MICHAEL J. DUFFY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROV-EMENT IN PRINTING HAT-TIPS.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 131,858, dated October l., 1872.
4the same, reference Vbeing had tothe accompanying drawingforming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a plan of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The-object of this invention is -to produce on tips for hats and caps, which tips are usually made of satin, silk, or other textile material, designs in more than one color, said designs. being printed directly on thev body of the tip. The difliculty which I had to overcome in executing this Work is due to the exible nature of the satin `or other textile material composing the body of the' tip, the edge of such satin being so soft that it does not enable the operator to adjust the tip under the press in theproper position to bring the various colors composing the design to be printed to register. My invention consists in first attaching the tip which is to be ornamented to a supporting-sheet of paper, card-board, or
other suitable material, land then exposing it to the action ofthe dies `in such a manner that, by bringing the edge or edges of said supportingsheet to bear against a suitable gage,"` the tip to be printed can be readily adjusted in the' requisite position to bring the `various colors'to register during the success iveoperations of printing.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a ,tip for ahat or cap, which is ornamented by a design, B, printed directly on the body of the tip in several colors. Said body consists of satin, silk, or other textile material, the edges of which are soft and iiexible, so that lthe same form no guide whereby the tip could be adjusted under the press in the proper position to bring the various colors to register. Before I commence the operation of printing,
thereforel secure the body of the tip on a ,l
supporting-sheet, C, of stift' paper or cardboard, the edges of which are stiff, so that the same can be brought to bear against a suita ble gage, and thereby I am enabled to Vadjust thetip under the press during the successive operations of printing in the proper position to cause the various colors to register with accuracy and to produce a perfect design. By following this process I am enabled to print directly on a tip of satin or other textileina terial designs in two or more colors with` the saine facility with which such designs are coinmonly printed on paper or other material presenting stiff edges.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The within-described process of producing designs in various colors directly on the body of a hat or cap tip made of satin or other textile fabricby rst securing said tip on a supporting-sheet of stift' paper or other suitable material, and then exposing the same to the subsequent operations of printing, the edges of the supporting sheet serving as guides whereby the various colors are brought to register, substantially as described.
This specication signed by me this 12th day oi' February, 1872.`
