IMP ROVEM ENT IN PAPER PADS.
Specification forming part of Letters. Patent No. 131,915, dated October 1,1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAvILL1oN VAN GAM- PEN, of the h city, county, and State of New York, haveinvented an Improvement in Blocks or Pads for Writing, Drawing, and other purposes, of which therollowin g is a specification The object-of this invention is to provide formaking up and-remakin g a block or pad with commercial blanks, or drawing or writing. paper, as may be desired, at a very trifling ex pense and very little trouble; To this end it consists in a base piece or backing notched near the corners, and an elastic band or hands so applied as to cross the corner portions of the blanks or paper of which the block or pad is made up, and so secure them inplace on the backing.
Inthe accompanying drawing, Figure l is a front View of a block or pad made according to my. invention; Fig. 2 is a back view of the same; and Fig. 3 is an edge view thereof.

A is the base piece or backing on which the block or pad is to be formed. It is made of binders board or other suitable material, and

band B. Instead of single elastic band B there may be separate bands for each corner, or, if preferred, for two corners, so long as they cross the corners of the base pieces described.
The block or pad backing may be sold with or without blanks, or the latter may be supplied it to order. The purchaser may make up the block or pad himself with commercial blanks, writing or drawing paper, and when these are exhausted may remake the block in f the same way. These blocks or pads may be made up at a very trifling expense and with very little trouble, it being only necessary to lay theblanks on the base piece and pull the bands or crossed portions of the same band over the corner portions of said blanks, as
shown in the drawing.
Claim.
