To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN M. WARFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Harrison, in the county of Hudson, State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Garbage- Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garbage receptacles and particularly to garbage receptacles which are adapted to prevent the escape of odors or the exposure of the contents when the cover is removed.

One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved device of this character wherein the contents of the receptacle are completely covered When the lid of the receptacle is removed for the introduction of garbage, thereby preventing the escape of oflensive odors.

Another object is to provide a novel and improved device of this character wherein there is efiected simplicity and cheapness in the manufacture of the device, and the economy of material.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents a cylindrical metal casing having the removable cover or lid 11, and the handle 12.

In the front wall of the casing 10, at a suitable distance below the upper end thereof, there is formed a transversely extending slot 13, and slidable through this slot, and into the interior of the casing, is a metal plate 14, said plate being disposed in a hori zontal plane, and arranged to receive thereon the garbage which is introduced through the upper open end of the casing, when the cover is removed.- Secured to the inner face of the wall of the casing, at two diametrically opposite points, and extending forwardly and rearwarclly in parallel relation, are the plates 15, each of which is slightly bowed toward the center of the casing and has a longitudinally extending channel 16 pressed therein. Within these channels the longer marginal edges of the plate 14 are disposed for sliding movement .The outer end of the plate extends through the slot 13 and is formed with a hand held 17, by means of which said plate may be moved inwardly and outwardly. The slot 13 is of a width slightly less than the thickness of the plate 14, the upper wall of the slot being bent to incline inwardly and downwardly, to a slight degree, as shown at 18, and is arranged to contact with the upper face of the plate to scrape off the garbage deposited thereon, as said plate is pulled outwardly.

The .plates 15 are secured to the walls of the casing by means of the rivets 19. The inner end of the plate 14 is of the same outline as the inner contour of the rear portion of the wall of the casing, and is adapted, when said plate is at its inmost position, to bear against the said wall.

In the operation of the device, the sliding plate 14 is first pushed inwardly, the cover removed, and the garbage dumped onto the upper face of said plate. When the cover is removed the plate 14 completely covers the contents of the receptacle and also prevents escape of odors therefrom. After the garbage has been placed on the plate 14,, the cover is replaced and the plate 14 pulled outwardly whereby the inclined upper wall of the slot 13 will scrape off said garbage and cause the same to drop into the receptacle. The plate is then pushed inwardly to its normal position.
