Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. QUENTEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Adding-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to adding machines, and more particularly to that class of such machines in which eitheradlding or `subtracting may be done;v and in which the subtracting is effected by complemental adding.
In Letters Patent No. 1,293,541, granted to me February 4, 1919, is shown an adding machine comprising adding devices, printing devices associated therewith, and a pluralit)7 of series or columns of keys for respectively controlling the several adding and printing devices whereby, in the operation of adding, when a key is operated the value of the key will be added and printed; together with adjusting means which, when set for subtraction, will so adjust the parts that when a key is operated the true or actual value thereof will be added and the complemental value thereof printed. In order to facilitate the use of this machine for purposes of subtraction, the several keys bear each two figures, namely, a relatively large one representing the actual or adding value of the key, and another smaller -one representing the complemental. value of the key. In the operation of subtraction the keys are selected in accordance with the smaller or complementa] figures which they bear, so that in setting up an item to be subtracted the keys whose true values correspond to the complements of the several digits of said number are operated, whereupon said true values, which constitute the complement of the number to besubtracted, will be added, but the complement of said true value, constituting the true value of the number to be subtracted, will be printed.
The present invention has for its 'object to avoid the necessity for employing two figures on each key, and make it possible, when the machine is set for subtraction, to set up an item to be subtracted by the operation of the keys whose true values correspond to said item, in the same manner as..
setting up an item for addition. To this end theA invention comprises a simple and improved mechanism which may be so adjusted for subtraction that when a key is operated the complemental rather than the true value thereof will'be added and, preferably, the true value thereof printed.
The foregoing and other objects of the invention, together with means whereby the same may be carried into effect, will best be understood from the following description of one form or embodiment thereof illustrat-ed in the accompanying drawings. It will be understood, however, that the particular construction described and shown has been chosen for illustrative purposes merely, and that th'e invention, as defined by the claims hereunto appended, may be otherwise practised without depart-ing from the spirit and scope thereof.

Referring to Fig. l, A denotes the left side frame part of the machine, it being understood that the mechanism of the machine is within or between two similar side frame parts connectedA by suitable transverse rods, bars and frame and casing` members, as is usual in machines of this character.

-are slotted to receive and support the key supporting bars 14 corresponding in nurnber to the number of columns of keys wlth which the machine is provided. The slotted keys 15 are arranged to slide vertically in the bars 14, being normally held in their uppermost positions, determined by s top pms 17, by means of springs 16 (see Figs.
6 and 7), but being separately latched in depressed position when operated by means of sliding latch bars 18 controlled by sprlngs 21 (Fig. 1). The latch bars 18 carry pins 24 cooperating with lingers on retaining pawls which, in turn, engage lugs 30x on control bars 30. Said control bars 3() are slidably mounted in slotted transverse frame bars 32 and 32. and areprovided with slots 31 to receive other transverse bars 29, whereby the control bars are mounted for limited longitudinal movement. Each of the control bars 3() is provided with a series of stops 34, hereinafter more fully described, the several stops of each series cooperating'- respectively with stop lingers 15X on the several keys of the corresponding series or column. For the sake of compactness, the stops 34 on each control bar are staggered on opposite sides thereof, as shown most` clearly 1n Fig. 4, the
f cooperating stop fingers 15X being disposed at opposite sides or edges of the keys, as will be clear from comparison of Flgs. 6 and 7. The control bars 30 are connected to the frame member 32" by springs 33 tending to draw said control bars rearwardly, or toward thevright in Fig. 1, but are normally held in the-position shown in the latter figure by 'engagement of the pawls 26 with the lugs 30X. Each of said control bars is provided at its rear end with an inclined and preferably"stepped extension or stop member 30P and carries an auxiliary oppositely inclined stop member 30d.
Cooperating with each of the control bars 3() is an adding wheel actuator 38 having a pin 38" normally held in engagement with a lug 30e on the control bar by means of a spring 39, said actuators being loosely mounted on an operating shaft 43 provided with an operating handle 44. Each actuator 38 comprises a. sector gear 38c which coi'iperates with a gear wheel 52 on an adding wheel 53, the several adding wheels being supported in axial alinement in a swinging frame 54.
Cooperating with the stepped parts or stop member 30" and 30l of the several control bars are type carriers guided for vertical movement in the machinef'rame and each having a series of types 60 cooperating with a platen 64. Each type carrier 1s provided with an arm to which is pivoted switch lever 66 which may be moved intOi-a:4 posltlon to cooperate with either of stepped stop members 30" or 30d carried the corresponding control bar, by means of a'shlfting bar 69 having.upturned lugs 68 engaging Vdownturned ears 67 on the switch levers. The-shifting bar 69 may be moved .longitudinally to operate the switch levers 'by means of a bell-crank lever 70 connected by a link 71 with a shift or subtraction lever 73 pivoted at 74. The link 71 is extended forwardly beyond the lever 73 and is connected at its forward end to a swinging bail 75 carrying a cross rod 75 adapted to engage depending tail portions 26 of the retaining pawls or detents 26.
Fixed to the power shaft 43 near the sides of the frame are arms 84 which carry a cross rod 85, and on one of which is pivoted a pawl 86 cooperating with a latch lever 8() having a finger 79 cooperating with a stud 78 on the subtraction lever 7 3 to hold the latter in subtraction position when moved therein'to. The said lever 80 is provided with a second finger a cooperating with a pin 89 on a bail 90 adapted, when swung forwardly, to engage the rear ends of the latch bars 18.
r1`he type carriers 60 are provided with springs 91 tending to lift the same, but are normally held in the depressed position shown against a stop rod 95by means of the cross rod 92 of a pivoted bail 93 controlled by a spring or springs 96 and having studs 98 which are arranged to be engaged by eX- tensions 84a of the arms 84.
It will be understood that when a key 15 is depressed the latch bar 18 is moved forwardly, or toward the left in Fig. 1, to permit the key to pass, and is then returned by its spring 2l to latch the key in depressed position. The forward movement of the latch bar lifts the corresponding detent 26 and releases the corresponding control bar 30, which is then free to move rearwardly an amount limited or determined by the engagement of the stop finger 15 on the key depressed by the corresponding stop 34 on the control bar. When the lever 44 is operated the rod moves out of engagement with the control bar, thereby permitting a control bar which has been so released to move rearwardly the amount above referred to, the movement of the control bar being accompanied by a similar. movement of the corresponding actuator 38, thereby setting said actuator to advance its adding wheel 53 an amount corresponding to the value of the key depressed upon the return movement o'f the operating lever, as will be familiar to those skilled in the art. Thereafter the arms 84a pick up the pins 98 Aon the bail 93 and lift the cross rod 92, permitting the corresponding type carrier e60 to move upwardly until the switch lever 66 thereon is brought into engagement with the step of the stop member 30 (if the machine is set for addition) which corresponds `der therinfluence of the spring 96, returns the typecarrier 60 to normal, and near the end ofthe return movement the pawl 86 rocks the latch lever 80, which, through its arm 80, moves thebail 90 forwardly, said bail forcing the latch bar 18 forwardly to release the depressed key, which returns to normal under the influence of its spring 16.
Except as hereinafter pointed out, the construction and operation of the parts thus far referred to maybe substantially the same as those of the corresponding parts in Letters Patent No. 1,293,544, above mentioned, and to lwhich reference may be had for a further explanation of the mechanism in general.
In setting the machine for subtraction, the shift lever 73 is operated by drawing its upper end forwardly and is locked in this position by the latch lever 80. This operation shifts the switch levers 66 to cause the same to cooperate with the stop members 30d, and at the same time operates the bail 75 to release the detents 26, thereby unlocking all of the control bars and permitting the same, when released by the bar 85, to move rearwardly their n'iaximum dista-nce unless arrested sooner by a .depressed key. As a result, in my prior construction shownv in the patent above referred to, when the lever 44 was operated the actual value of a key depressed was added upon the adding wheels, but the complemental value of such key was printed by the printing mechanism. In accordance with the present invention, however, provision is made whereby the complemental value of an operated key is added and the actual value thereof printed. To this end, in the construction shown, the stops 34 comprise dogs pivoted at 49 to the control bar 30 and having offset ends 34a to engage the key stops 15". The dogs or stops 34 are adapted to be shifted with respect to the control bar in such a manner that each stop will coperate with its corresponding key stop 15X to limit the. control bar to a movement of a different amount. The extent to which said stops may be thus shifted is such that when said stops are in one position the movements of the control bar will correspond to the true values of theA keys operated. and when said stops are in the other position the movements of the control har will correspond to the colnplemental values of the keys operated.
Thus, in Fig. 2 the parts are shown as adjusted for operations of addition. In this figure the positions of the 1, 2, 3, etc., keys of a column or series are indicated by the characters K', K2. K, etc., the corresponding stops being similarly indicated by the characters S. S2, S, etc. The arrangement, as will'be. familiar to those skilled in thel art, is suc-h that depression of the key K will cause engagement o'f the stop S therewith to permit a longitudinal movemtnt of the conti'ol har through a distance ol one unit spzweedepressionof the key Iv2 will cause engagement of the stop C therewith to permit movement of the control bar two unit spaces, and so on throughoutl the series. For convenience of design, the stop S9 is arranged to occupy a completely inoperative position when the parts are adjusted for addition, depression o'f the key K9 permitting the cont-rol bar to move rearwardly its full distance as limited by the length of the slots 31, which distance is equivalent to nine unit spaces.
In Fig. 3 the parts are shown as adjusted for operations of subtraction. Thus, in this figure the position of the stops 34 with respect to the keys 15 is such that depression of a key will permit longitudinal movement of the control -bar through a number of unit spaces equal to the complement (on a basis of 9) of the value of the key depressed. For example, depression of the key K will cause the stop S by engagement therewith to limit the control bar to a movement of eight. unit spaces, depression of the key K2 will cause the stop S2 by engagement therewith to limit the control bar to a movement of seven unit spaces, and so on throughout the series. With this adjustment the position of the stop S9 is such as to engage the key K0 immediately upon depression of the latter,`
so as to prevent any movement whatsoever of the control bar. As explained more fully in my prior patent above referred to, the keys and control bar stops of the units column or series will preferably be'arranged to cause complementa] movements of the control bar on the basis of 10 instead of on the `basis of 9 as above explained.
Suitable means are provided for shifting the stops 34 from the position shown in Fig. 2 into that shown in Fig. 3. Preferably, and as herein shown, each control bar 3() is provided with a shift bar 35 guided for a definitely limited longitudinal movement on said control bar 'by means of headed studs 36 project-ing from the control bar and passing through slots 37 in said shift har. the latter being normally held in the position shown in Fig. 2 byy means of. a. spring 42 connecting the same with the control har. The shift bar 35 is formed with avgseries of notches 46 and cam slots 4T cooperating with studs 48 projecting from the several dogs'34.

slots 47, and studs 4S with respect tothe pivots 4 9 of the several dogs are such that limited movement of the shift bar 35 through a fixed distance determined h v the length of the slots 37 will cause the movement of each dog required to shift the same between the addition position shown in Fig. 2 andthe subtraction position shown `in Fig. 3. Thus, for example, n'iovement of the shift bar 35 from the position shown in Fig. 2 into that shown in Fig. will cause the stop S to move with respect to the control har seven unit spaces toward theI left. the stop S to move one space to the right, the stop S8 to from the position shown in Fig. 2 into that' shown in Fig. 3 when the machine is set for subtraction, in order thereby to shift all Of the stop dogs 34 on the several control bars, this mechanism, as herein shown, being as follows. Pivoted at 50l1 to each control bar .30 is a bell-crank lever 50 having an upper arm provided with a bifurcated end coperating with a stud 51 on the corresponding shift bar 35, whereby movement of said lever in a counter-clockwise direction from the position shown in Fig. 2 into the position shown in Fig. 3 will cause the desired longitudinal movement of the shift bar 35. The lower arms of all of the levers 50 cooperate with the transverse bar 56 of a bail 57 (see Fig. 1) pivoted at 58 to the frame members A. The bail 57 is formed at one end with a lnger 59 which coperates with a stud 74C carried by the link 71. When said link 71 is moved longitudinally toward'the right by the lever 7 3 in setting the machine for subtraction, the bar 56 moves upwardly, thereby rocking all of the .levers 50 into the position shown in Fig. 3. Said levers are retained in the latter position by means of pawls 99 pivoted at 100 to the several control bars, each of said pawls having a beveled tooth 101 adapted to engage a laterally extending lug 102 on the end of the lower arm of the corresponding lever 50. As herein shown the pawls 99 are arranged to move by gravity from the releasing position shown in Fig. 2 into the locking position shown in Fig. 3, although, if desired,
suitable springs may be provided to move said pawls toward the left from one position to the other. Each of the pawls 99 is formed at its lower end with a curved cam extension 103 coperating with the bar 56, the arrangement being such that as said bar moves downwardly from the position shown in Fig. 3 into that shown in Fig. 2 the engagement thereof with the extensions 103 of the several pawls will cause movement thereof to release the levers 50, the lower arms of which will accordingly follow the downward movement of the bar 56 under the infiuence of vthe springs 4:2. When said bar 56 is moved upwardly, however, to rock the levers 50 it moves away from the cam extensions 103, thereby releasing the pawls 99 and permitting them to lock the levers'50 in their adjusted positions as above explained.
The complete operation will now be apparent, but may be briefly reviewed as follows: Assuming that an item has been set up on the adding wheels 53, and that a second item is to be subtracted therefrom, the shift lever 7 3 will be moved into the subtraction position, thereby shifting the switch levers 66 into a position to copera-te with the stop members 30d, as above explained, and at the same time, through the bail 57 and levers 50, shifting the several shift bars 35 into the position shown in Fig. 3, and positioning all of the stops or dogs 34 for subtraction. The itemy to be subtracted may thereupon be set up by operation of the keys in the same manner as in setting up an item for addition. Thus, assuming, for example, that the numeral 3 appears in the subtrahend in any column, the key K3 in that column will be depressed, so that the rearward movement of the corresponding control bar will be arrested, after said bar has moved through six unit spaces, by engagement of the stop S3 with said key K3. This movement of the control bar will set the corresponding actuator 38 to advance the corresponding adding wheel six units, thereby adding six, the complement of 3, to the total. At the same time the rearward movement of the control bar through six spaces will so position the stop member 30d that the corresponding type carrier 60 will be permitted to move upwardly to the proper position to print the numeral 3.
It will, of course, be understood that, when the machine is set for subtraction, and the control bars 30 released by their detents 25,
and, in the subsequent operation, by the bar 85, all of said control bars (with the exception of the unitsbar) corresponding to columns in which no keys have been depressed move reawardly into the 9 position, the units bar, however, moving into the 10 position, all as more fully explained in my prior patent above mentioned. It will also e understood that when the latch lever is rocked upon the return movement of the power shaft, its end 79 releases the lever 7 3 and permits it to return to normal position under the influence of its spring (not shown).
It will be seen that the invention comprises, essentially, a set of key stops, a second set of stops cooperating therewith to control the adding mechanism, and provision whereby the coperative relationship of the two sets of stops may be adjusted to vary the operation of the adding mechanism consequent to the same operation of the keys. This adjustment may be accomplished in various ways. As herein shown it is done by adjusting the second set of stops above referred to, that is, the stops carried by the control bar, but it is obvious that it could be otherwise effected, and all such equivalent constructions are considered as within the Scope of the invention.
It will also be understood that, While only one unit of the machine, comprising one series or column ot' keys and the mechanism controlled thereby, is illustrated in det-ail herein, the complete machine Will comprise a plurality of such units equal in number to the number of columns for which said machine is designed, as in my prior patent above referred to.
Having thus described my invent-ion I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent: v
1. In an adding lnachine, in combination, adding wheels, actuators for said adding wheels, keys for controlling said actuators, means including a set of stops intermediate the actuators and keys and corresponding in number to said keys for limiting the movements ot' the several actuators, and means for shifting the positions of said stops relative to the actuators and keys, said stops when in one position limiting the movements of the actuators to correspond to the values of the keys operated, and in another position limiting said movements to correspond to the complemental values of the keys operated.
In anv adding machine, in combination, a plurality of series of keys, an adding wheel for each series of keys, an 'actuator' for each adding Wheel, means including a series oty stops intermediate each actuator and its respective series of keys and" corresponding in number to said keys for limiting the movements of the several actuators, and means for shifting the positions of all of said stops relative to the actuators and keys, said stops when in one position limiting the movements of the actuators to correspond to the values of the keys operated, and in another position limiting said movements to correspond to the complemental values of the keys operated; l
3. In an adding machine, in combination, adding Wheels, actuators therefor, keys for controlling said actuators, means including a single series of stops intermediate cach actuator and said keys and adapted to cooperate with said keys for -limiting the movements of the actuators, and means for shifting the positions of all oi.E vsaid stops relative to the actuators and keys, said stops when in one position limiting the movements of the actuators to correspond to tlievalues ot the keys operated, and in another position limiting said movements to correspond to the complemental values of the keys operated.
4. In an adding machine, in combination, an adding Wheel, an actuator therefor. digit keys for controlling said actuator, means including a series of stops intermediate said actuator and keys for limiting the movement of said actuator, the several stops being adjustable varying distances corresponding respectively 1n distance and direction to the differences bet-Ween the several digits represented by the keys and the complen'icntal values of said digits, and means for controlling such adjustment of said stops.
5. In an adding machine, in combination, a plurality of series of keys, an adding wheel for each series of keys, an actuator for each adding wheel, means including a series ot' stops intermediate each actuator and its respective series of keystor limiting the movements of the several actuators, the several stops of each series being shiftable relative to the actuators and keys -varying distances corresponding respectively in distance and direction to the differences between the values of the several keys of each series and the complemental values of said keys, and means for so shifting all of said stops.
6. In an adding machine, in combination, adding Wheels, actuators therefor, keys for controlling said actuators, a stop carried by each of said keys, and means, including a single set of stops corresponding in number to said keys and adapted to engage said -key stops respectively for limiting the movements of the actuators, said last -namcd stops being adjustable to vary the extent of movement of the severa-l actuators limited by the operation of said keys.
T. In an adding machine, in combination, adding wheels, actuators therefor, a single set of key stops, and meansn including a single set ot' stops corresponding in number to said key stops and adapted to engage said key stops respectively for limiting` the movements ot' the actuators, said last-named stops being adjustable to vary-the extent of movement of the several actuators limited bythe operation of said key stops.
8. In an adding machine, in combination, an adding wheel, an actuator therefor, a control bar for limiting the movement of said actuator, a series ot' stops on said control bar, and a series ot keys coperating with said stops to'limit the movement of said control bar, said stops being adjustable on said control bar to vary the extent of movement thereof limited by the. operation otl said keys..
9. In an adding'v machine, in combination,
an adding wheel, `an actuator therefor, a con-4 trol :bar for limiting the movement of said actuator, a series of stops on said lcontrol bar, a series of keysv 'coperating with said stops, the several stops'being adjustable varying distances-1 ---corresponding in distance and direction to the difference between the values of the several keys and the complemental values of said keys, and means for controlling such adjustment of said stops.
l0. In an adding machine, in combination, an adding wheel, an actuator therefor, a control bar for limiting the movement of said actuator, a series of pivoted dogs on said control bar, and a series of keys coperating with said-dogs to limit the movement of the said control bar, said dogs being adjustable on their pivots to vary the extent of movement of said control bar limited by said keys.
11. ln an adding machine, in combination, an adding Wheel, an actuator therefor, a control bar for limiting the movement of said actuator, a series of stops on said control bar, a series of keys cooperating with said stops, said stops being movably mounted on said control bar, and means for simultaneously shifting the positions of all of said stops on said control bar, said stops when in one position limiting the movements of the actuator to correspond to the value of a key operated and in another position limiting said movement to correspond to the complemental value of the key operated.
12. ln an adding machine, in combination, an adding Wheel, an actuator therefor, a control bar for limiting the movement of said actuator, a series of movable stops on said control bar, a series of keys cooperating with Isaid stops to limit the movement of said control bar, and a shift barmovably mounted on said control bar and cooperating with said stops for varying the position of the latter on said control bar.
13. ln an adding machine, in combination, an adding Wheel, an actuator therefor, a control bar for limiting the movement of said actuator, a series of pivoted' dogs on said control bar, said dogs. having studs, a series of keys cooperating With said dogs to limit the movement of said control bar, and a shift bar slidably mounted on said control bar and having means cooperating with said studs for adjusting said dogs on their pivots.
14. ln an adding machine, in combination, a plurality of series of keys, an adding wheel for each series of keys, an actuator for each adding Wheel, a control `bar for limiting the movement of each actuator, a series of stops on each of said control bars and cooperating with the keys of the corre-y sponding series, said stops being movable on said control bars to vary the extent of movement of the actuators limited by the operation of said keys, and means for shifting the positions of all of the stops on all of said control bars.
'15. In an adding` machine, in combination, a plurality of series of keys, an adding wheel for each series of keys, an actuator for each adding Wheel, a control bar for limiting the movement of each actuator, a series of movable stops on each of said control bars and cooperating with the keys of the corresponding series to limit the movement of said control bar, shift bars carried by said control bars and cooperating with said stopsI to shift the positions thereof on said control bars, and means for operating all of said shift bars.
16. In an adding machine, in combination, a plurality of series of keys, an adding Wheel for each series of keys, an actuator for each adding Wheel, a control bar for limiting the movement of each actuator, a series of stops on each of said control bars and cooperating With the keys of the corresponding series, said stops being movable on said control bars to vary the extent of movement of the actuators limited by the operation of said keys, devices carried by the several control bars for moving the stops thereon, a member for engaging and operating all of said devices, and manual means for operating said member.
17. In an adding machine, in combination, an adding Wheel, an actuator therefor, a control bar for limiting the movement of said actuator, a series of stops on said control bar, a series of keys cooperating With said stops to limit the movement of said control-bar, said stops being adjustable on said control bar to vary the extent of movement thereof limited byV the operation of said keys, means for adjusting said stops, means for locking said adjusting means, and manually operated means for operating said adjusting means and rendering operative said locking means, or for unlocking said locking means and releasing said adjusting means.
18. In an adding machine, in combination, an adding wheel, an actuator therefor, a control bar for limiting the movement of said actuator, a series of movable stops on said control bar, a series of keys cooperating with said stops to limit the movement of said control bar, a shift bar movably mounted on said control bar and cooperating With said stops for varying the position of the latter on said control bar, a lever pivoted to said control bar for operating said shift bar, a pawl pivoted'to said control bar for locking said lever, said pavvl having a cam portion, and a member for engaging and operating said lever, said member cooperating with said cam portion to cause said paWl to release said lever When said member is moved in one direction.
19. In an adding machine, in combination, printing mechanism, adding Wheels,factuators for said adding Wheels, keys for controlling said actuators, means including a set of stops intermediate the actuators and keys and corresponding in number to said keys for limiting the movements of the several actuators, means for adjusting the positions of said stops relative to the actuators and keys, said stops when in one position limiting the movements of the actuators to correspond to the true values of the keys operated, and in another position limiting said movements to correspond to the completo print the true values of the keys operated irrespective of the adjustment of said stops.v
20. In an adding machine, in combination, a series of keys, an adding wheel, an actuator for said adding wheel, a type carrier, a control bar, stop means for limitin'g the movement of said type carrier and comprising two cooperating parts one of which is carried by said control bar and the other of which is carried by said typeA carrier, and means including a series of stops intermediate said control bar and keys for limiting the movement of said actuator, said stops being adjustable relative to said control bar and keys.
2l. In an adding machine, in combination, a series of keys, an adding wheel, an actuator for said adding wheel, a control bar,
lmeans including a series of stops intermediate said control bar and keys for limiting themovement of said actuator, ,means for adjusting the positions of said stops relative to said control bar and keys, said stops when in one position limiting the movement of the actuator to correspond to the true value of the key operated, and in another position limiting said movement to correspond to the complemental value of the key operated, a type carrier, and stop means for limiting the movement of said type carrier to correspond to the true value of the key operated irrespective of the adjustment of said stops, said stop means comprising two cooperating parts one of which is carried by said control bar and the other of which is` carried by said type carrier.
22. In an adding machine, in combination,
a series of keys, an adding wheel, an actu-v ator for said adding wheel, a control bar,
means including a series of stops intermediate said control bar and keys for limiting the movement of said actuator, said stops being adjustable relative to said control bar and keys, a type carrier, means including two sets of stops intermediate said control bar and type carrier for limiting the movement of said type carrier, and manually operable shifting means for causing either set of said last-named stops to coperate with said type carrier and for adjusting said first-named stops.
23. In an adding'machine, in combination, a series of keys, an adding wheel, an actuator for said adding wheel, a control bar, means including a series of stops intermediate said control bar and keys for limiting the movement of said actuator, said stops being' shiftable relative to said controlbar and keys i-ntoeither of two positions, said stops when in one position limiting the movement of the actuator to correspond to the true value of a key operated, and in the other position limiting said movement to correspond to the complemental value of the key operated, a type carrier, means including two sets of st ops, one of which is complementa] to the other, intermediate said control bar and type carrier for limiting the movement of said type carrier, and m-anually operable means for causing either set of said last named stops to cooperate with said type carrier and for simultaneously shifting said. first named stops.
