in Figs. 1 to 7, inclusive.
I have shown the general arrangement and construction of a well-known type of draft-rigging in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings in order to show the relation of the same in connection with my invention but, as this draft-rigging specifically does not constitute my invention I have not described the same in detail.
What I- claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. As a new article of manufacture, an end under-frame structure for tank cars consisting of a center-piece having a king-bolt bearing, oppositely disposed members integral with the center -piece and forming therewith a body bolster and a tank cradle, jack beams supported by the ends of said members, and connections integral with said center piece adapted to be connected to a center sill structure and a draft-rigging re spectively.
2. In an underframe for a tank car, in combination, an end structure formed as a single piece onsisting of a centerpiece having a king-bolt bearing, and oppositely extending members, constituting with said center-piece a body bolster and a tank cradle, jack beams carried by the ends of said members, longitudinal side-frame members secured to the ends of the jack beams, a member extending forwardly from said center-piece, an end member connecting said side-frame members, and a draft beam connecting said forwardly extending member with said end member.
3. In a tank car construction, in combination, an under-frame including an end under-frame structure in a single piece consisting of a center-piece having a king-bolt bearing, oppositely disposed members projecting from said center-piece and forming therewith a body bolster and a tank cradle, rearwardly and forwardly extending projections from said center-piece, center sills connected to the rearwardly extending projection, jack beams connected to the ends of said members, side beams connected to the ends of the jack beams, end members connecting said side beams, and draft beams connecting said end members with the forwardly extending projection on the centerpiece.
4. In a tank car construction in combination, an underframe including an end structure formed as a single piece comprising a center piece having a king bolt bearing and oppositely disposed members projecting from said center piece and forming there with a body bolster and a body cradle, jack beams connected to the ends of said members, side beams connected to the'ends of the jack beams, an end member connecting said side beams, and draft beams connecting said end member with said center piece.
