MASK.
Application filed March 28, 1919. Serial No. 285,766.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMEs AUGUSTUS DOBEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Johnston, in the county of Edgefield and State of South Carolina, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Masks, of which thefollowing is a speci fication. Y
My invention is an improvement in masks, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified adapted for use by doctors, nurses and the like, when in the presence of patients suffering from influenza, meningitis, and other diseases communicated through discharges from the nose and mouth.
In the drawing Figure l is a perspective view showing the improved mask in use.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the mask looking inside.
Fig. 3 is a side view.
Fig. at is a plan view of the cover.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the frame.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view showing the means for supporting a pledget of cotton at the nostrils.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the cover and its connecting frame. In the present embodiment of the invention, a suitable supporting frame 1 is provided of oblong looped shape, the said frame being of less width at its top than at its bottom and shaped to fit from the junction of the nose with the forehead to beneath the chin.
The large end of the loop is of sufficient width to-fit about the chin, and beneath the same. Cross wires 2 and 3 complete the frame, the said wires being arched as shown and arranged with the arch inthe same di- 7 rection. These wires 2 and 3 have their ends lapped about the loop wire 1, and they are designed to hold the cover well away from the nose and mouth to provide breathing space.
The cover for the frame,'which'is of as shown at 6 in Fig. 7, so that the loop Copies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.

may be enlarged to permit it to be fitted over the frame 1 and into the frame as shown in Fig. 3.
A pledget 7 of cotton or like absorbent material may be connected with the body of the arch 3, the said pledget being adapted to hold an antiseptic or the like.
The improved mask may be held on the face over the nose and mouth by means of a cord 8, which may be connected to'the frame 1 at the ends of the arch 2.
In placing the cover on the frame 1, 2, 3, the frame 5 is enlarged until it will pass around the frame 1. It is then contracted until it passes through the frame 1 on the same side as the arches 2 and 3. Here the 7 is connected, the ends of the loop being slidable upon each other and said loop being adapted to be passed over the loop of the first named frame, and through the loop of the frame to hold the cover in place.
2. A mask comprising a loop shaped frame, a cover for the frame, a split loop shaped frame to which the edge of the cover is secured, said split loop being adapted to be passed over the loop of the first named frame and through the loop and to beexpanded between the loop and the body. of
the cover to hold the cover in place, said first named loop having arches for dis tending the cover. p
3. A mask comprising a loop shaped frame, a cover for the frame, a split loop shaped frame to which they edge of the cover;
frame and through theloop and to be exis secured, said split loop beinguadaptedgtop *be passed over theloop of-the first named panded between the loop and the 'body' of' the cover to hold the cover in place.
